This video was done in Avi's apartment in his kitchen and bathroom. They only had $400, they used it wisely don't you think? So much out there of their work for you to see and hear. You'll love the journey!!!
Some of their greats with Avi that you should check out are - Wizard of Ahhs (with Todrick Hall), Say Something (Kirstie shines), Evolution of Michael Jackson, Radioactive (with Lindsay Sterling).
You are correct about the basic breakdown. The group calls Kevin the "beatboxer/percussionist" and Matt/Avi "the bass". Together those two are "the percussion section" and the Trio are "soloists". That said, you'll find that the lines are a lot more grey than black and white. All five can and do sing, all five can and will participate in various forms of percussion and vocal fill... and all five democratically decide on who is the best fit for any particular solo or lead. Both basses have taken lead on full songs, not just as part of the ensembles, and there are more than a dozen songs where Kevin has verses in the ensembles or sings as part of their no-percussion songs done in five part harmony. Every single member of the group is a total package and they take full advantage of the abundance of talent. Glad you're on the journey!
@@Docy93Reacts I often think of PTX as five soloists who are also backing artists. As previously mentioned, they decide who is the best voice for each verse (or phrase) and that is who sings it. Kevin is so powerful at beatboxing, that is his main focus, which means that he is not available for lead that often, but when he is he has a great tenor voice. Scott can cover bass when Avi or Matt are taking solo spots.
Not quite. It is the rythmn section. The name was specifically changed from beatboxer to award it to Avi as a vocal bass at the ICCA competitions. It has only been awarded twice starting in 2011 to the bass instead of the beatboxer. They changed the name to award it to Avi who did quite a bit of beatboxing while with his other Acappella groups and then Pentatonix.
Wait until you hear them live (even informally w/out microphones) & realize they really DO reproduce their sounds live! They're touring Europe and UK in 2022! Maybe you can catch them in concert! 🤗👍
Thanks for your reaction! This is from very early in their career not long after they won season 3 of the "Sing-off". As winners, they were promised a recording contract but were dropped right away and told acapella was a novelty that would not sell. They scraped together $400 between them and made this video in the kitchen and closet of Kevin and Avi's apartment and posted it on You Tube-- it won them the first of three Grammy awards and opened a lot of doors for them. I look foward to more reactions from you!
Excellent reaction! Loved watching you trying to take it all in (as we all do, no matter how often we watch it). Welcome to the Rabbit Hole - it's deep & twisty. I would recommend the mad, delightful "Come Along"; depressed, beautiful "Mad World"; iconic "Hallelujah"; powerful "Sound of Silence"; original & striking "Love Again"; from earlier in their career "Problem"; fun, fun "Making Christmas"; wildly different "My Favorite Things"; an updated take on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" . . . and SO many more, I can't fit in all my favorites! Oh! And part of their latest release, the exquisite rendition of "The Prayer". I would recommend you leave that last one until you get more familiar with each of them. The vocal & performance growth from their original song "Sing" to "The Prayer" is amazing! And considering how good they were in 2011, that's saying something. Well, thank you for reading this whole mad thing. From a Pentaholic, with love. "Imagine" - you must also listen & watch their version of "Imagine". Thanx, again. 😊

So glad you're back! Avi's bass is amazing. If you are into that you should try Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan " Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair". Absolutely wonderful. Avi's voice is like melted chocolate!
Great reaction! It is amazing how often the first word out of a reactioner's mouth after they watch/listen to a video by Pentatonix is just one syllable, such as "WOW!" or "WHAT???! As great as Pentatonix' music and videos are, they tend to just leave very little to be said! Thank you for reacting to "Daft Punk". The great thing about Pentatonix is that you won't run out of great music to react to for a LONG time!!
The 3 main singers started out as The Trio in high school. They added the bass and the beatboxer to form Pentatonix. Recommend their Love Again (original), Hallelujah, and Radioactive.

Just as a heads up if you plan on doing more reactions to them, their label SME is quite aggressive with copyright blocking, so you may need to use video filters and more pausing to give commentary (to break up the audio copyrights), but otherwise great reaction. Yes usually the 3 are the main singers, but there are plenty of songs where the bass singer (Avi or Matt) will take a verse and occasionally Kevin (the beatboxer/cello player/tenor) sings as well either with background vocals or a rare solo/verse moment
I enjoy watching the eyes of reviewers when it comes to this melody. They move so rapidly as 5hey try to follow all the activity on screen. Good review.
