As a Finn i'm glad Finland won that game but at the same time i'm feel bad for Slovakia:( sad that they didn't win their first olympic medal and it's much sadder because Demitra died. He was amazing player! Rest In Peace Pavol Demitra 1974-2011❤❤

The most memorable ice-hockey match for me ever... That was a big pity for us (Slovaks) that we didn´t manage to reach bronze medal... The crew around great Slovak players like Marián Hossa, Demitra, Gáborík, Chára, Handzuš, Zedník, Šatan, Višňovský, Pálffy, Stümpel, Halák, and so on, would have deserve it... :-( Thank you, boys, for this eventful tournament!!! And for Palo: WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOUUUU!!!

+Štefan Hudáček Finland had Kiprusoff, Filppula, Selänne, Saku and Mikko Koivu, Bäckström, Peltonen, Lehtinen, Salo, Timonen, Olli Jokinen and Pitkänen. I think that's the more deserving roster.

Before this tournament, there were huge expectations for Finland's success after reaching twice in a row 2nd place in tournaments with all best (NHL) players participating. The second place in the 2004 World Cup was followed by silver from the 2006 Olympics (this was the one that should not have got away). The atmosphere was that of course, they are going to play in the gold medal game once again. I remember that Finland was not playing especially well in this tournament but still managed to win games. Jussi Jokinen was 30+ goal scorer in NHL this season and was not elected to the team that caused a major media buzz before the tournament. Lehtinen - Koivu - Selänne line had passed their prime and was not able to dominate anymore. Head coach Jukka Jalonen was under big media critic and the atmosphere during the tournament that passed to home via tv and interviews was not that great either. The bubble of too big expectations burst in the semifinal game when on Friday evening while the whole country was watching the game, the USA won the first period 6-0. That was really ugly, but maybe it was supposed to happen.
After the semifinal, this kind of comeback in the bronze medal game was some sort of miracle. Olli Jokinen had always been the second line guy after Lehtinen - Koivu - Selänne. Maybe he was a little bit looked over and even ridiculed in Finland for some dumb things or rumors of things that he had done when he was younger. Even being the leading Finnish scorer in NHL for some seasons. In the after game interview, Jokinen immediately told that he was going to retire from representing Finland in international tournaments even being relatively young back then.
Even with the bronze medal, this tournament did not leave a satisfying feel. Slovaks had amazing and really likable players in that team and their loss was a pity. It's good that Finland won that game, but afterward, I feel bad for Slovaks. They also had their golden generation of ice hockey talent here. Finland had already had success with those players starting from 1998 Nagano bronze and win of the Slovaks had not had any Olympic medals from ice hockey.
Against the odds, Selänne continued playing still in the 2014 Olympics and Jokinen turned his decision around and participated in 2014 Olympics and even in the 2014 IIHF WC being the captain for the team Finland. 2014 IIHF WC ended up with silver medals after a really questionable referee action in the gold medal game held in Belarus against Russia. If you don't remember you may google the case.
2014 Sochi Olympics were so much better to experience compared to the 2010 games. Beating Russia in their home soil under the eyes of Putin in the quarterfinal game was so satisfying. The bronze medal game offered a tiny bit of revenge from 2010 after Finland beat the USA 5-0 in that game. Saku Koivu could not play in this tournament and in a way I see that Mikael Granlund took that torch from Saku. Granlund and Selänne were Finlands' top scorers and Selänne was elected to be MVP of the tournament at the age of 42 or something. Who would have guessed?
Selänne, even while having an amazing career, was not able to achieve any gold medal representing the team Finland. Jokinen had only WCJ gold from 1998. Lehtinen and Koivu won IIHF WC gold in 1995.

I'm not sure they were demoralized as they tore Finland to shreds in the second period. I think that Slovakia let the pressure of trying to win a medal get to them in the third period and they panicked, allowing Finland to get back in the game. This was an absolute heart-breaker; I was really hoping to see Slovakia get Bronze and I don't have a drop of Slovakian blood in me.
