Higashiyama Zoo on Sunday, October 08, 2023.
The gorilla house was very tense from the morning.
I could not find Shabani's son Kiyomasa there, and Shabani was very irritated.
I immediately realized that there was trouble between Shabani and Kiyomasa, because the same thing had happened in February of this year, and it was similar to what had happened then.
This time, too, I was convinced when I saw Kiyomasa coming out of the basement and then returning to the basement again when he found Shabani.
I don't know what happened between them, but Kiyomasa kept avoiding Shabani the whole time.
After a while, Kiyomasa was able to be in the same room with Shabani, but his anger at Shabani did not seem to subside.
He must have been under a lot of stress, because he had some wounds on his finger.
Later, Kiyomasa provoked Shabani several times, but Shabani responded calmly.
However, because Kiyomasa put his hands on Shabani, Shabani intimidated Kiyomasa.
Female gorillas Nene, Ai, and Annie saw this and tried to stop Shabani.
In my opinion, however, this was not Shabani's fault.
Shabani was frustrated the whole day, but I think he handled Kiyomasa calmly.
The female gorillas, Nene and Ai, were also aggressive toward Shabani last time, but this time they worked together with Shabani.
And Annie, Shabani's daughter, was so anxious and stressed last time that she lost her energy to the point that her stomach was flat,
This time, however, she was relaxed enough to smile at me from time to time.
However, she is eating much less than usual, so I hope she will eat slowly and without straining.
Also, October 20 is Shabani's birthday.
If possible, I hope that Shabani and Kiyomasa will be back together by his birthday, and that the Shabani troop will be back to its usual happy self.
And what will happen to Kiyomasa's future?
Personally,
1. build a new facility for bachelor (single male gorillas) groups and spend time there with Gentaro (and Kintaro and Riki)
2. Form a group of Kiyomasa with female gorillas at the new facility.
I think one of the following is preferable, but both of them may be difficult and impractical to realize immediately.
If they go by the typical Japanese breeding method, they would keep Shabani and Kiyomasa separately in the same facility, but I personally do not think this is a very desirable method.
But for now, rather than looking ahead, I sincerely hope that they will quickly return to the Shabani family they were when they were close.
Because until a week ago, Shabani and Kiyomasa were playing wrestling outside in a relaxed and friendly manner with a burlap sack in tow.

I noticed a few things. Kiyomasa in hiding, and Shabani’s obvious concern; the fact that the troop didn’t seem annoyed with Shabani (so they did not think it was the big guy’s fault), Annie’s concern for her father, rather than Kiyomasa. Something happened in the basement, and I think Kiyomasa’s injured hand is a part of it. Kiyomasa was foolish to challenge his dad, and despite Shabani’s immediate reaction, he showed restraint in not pursuing and beating up his son. I think Shabani did a good job of establishing order within his family.
Thanks to Something About Gorillas for bringing us this patiently compiled and important narrative on the family dynamics.
I was about to write the same thing as you!!! It could have been that Shabani saw Ai or Annie bothering her in the basement, I guess Kiyo went too far with one of them, they are two females and Kiyo has wanted to mate for a long time. Shabani is losing patience with that topic... I think that's what bothers Shabani the most.
@2btpatch mic drop 🎤 because you nailed it! Something went on in that basement!!! And those two (AI & Nene) are co-signing the foolishness given Kiyo a false sense of power. Shabani will hurt Kiyo and Kiyo knows this, hence, why he runs and hide from Shabani. I’m glad Shabani held back but I’m sure at some point Shabani will get tired and unleash on Kiyo. Kiyo acts like a spoiled brat. Poor Annie, i’m sure she scared. I hate to say it but It’s time for Kiyo to go.
Once again we are going to have to speculate what happened prior, Kiyo knew the females would go after Shabani so he tried to provoke him. He needs a good kick up the ass.

It’s about time Shabani put Kiyomasa in his place. Shabani is very patient and kind but Kiyomasa has been acting like he is the silverback. This was bound to happen. Love and peace ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can the gorrillas hear all that commotion from the people. That would be distressing everyday for the gorillas, not to mention they dont look like they have a lot of space.

The tension is immense! I don't think Kiyo would be so brave if he didnt have the ladies to shield him. Shabani is so restrained and tense but wow when he unleashed! The speed and ferocity. Kiyo is lucky his Dad loves him too much to hurt him....yet. Hopefully they get back on good terms soon. ❤
Shabani just did the right thing as a silverback.
Let's be honest. Who has not had to fight against a teenage child who breaks the tranquility in the home?
This is law of life. Shabani is a tremendously tolerant and loving father, but he also has a job to do 😓.
But our teenage child doesn't mate with his mom and sister. 😂😂 That's will cause the wrath of father like Shabani.