By the time they got to Television Rules the Nation you looked completely gobsmacked 😆 This song was recorded in a closet and the video was filmed in a kitchen. This info is directly from Scott’s (white hair in this vid) GRAMMY acceptance speech. Yes, this won them their first of three Grammys. The others were for Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They can, and do, reproduce this live. In fact, they pride themselves on being able to reproduce their recordings live. There are only five of them, but each one is so versatile and that is what makes them stand out from all other a cappella groups. Enjoy your PTX journey!
@@Docy93Reacts there are some great live concert or show appearance videos you can watch here on TH-cam. I do recommend watching the official videos first so you can get an idea of what they’re recreating. All of their “Evolution of…” videos are live one-takes. My personal favorite is Evolution of Michael Jackson. A couple of other really great live one-takes are their covers of No by Meghan Trainor and Gold by Kiiara. Listen to the originals first if you’re not familiar. It helps. A couple of earlier ones (shot on an iPad so the quality is sub-par) are fun even if they’re low-quality. I’m very fond of their version of Thrift Shop. Have fun with their catalog. You can’t go wrong.
I've been loving your reactions to PTX so i have a request that I'm praying you react to. It's for non other then PTX's amazing beatboxer Kevin "KO" Olusola. Its just him, in his home studio, making music with his looper and this Man is a Beast. In my view he is the most talented member of the group. I'm not taking away anything from Scott, Mitch, Kirsty, or Matt and Avi, but here's the low down on Kev. At age 5 he started to play a songs from the radio on a toy keyboard his dad bought for him on X-Mass, 3 days after he opened it ...by ear alone. His dad saw his gift and automatically put him in professional lessons for Piano but Kev also wanted more pro lessons as the years went on, and by the age of 10 he was being taught professionally on the Piano, Saxophone and Cello. The Cello was his main instrument but he is classically taught on all 3 instruments and has preformed in Carnegie Hall twice as a soloist, once for Sax and the other Cello and that's before he was 17. He is the first person to invent and master Cello boxing, mixing classical Cello and urban hip hop beatboxing together. He's also a writer and brilliant music producer. He has also gotten his degree in Pre-Med and Asian Studies from Princeton and speaks perfect Mandarin Chinese, all this before the age of 21. When he finally met Scott and the other members of PTX to audition for The Sing Off on NBC they had only been a group for one day. I suggest you react to Kevin's cover of "Down" by Marian Hill th-cam.com/video/IGjg193h4Ok/w-d-xo.html and my other fav is Kevin's remake of "Sign of the Times" by Harry Styles th-cam.com/video/hBFlhLEU7uU/w-d-xo.html You will blow your mind watching these. trust me and enjoy. I know I'll enjoy seeing you react to them. Thank You & Peace.
@@Docy93Reacts I really hope you do check him out. I'll keep an eye out. Trust me is well worth it. and you don't need to worry about copyright infringement as far as I know. Every reactor I've seen plays Kevin's video uncut because Kevin allows it and they have no ties to the studios.
So you are beginning to understand why there are so many Pentaholics. The output of the group...videos, singles, albums, tours...has been at a breakneck speed, resulting in the original bass, Avi Kaplan, leaving after 6 years and the new bass, Matt Sallee, joining in late 2017. This has been the only change in over ten years of PTX, although Kirstie and Mitch often change their looks. You can still follow Avi, who has his own site and some phenomenal music, well worth the visit. I hope you enjoy discovering more about these amazing people and their wonderful music.
We Pentaholics refer to this as falling down a rabbit hole. Every song blows me away. Their christmas songs are, I say, legendary. You will soon find out and I am looking forward to seeing more of your reactions. Thanks :)
They do awesome covers. They do great evaluation videos where they do tributes to their favorite artist and do mash ups of their songs. Michael Jackson is one of my favorite. They also have amazing originals. One of their older originals that is kind of like Daft Punk is Love Again. They cover all types of music. Stick around..you'll be amazed!😊
I have subscribed! Yea! Yes the Pentaholics will be so excited to have a new reactor watching and appreciating Pentatonix’s talent. I have tickets for their Christmas concert and am so excited 😆. If you want suggestions just ask and will leave you links. Thanks for the reaction!
I am a new subscriber to your channel . You are thoughtful and intelligent . Keep up the great reactions . I am a huge pentatonix fan . I especially enjoy the fact you do not speak much while watching the videos . Thank you for that . This song won them a Grammy and was recorded in their home and the filmed there as well . I kindly request you react to more pentatonix .
oh btw you mentioned the video production. 1st of all they were just starting out and they had no budget and they ended up making it themselves for $400 shooting it in the closet of Scotts flat in one day. Kevin couldn't handle wearing the blue contact lenses so they grabbed a pair of sunglasses from the gas station across the street. Avi and Kevin edited the video with Kevin's laptop on Mitch's kitchen table the next day. This home project won them there first Grammy Award and the rest is history. 💥💯💥
Awesome reaction, new subscriber here.. If you continue your journey, we Pentaholics will be happy to join, there's nothing better than watching a newbie reacting to them in awe.. Please more, maybe Hallelujah and Imagine?
