    I still remember when i read up 3.5's Tarrasque :
    "the tarrasque can only be killed by dealing nonlethal damage as much as its Max HP, meaning you have to deal 868 damage (after reducing it to 0 HP) and a Wish spell to keep it dead, or it will keep regenerating 40 HP"
    BY THE GODS, WHAT THE FUCK.

      Nah as a DM when you use the Tarrasque you usually give them a weakness they can exploit and a method to use because fighting it face to face is stupidly difficult... It was basically the DM making them feel empowered

    • @Mike-zx7lq
      @Mike-zx7lq 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yet soooo many TPKs are the result of a party not realizing they are not meant to win a fight though, because DMs always underestimate just how badly PCs want to fight everything (and how they tend to assume any potential for a fight put in front of them is winnable by design). DMs ALWAYS think SURELY the party will flee this impossible foe, but nope! Players don't think like that.

    Here’s my “killing a tarrasque” story. The tarrasque appeared in the middle of the desert and started terrorizing the local Barbarian camps. The bard asked if the two wizard to cast the greater invisibility spell and the fly spell. Then the bard looked at the DM and said the most infamous four words in our group “I cast true polymorph,” so the bard turned into an intellect devourer, that might I remind you, is currently invisible and flying, goes up to the tarrasque and saps his intelligence, killing it in one foul swoop.

    I had a pair of lvl 16s; a universal wizard and a shadow sorcerer. They knew it was coming so they decided to gather intel on the monster. low and behold they realized the monster wasnt amphibious.... so as a quest reward they had a small airship, they used that to fly over it and they took turns casting polymorph waiting for the spell to succeed. They also conscripted an entire army to fire arrows at it so they would be left alone. After a few rounds I roll 2 nat 1s and I burned the legendary resits so it worked. They turned the all mighty tarrasque into a cow... then, they sent it to the plain of water.
    gave them an epic boon for their creativity

    Dropping a building on The Tarrasque does nothing to it. It can't take nonmagical Bludgeoning, Piercing, or Slashing damage. The thing could theoretically plummet from orbit and take 0 damage.

    • @Karak971
      @Karak971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +159

      michael scalia false, WotC has clarified that falling damage is not a bludgeoning weapon. Though it is still bludgeoning damage the tarrasque specified nonmagical weapons, not sources.

    • @michaelscalia7080

      Guess that was just a personal ruling, then. Fair enough.

    • @Jpteryx
      @Jpteryx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      But that's such a weird ruling. Is the force of a giant's club hitting the Tarrasque a different force from the force of the ground hitting the Tarrasque?

    • @michaelscalia7080
      @michaelscalia7080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Exactly my standpoint. Which is why when something is immune to the standard damages, they're immune to all sources of them. Falling into the dirt? Bludgeoning that's nonmagical. Plummeting into a Tiger Pit filled with spikes? Nonmagical Piercing. Getting sliced by a pit filled with blades when you fall in? Nonmagical slashing. Tarrasque is immune. Or at least, given the spirit of the rules, should be. I mean, there's a reason why it can saq entire countrysides without even bleeding.

    • @Karak971
      @Karak971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Akav Akaku I agree, in my opinion it was ruled thusly so that PC lycanthropes, who would have the same immunity, couldn’t do absurd falling scenes and things of that nature. As for the sense of the ruling I would say it’s because your body is impacting something and causing your innards to suddenly stop compared to a giants club trying to attack your external body.

    I used to play a cleric which i raised from lv 1 to 20. We were up against a Tarrasque, and we were getting beaten up pretty bad. A prophecy said that we had to use a special dagger to get the beast back to its slumber.
    The fight goes on, and as we were about to use the dagger, the rogue dropped the dagger, and the Tarrasque stepped on it, breaking it forever.
    I was a Cleric of Chaos, and casted Miracle, saying these words: "Oh Nimb, father and friend, give me something, ANYTHING, to deliver this beast's end!" and as i cast it, a translucent two handed sword appeared on my hands, and i hit the Tarrasque with it and suddendly "POOF", the Tarrasque was no more. Litereally, he instantly vanished.
    My friends, worried that the spell might've done something weird, tried to find the Tarrasque. HE WAS STILL THERE, ON THAT SAME SPOT. What the sword did was banish the Tarrasque to the ASTRAL plane. Yes, the plane we use to travel when using Teleportation.
    Whenever someone, ANYONE, used spells that meddled with the astral plane, from then on, there was a slim, but very real chance that the Tarrasque would go and hunt the spellcaster.
    Pretty regular day on the job of a Chaotic cleric, i'd say.

