Hi Adam Mishan, I really like your reacts on Weeknd's songs. You may know that Abel is born from Ethiopian family, so he grew up listening Ethiopian songs you may never herd of them. Ethiopian songs have unbelievable musical tons.... Abel uses them in his most musics that make his musics unique . Have you ever heard Ethiopian Orthodox religion hymn? Now I gave you the key that from now on you will discover the Weeknd more. Abel is rich in music because of his heritage. Some examples: in his Pray For Me music, at the the end of the music, there is a part sounds like Elelelele, Elelele, Elleeeeelle this sound usually used in Ethiopian orthodox religious ceremony to show a happy yes yes kind of that. He even incorporates Amaharic language in his songs. To me he is more like Picasso, both are doing Unique Art. He has so much to show to this world because he has rich culture. He never borrow or steal from other singers. I would say Abel is reclaiming his ancestral property . I can see why some of his way of singings are odd to you. You did good on this, that is why I react.
Its awesome that his rifs, runs and his melodies include tinges of traditional Ethiopian pentatonic scales...and the fact that he stated some renown Ethiopian artists as one of his inspirations.... #respect and #pride