Great reaction! Please keep reacting to them. Definitely blur the video or use some kind of filter along with occasional pauses to keep from getting blocked. It seems they go after the higher viewed videos of theirs more aggressively (like Bohemian Rhapsody). On their evolution videos and live videos usually pausing every 30 seconds or so to comment is enough to keep you safe. Enjoy!!
My bohemian rhapsody video got blocked video wise so I had to blur that. The way I tend to do it is I will render and upload a non blurred version and if it gets blocked re-edit with a blur and upload that :D
If you like this style, they have an original "Love Again" is fantastic. A slower original "Run to You" is just beautiful. Or you can change it up with Macklemore's "Can't hold us". These are my 3 faves.
Also, although Pentatonix has been together for 10 years, there has been only one change. Mitch and Kirstie change their style in every video and sometimes reviewers think they’re different people. Avi, the bass, left about 4 years ago, on good terms due to personal/family reasons. He was replaced by Matt, another amazing talent.
I enjoy your reactions. If I may make a suggestion: Pause the video when you want to talk then back it up 5 seconds when you start it again. This serves two purposes: 1) It will help prevent it from getting a copyright block. Their record company is very intense about this. 2) You won't miss any interesting bits.
Thank you for both the kind words and the suggestions :D I do pause reactions from time to time but often feel rewinding the video and such could frustrate viewers. Either way I will try to play around with things in future reactions :D After all we are still early in this journey so I am sure we will find the perfect way to do things
@@Docy93Reacts Most Pentaholics prefer pausing when you talk and rewinding. Some will say otherwise, but they're free to go watch the originals. The rest of us appreciate being able to focus on your comments and, especially, listen to your insights about things we may have not noticed before.

Not necessarily for you to react to, but this is them doing this live in a wee backstage room at a concert venue. It is a nice counterpoint to the official video. If you like this style, they have an original "Love Again" is fantastic. A slower original "Run to You" is just beautiful. Or you can change it up with Macklemore's "Can't hold us". These are my 3 faves.
I'll make sure I check your favourites out ;)
Also, although Pentatonix has been together for 10 years, there has been only one change. Mitch and Kirstie change their style in every video and sometimes reviewers think they’re different people.
Avi, the bass, left about 4 years ago, on good terms due to personal/family reasons. He was replaced by Matt, another amazing talent.
10 years is crazy. So glad to hear they are still together. I look forward to seeing the change in members :D
Feel free to pause as often as you like. Oh, and breathe!
There's a live backstage version of this. Hunt it up, you won't regret it.
I do love live performances 😍
Stellar
So much fun and a lot of talent
You are on your way to becoming a Pentaholic!!! Yea!!!!!!! Welcome!!!
It feels that way. So Impressed
Lol... yeah... it’s a lot to take in. Enjoy. 🤗
2nd reaction to PTX and so far I am in love. Can't wait to check out more
Hey friend, I think your beard got dusty when you dropped your jaw on the floor 😜. Anyway great reaction!
I love this comment 😂
I would highly recommend giving a listen to geoff castellucci and his cover of far over the misty mountains cold or any of voiceplays songs
I'll check it out :D
@@Docy93Reacts the cool thing about geoffs videos is that you dont have to worry about copyright all voiceplay members enjoy getting support from the reactions
@@quincymccourt8422 Got a lot of respect for that
You'll likely enjoy Scott's acceptance speech for the Grammy they won for this 'Daft Punk' cover.

I'll give it a view :D
Please watch “Beginners Guide to Pentatonix “
You will learn all about the group.👍👍👍
There are some spoilers (short snippets of their songs), but here is the link to "Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix" or PTX for short: th-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/w-d-xo.html
I do plan on checking the beginners guide out at somepoint :D I do however want to check out a few more reactions before going to the guide. Want to try and avoid potential spoilers
Thank you for the link
Not necessarily for you to react to, but this is them doing this live in a wee backstage room at a concert venue. It is a nice counterpoint to the official video.
There are usually various VIP ticket options at their gigs which can involve going to a sound check, a meet and greet/signing, and a private performance of a song. This is a video of one of those private performances with them doing Daft Punk with no mics.
