- Arizona State's Leon Marchand won his third straight 200 breaststroke title and broke his own previous record with a 1:46.35 at the 2024 NCAA men's swimming and diving championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis on March 30, 2024.

Not just greatest collegiate swimmer, but greatest male LC swimmer. He's elite world class in the IMs, breaststroke events, butterfly events, and freestyle events. The only thing he doesn't exactly wow in is the backstroke.
I wish he would drop all his other disciplines and concentrate on the 200m Breast only. At the Paris Olympics the 200m Breast featuring Haiyang, Stubblety-Cook and Marchand would be the greatest swimming race of all time.

Pretty soon the race will be all underwater with just on one stroke above water. I think records like this should be the new hired record
I believe 15 meters is the maximum allowed under water in all events except freestyle.

Trying to compare his dominance to Ledecky, Walsh, or Douglass is a whole other can of worms
I don’t know if you can ever call someone like Gretchen Walsh a GOAT, simply because her repertoire is so narrow.
And even Ledecky, when compared to Marchand, has downright unimpressive versatility.
With Leon, it’s not a matter of what he can and cannot win, it’s a matter of whether he will participate. Winning appears a foregone conclusion.

@@realistic_delinquent I mean is versatility the metric of goat status? Even if it is, Walsh has the same amount of individual NCAA records, and as a sprinter she has more relay impact
If dominance is the metric, Ledecky's margins of victory are more extreme than Marchand, and winning was certainly a foregone conclusion
Marchand is crazy, but who the GOAT is depends on your metric in this case

cant help but notice rowdy was just wrong once again. at the halfway point he was saying marchand was 7 tenths under record pace, while in reality he was 1 tenth slower. rowdy needs to retire and we need better commentators if we want swimming to grow