Had to do it with 2 out of 4, and my oldest had to with my grandson. Always hated those moments.
Most Sons are likely to test their Fathers ( with physicality at some point ). Mine did. It has to be met with a Strong and fierce response, but CONTROLLED.
It teaches young men, LOTS of lessons.
Once again I have more questions than answers.
Only when Kiyo had the girls on his side did he feel safe enough to taunt his dad.
Nene as usual felt she had to admonish Shabani for touching her precious boy.
Good girl Annie stay with the father that kept you safe from the attacks you endured as a young girl.
It must have been going on for awhile because I've never seen so much 💩 inside..Were all left to speculate again. I love you Shabani, you Rock.😉😜

More than anything about a lesson in comeuppance, Kiyomasa learned how the alpha male deals with usurpers. Some day soon, he'll be the alpha male in his own troop and this episode will be seared into his memory. Every family has the teen vs. the parent blow up. It's part of severing the apron strings. Next to missing them when they're out of the nest, this is the most painful time in a family that's growing up.
😮 Good heavens...lots of tension here, right? Oh dear, Bani is irritated like 😠 at Kiyo again. They should have put Gentaro, Lope and Kiyomasa together as a bachelor group. Then later on pair them with wives.
Gorillas are beautiful animals.
And I think they're fantastic to look at.
But I have to say that I think the animal enclosure is small and boring

The flourescent lights, institutional paint scheme and wide open windows must do some pretty serious mental damage on such intelligent creatures 😞.
Not to mention the feces everywhere. The smell hall to be horrendous. Why not let them be in an outside natural environment. This place looks exactly like a prison

unfortunately this seems to be a ticking time bomb situation . at some point Shabani WILL put kiyo in his place and that will probably result in serious injury or worse. they really really NEED to move Kiyo.
Oh geez now we'll have to see Kiyo sulking for a few days. Shabani has spoiled him rotten!

That’s a very patient Silverback. He should have gone up that platform and clobbered the Blackback but he didn’t. When it’s their own they have to fight they seem to be more restrained which, to me, indicates that there is a bond between the two. Very interesting to watch them work out family issues. The females chasing behind the Silverback were like the referees .
There really needs to be a bachelor group for all the adolescent male gorillas in the region. Maybe they are working on something?
It’s sad to watch but Shabani is doing what he supposed to do. Son it not, he loves his children but he will not be intimidated by his young son. He has to teach him the ways. Kiyo will learn to understand the hierarchy. Kiyo definitely needs to be put in a bachelor group sooner than later. He will be a wonderful father and silverback he learned from the best. This by no means is Shabani fault.
Annie tries not to pick sides but you can see she stays close to her dad in a supportive way. From what i have observed gorilla's seem to all side with the weaker party to try and balance things out but Kiyo is always annoying Ai and so Ai is always sitting close to Shabani to get some peace but she immediately always picks Kiyo's side whenever there is an altercation with Shabani which i find strange. Shabani really deserves a loving partner.
Same thing with momo and gentaro. These zoo's have left them there too long. Both of these young males should have been separated from their family group before now.
@@bigboytoyz541Talk is cheap. Finding a location und funding the construction of an adequate (!) habitat is not. Even if that were given, there's no assurance that a bachelor group would function well (see HJ/Hasani/Jabari (Los Angeles)).
You can tell Shabani loves him, he heat checking on him. He doesn’t like having to discipline him, but he will if need be.
Why doesn't Japan start a young male gorilla group so there won't be this territorial profiling going on with fathers and sons ?
Shabani is a little permissive with his son and his son disrespects him possibly because he has the support of the females but if Gentaro did this with Momotaro the punishment is severe. Very nice video and informative too, thank you. I Love gorillas ❤❤❤❤
Sabani is a very patient and understanding father.
I don’t like to see Shabani and Kiyomasa fighting (but I know it’s all part of becoming a silverback) And I understand that Nene and Ai takes up for Kiyomasa BUT I’m very happy to see Annie standing up for her dad!! I know the zoo itself has limited space for all the animals,, even when they get the space for the bachelor group there has to be that one leader silverback the top dog number one big guy. I know and understand all that but until one becomes the leader there will be a lot of fighting 😢😢😢and that’s going to be horrible to watch.. IDK 🤷♀️ just thinking out loud again.

This is the second time it's happened, that I've seen. The zoos have a Binder with a list and pictures of male gorillas that need a family, mostly blackbacks. Cause this will keep happening and get worse, alot of stress for the gorillas
I been praising the Shabani Troop in other groups for their calm and happy environment. Maybe Kiyomasa is about to enter the Gentaro and Lope stage of adolescence. The rise of Kiyomasa 🦍🦍🦍🦍🦍
Looks like there had already been some sort of altercation if Kiyomasa hurt himself. But at the heart of it all, it's the girls who are the bravest and who wade in and try to prevent anything happening even though it's clear they are very wary of Shabani. I guess Kiyo is starting to mature and so there's not going to be room for the two of them for much longer. In the wild Kiyo would start his own family and troop.
Shabani loves Kiyo and really didn't want to hurt him.