    This seems easy to me, depending on environment, if we just take a huge open stretch of land, killing the Tarrasque becomes easy.
    He can only move 100 ft each turn, and has no ranged weapons, so all you need is basically Haste and the mobile feat.
    Now you have 40 base speed, haste makes it 80, use the extra action of haste to dash and you now have 160 movement and an enemy that is not allowed to hit you with attacks of opportunity.
    Add a longbow for when the thing starts trying to keep it's distance and you're set.
    Hell, why am I even trying so hard, just make an Aarakocra and fly in the air and start spamming arrows. As long as the bow is magical, eventually it will die.

    I had a Tarasque killing weapon.
    I had a Monty Hall style character named Dergeus. A chaotic neutral dwarf merchant who was crazy strong (hauled his cart by the ox yolk on his own shoulders) and crazy. Didn’t even know he was Vargadain’s jester. He had a weapon called the SOD, which stood for suppository of death. It was a foot long spike with a chain and handle coming out of one end. Pulling on the chain once the main spike was stuck up someone’s rear end (successful sneak attack from behind) would cause poisoned spikes to pop out the sides of the main spike. A successful strength check after this pull would cause automatic disembowelment out the target’s rear.
    At one point we had a SOD with acid poison spikes that was so large it could be used on a Tarasque. Naturally we called it “the Tarasque Hunter SOD”.

    The Tarrasque out of the MM is only immune to Fire, Poison; Bludgeoning, Piercing, And Slashing from Nonmagical Weapons in terms of damage immunity. That leaves Magical weapons, Bludgeoning, Piercing, And Slashing damage from anything that isn't a weapon, lightning, thunder, radiant, necrotic, force, cold, psychic, and yes, acid. So most types of damage work. Just watch out when using magical projectiles of any sort.

    A 13th level arcane trickster with the sharpshooter feat and no magic items can solo a tarrasque. Phantom steed to outrun it, then just spam shadow blade from 60ft out until it dies. With advantage from darkness, you're hitting about 50% of the time. With sneak attack, each hit does about 40 psychic damage, 1 in 5 hits will be crits dealing closer to 75 damage, giving average DPR of 24 meaning you need about 30 rounds give or take to finish the job. It's a weapon attack, not a spell attack, so the carapace doesn't trigger. With your 3 2nd level and 1 extra 3rd level spell slots (3d8 for a quarter of the time, boosting damage a wee bit) you've got 40 rounds of brain-stabby goodness which should be just about enough. In a pinch, you can dash with a bonus action, moving 200 ft to reposition if he gets a bit too cunning for an int 3 monster. And if it all goes wrong for any reason, you can just gallop away on your fake horsey to hide and rest up and try again the next night.

    My AD&D 2e party killed a Tarrasque in a one shot last just latest week.
    My character was an 11th level Mage/Thief.
    First round of combat, I successfully cast Slow on the Tarrasque. He now has half his normal attacks and movement.
    The reduced movement just barley prevented the Tarrasque from trampling our cleric.
    Now even more important that movement, in 2E AD&D, the slow spell also gives its target a -4 on all attacks AND FUTURE SAVING THROWS.
    Next round, I cast Hold Monster. If you cast Hold monster on a single target, it makes a save with a -3 penalty.
    So because the Tarrasque is slowed, that means it had to save against Hold Monster at a -7 (-4-3)
    The Tarrasque failed it save and was held. At that point, since that Tarrasque was the only enemy and was held, the DM allowed us to Coup de Grace the Tarrasque.

    My favorite way me and my party ever killed a Tarasque was my not actually fighting it ourselves... We'd defeated a wizard earlier in the campaign, and one of the things we looted from his tower was a manual on how to create golems. So we kept it but never really used it. That was, until the Tarasque emerged from beneath tbe earth and started wrecking everything. So, using the book, we created like 5 or so clay golems, then we completely covered them in raw meat. Sent then 5 of them out to confront the beast. Three were pretty much just crushed, but one managed to get swallowed in the first round. (We'd basically instructed them to not fight back if being grappled by Its bite attack.) Now we've got a creature in the belly of the Tarasque. Can't take acid damage. Has magical attacks. And wants this thing dead. The chances of it doing enough damage to trigger the con save is super low, and so, wgile it took forever, our never sleeping never eating clay boi brought down the monstrosity. Bare in mind we were like, level 9 at this point, shouldn't have been fighting a Tarasque. It was meant to be an adventure to gain the needed powerful artifacts and levels to take it on.