最近は、京都のモモ一家でも同じようなことがありますが、モモパパはゲンタロウに厳しい父親だと思うし、そのくらいがいい。
アメリカ🇺🇸に住んでた時に見たのは、ご存知かと思いますが、🇺🇸動物園は独身のオスゴリラだけの群れのグループを作って一緒に居て、日本でも動物園が協力し合ってそのような場所を作って若いオス、ゲンタロウやキヨマサ、後にはリキを一緒にすれば良いと考えますけど、日本の動物園はなり行き主義の放置している感しか無いです。
個人の感想ですが、シャバーニが可哀想に感じます😢

So strange they have such a close relationship but he is of age but Kiyos issue is he’s been spoiled an he hides behind the females who have always come to his defense. What ever occurred his hiding in the basement is telling he’s still afraid of daddy an is still immature unlike Gentaro who sadly can’t escape his father

Love how the male starts it and the women protect him and finish it,the thing is though when Shabani really loses his temper,Kiyo is going to be very sorry.
Dads a bit grumpy today but it is to be expected,it's all in the teaching,but Shabani is very lenient with them,they are a good group,rarely have any blow ups,but I would expect more of it to come.
The problem is that the root of all this (altercation in the basement) was not caught on video. So one does ot know, if Shabani scolded/attacked Kiomasa without cause or acted in reaction to some kind of provocation. Obviously the reaction of troop membes differs: they will scare the silverback off, if his behaviour is willfully aggressive (frustrated Djeeco atacking Riki/Momoko), or stay quiet if it's a (measured) response to a provocation (Momotaro putting Gentaro in his place (2 times caught on video, Genki/Kintaro only slightly reacting the second time). Here Kiyomasa took a glance to the left ("You're with me?" (?)) before confronting Shabani and the troop acted accordingly.

First Shabani would never attacked Kiyo without provocation as yourself criticized him for lack of action and kisses Momotoro because he always always reprimanded Gentaro, so you always come here in order to criticizing Shabani and know that he corrected Kiyo starting on the basement you post that maybe maybe Shabani attacked Kiyo out of the blue because Shabani is sooooo a bad leader. I don’t understand why they have to build concrete & bars. At least have a more natural habitat for them. It just blows my mind that at least one, just one, of these apes can’t be released back into the wild somehow, if not the whole group at once. I think they can survive way more than we believe.
Their natural environment in the wild is shrinking, and they are being hunted by poachers (illegal hunting) and also not illegal hunting. Its actually a huge problem all over africa.
It's not a matter on whether they can survive on their own in the wild..There wild habitat is no longer safe for these animals. They would not thrive for long.
Totally agree. Nothing natural looking about the enclosure. Shrubs, hay or similar & trees would add at least some type of normality for them. 🌳🌴🌳🌴. 😢😢😢

Shabani barely touched him and he will sulk. It's his mother's fault for treating him like a baby.
Momotaro literally attacks Gentaro and you don't see him sulking like that.
A few year ago kiyomasa seemed more mature but Gentaro has grown up so much more lately
Just as people have different personalities and characters, so do gorillas. You can't really compare one to another.
Kiyomasa is a spoilt boy, one day he is gonna push it to far & he will get what he deserves.✌️

Гентаро - гений в среде горилл. Он изначально умнее их всех вместе взятых. Только Энни может с ним сравниться по умственным способностям. Наверное, полученное воспитание у людей сыграло свою роль. С ними много играли и развивали. Жаль, что их не хотят поженить. А Кийо очень избалован матерью, она его до 6 лет кормила грудью, что неслыханно и сдувала с него пылинки. Вот и результат ее воспитания. Шабани забыл, что он главный в стае и никто не имеет право голоса без его согласия. Его неправильное поведение привело к дисбалансу в отношениях в их семье.
@@Gretta1759 I agree, I saw some videos, when Kiyo was 4 or 5 he clung to his mom & even when she was chasing Shabani he would be on her front, that is the reason why the old woman's arms are bent when she walks.. Oh poor old Nene with her arthritis, but when it comes to protecting her son she is the first one to leg it.😅 I've never seen her protect Ai but Ai always has her back. This is another video that will divide people's opinion.
Annie looks at her father with such affection , she knows who protected her all these times, therefore she’s loyal to him . Kiyo needs to learn his lessons and Nenê and Ai needs to not being defending him all the times!
I believe that jus as the sliverback makes sure an argument ends quickly between their girls, the girls make sure the son doesn't get to badly hurt.❤
That was so intense and it had to boil over but I love how all the ladies surrounded Kiyo and as soon as it broke out, they defended him.
Kiyomasa took advantage of that, that's why he poked Shabani he knew they would go after him.

That silver back would beat or kill that younger gorilla . . But the silver back dad doesn't want to hurt or kill his son . . But he could if it came to doing .
This is normal at most of our Wal-Mart locations in Texas. Some Silverbacks get arrested and some get away from having slippery skin.

Bby it was the females sitting there keeping the peace.. eating their fruit., legs & arms crossed- just tryna stay out the way. The respect they have for the silver back- & still protected son when he agitated the alpha.. thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
Kiyo is fortunate to have places to hide. Gentaro does not. He’s learned to take the punches and not sulk before and after. He’s also not as fortunate to have Shabani as a father. Grow up Kiyo! Whatever you did take the punishment like Gentaro does!
I think it better to have dad like momotaro who is strict and always on rules,Shabani good too but he is too soft and more play than rules,the real unfortunate is kiyo have Nene as mother who spoilt him rotten .

Nene birth Kiyo at an older age. That's another reason she spoiled him.
Genki always defends Gentaro. Big Momo wasn't allowed to discipline Gentaro if he did there was hell to pay from Genki.
Gentaro does his fair share of testing the waters with his Dad too. You can tell by the goofy look on Gentaro's face and the way he makes his lips and that artched back.....
That's usually his posture when he is attacking Genki, but it's the same when he is messing with his Dad.........
These females.witnessed Kiyomasa repeatedly hitting Shabani first. Towards the end, these females join Kiyomasa & gang up on Shabani. Kiyomasa feels empowered because the entire troop is on his side. Momotaro knocked his son Gentaro's teeth out. But Shabani's too kind to whip Kiyomasa's butt. Move Kiyomasa to the Momotaro troop, so he can learn about respect.
Amen, Annie will always stand by the dad that protected as a small child.

Videos show nasty Nene having sex with Kiyomasa since he was a toddler. Several months ago, Shabani attempted to discipline Kiyomasa for mating his sister Annie. Recently, Kiyomasa was attempting to screw his sister Ai, but he stopped when Shabani gave him a look that could kill. Obviously, Shabani & Nene don't like each other. Shabani sees Nene as a troublemaker & Nene sees Shabani as a weak Silverback. Nene & Ai are supposed to be Shabani's wives. But Shabani can't stand Nene & Ai is not interested in sex with Shabani.
This zoo needs to remove Kiyomasa & his troop.(Nene & Ai) to avoid a fatality.

A perfect example of why these special, captive beings, need sign lanuage, my friends.😊
They already display sign language: their hands, their posture, glances and eye contact, their attitude: playfulness or lack of it. There are so many ways gorillas sign their intent.
Gorillas communicate just fine without sign language.
What they need is a proper breeding program that actually plans the future for these animals ahead of time. Waiting until they are grown and then trying to figure out what to do is a piss poor way of doing things. The future of these beautiful animals should have been mapped out when they were still little. Now Japan has 5 gorillas that need to be moved away from their family group, and they don't have anywhere to put them.
Yes. Gorillas first. Instead of our own intent. Simple 20 vocabulary word or signs, would help stimulate them, and communicate better than they are, to each other. They can tell the keepers "where it hurts", whos fault it is, favorite fruit ice, mother, father, love, and "move away from the child".
P.S.-my cat knows 4 signs, and 10 words.

Funny how Kiyo runs when he sees Shabs, but the moment he has his army behind him with General Nene, he’ll start with provoking Shabs. Then let the rest run him. I wonder if something happened to Nene, would Ai continue to guard Kiyo or would he FINALLY have to stand on his own??

Sometimes, I’ll be honest , this is hard to watch these magnificent animals in such an unnatural environment. It has to take its toll on them. Not dissing the caretakers at all.

Shabani deveria dar uma lição nos 3, Nene, Kiyomasa e Ai. Fiquei muito feliz que Annie ficou preocupada com o papai Shabani 😊. O maior problema do Shabani e sensibilidade eu entendo isso, mais queria que ele fosse mais rigoroso em assunto que um deles era pra acabar já faz tempo.
Sim , queria muito que ele desse um sacode nos 3 bem dados , mas Shabani e muito sensivel ele só levou um tapa na cabeça nem tomou iniciativa .
Vi um video dele dando um em nenê por causa de annie quando era filhote e foi louco ele levantou ela na mordida 😮

I saw these two in Walmart yesterday.
I noticed Shabani’s fur all over the floor that combined with all the 💩 everywhere leads me to believe the fight happened prior to opening right there by the door.
Lucky for Kyomasa this is not the jungle he would have to leave the troop, if they were out in the jungle.
These intelligent creatures belong in the wild, not a life of confinement for our viewing pleasure. Nature knows how to take care of itself
