    Went to high school and graduated with Roy. He has been an old soul since then. Wynton Marsalis came to conduct a session at school, Roy played with him, and Wynton stood back and you could see Roy's level of talent even then. Very cool memories.

      I remember him coming through when we visited BTWHSPVA. I went to Houston HSPVA during the Doc era. He played Recordame with us on a jam. I had to follow him. Very fun time. Blew everybody away to play with him.

    A very exceptional warm, considerate person, who is sadly missed. I really feel it when good people who give so much pass away far too early. Forever in our thoughts, Mr Roy Hargrove. From the UK

    Many a night I've sat up late listening to Roy. He was magical, he was a phenom, he was everything rolled into one. Roy's music took you into a better place and time, and it became almost an addiction. His heart and soul was in his music. I never thought that jazz musicians received the recognition they deserved. They work hard for little money and when they pass on, it's a loss to the world. R.I.P. Roy .

    Very missed my dear friend✨🕊💕 very happy he speaks truth here in the interview. He was always a huge supporter of the kids playing, the most present musician at all the jam sessions Zinc Bar, Smalls jazz club, Fat Cat. It’s true. They; we all loved him so much for just that alone. “No one” did this. Just Roy🙏🏻 God Bless him, our earth angel 😇 #peace ✨🕊💕

I paid to see them and two hours later I was playing with them. It's true what he says about jam sessions. He is so generous, he is a really nice man. Thanks Roy, you are a great human being!

    3:45 totally true. I have pics of him on piano, and with him in fat cat in one of those nights I was jamming. I remember I found him almost every Wednesday in fat cat. Then we went to another club hanging out w/ Richard Bona. He was at that time very sick and looked fragile /weak. I think in one way he was saying goodbye, in another, he wanted some company and get the vibe from that atmosphere. Rest in peace brotha 🙏🏽🤘🏽🎺

    He may be young in this video, but he does look & sound tired. Look closely and he has that 2000-yard stare towards the end of each sentence that the overworked & road-weary get after a while in a thankless job. But that's what we do, man: We Neglect Them When They're Present, We Lament Them When They're Gone. God Bless. He has the mannerisms and voice inflection of a jazz veteran more than twice his age. His words and facial expression at 5:21 are very telling.

    Not only Roy Hargrove is a great musician in his interviews he keeps it real. What he is saying is the truth about the struggle. So if he chooses to marry his wife has to understand of what he is and know that he was born to play jazz. He is in full control of his trumpet. He love what he does. I've been in this crazy, backstabbing music business on and off for over 50 years. There is a serious price to pay becoming a superstar. I enjoy listening to great musicians. It's my natural high.

    I'm glad I saw this interview. Roy, looked tired in D'Angelo's Sao Paulo concert. It was a long show, for someone using all of their wind-power. Hell, D was tired, he had to be, but due to the way the music people have dogged him, I think he felt he had to "go full force" and his band mates did too. We all appreciated seeing them in Sao Paulo, it was an excellent show, and Roy has his gang rockin!! Helluva show; now WE want some, too! And, not just in the major cities. (smile y'all)

    I can understand what Roy said about travelling especially air travel having done quite a lot of it myself,somebody once said to me "do you know it takes one whole day for you to readjust to a new time zone that is either one hour in front or one behind the zone you just flew from" so on a positive note if Roy arrives at the destination too early or the gig gets put off for a few days that's good for his health because he can chill out before the gig,mind you I'm sure that Roy knows everything about all this time zone shit.

    I remember going to virgin records back in 1987 ? Or around there . Anyway I bought the latest Bobby Watson lp on blue note and there was a trumpet player on the lp that was about 17 ? I thought who is this guy ? Roy was the real deal from then on . It used to make me feel so frustrated that people like him and so many others were so great and younger than me. But they are the music! Saw Roy with jimmy heath at the blue note club in New York in 2008 , they were doing the business.

    Yeah, I am not known as a musician like Roy Hargrove who has died recently. The man here is telling everybody how a famous musician life is and how hard he must fulfil the duties he's paid for by his promoters. This happened to many musicians including Michael jackson and luckily I quitted before anything bad could happen to me since also I was an unknown saxophonist from South Africa. You see my dear friends this musicians died after he was sent to a Dialyses machine treatment when he was sick instead of being given rest for an extended period by his promoters. I have evidence of a couple of musician friend who died after being diagnosed for kidneys malfunction and the end was death. So it goes without saying that the musicians are and were always diagnosed wrongly by doctors. There's a difference between tiredness and kidney problems. One should do a research on dialysis machine therapy and how it is a death therapy!!! I'm not a doctor but a musician who is health conscious and as I said before some of my music friend died after dialysis machine therapy. This is very very serious and i want families of musicians who work hard like Roy did to be vigilant for their sons and daughters. You see it's difficult for musicians to retire and the fatigue accumulated becomes dangerous and life threatening but the only cure I know is for that musician to take a prolonged rest instead of being sent to the doctors. Rest in peace my friend, Roy, but soul and spirit will live forever. Thanks.

    You can't say Justin Bieber is a fake, after all he's a very talented boy : he plays guitar - knowing 3 chords is enough to write a song after all, he's a singer - no,he doesn't need auto-tune because he's out of tune, that just makes better songs, he even dances - spinning around while holding a camera is a dance move,yeah,hours of practice,and most of all,he's so talented everyone wants to play with him, such as.......everyone.No,there's definitely no possible comparisons between him and R.H.!

    Okay, I'm not defending Roy here (because I'm not a HUGE fan), BUT let's get real here: musicians are not flocking to Justin's band because of his talent to play and dance/write, they are playing for him because he is a very high PAYING gig. And mind you, I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of Justin's either; more power to him for becoming the TH-cam and later world sensation that he is. Britney was before him, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Sean Cassidy, Leif Ericson, the power of candy-pop, y'know?

  • @cocomaire
    @cocomaire 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that it's a shame jazz musicians aren't appreciated, but that's the society we live in. Justin Bieber isn't given the red carpet treatment because people think he's a better musician than Roy Hargrove. It's because he can generate more money. I don't dig Bieber, but I wouldn't call him a hack. He's just a kid. He probably doesn't even know what a hack is. He is clearly talented, and probably has the potential to become a great drummer if he can get over this pop idol nightmare.

      Any business man who is in business for himself, pays for his expenses somehow.... when I go on vacation its at my expense.... this dude needs to stop whining about how he doesn't get preferential treatment like pop artists do.... if "you" want that lifestyle than make that music.... duh.

    • @ohioplayer
      @ohioplayer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it all evens out in at the end...While he may not make the quick money that the more popular entertainers make, he will probably last much longer in the music business if he takes care of himself and should have a means to survive financially in his older years..

    • @ohioplayer
      @ohioplayer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And it's easy for you to say quit whining..he has the right to complain..He's one of the world's greatest musicians and he has worked and studied very hard at his craft...He SHOULD be better compensated for making great music and no he doesn't need to water down his art..

    • @jackslim3419
      @jackslim3419 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ohioplayer Yeah, hes a human being....he has feelings of course, he's allowed to whine.... but so what? Why would anyone want to hear about it, does nothing but sours his name and reputation. The rate of compensation for anything depends on supply and demand....quality of art is totally subjective. This interview mostly serves as the accurate portrayal of the esoteric dichotomy between being an artist and being an entertainer.... artists whine, entertainers entertain.

      I always try to characterize musicians as well..I'd say INFJ as well.

      Hector Colon I'm an INFJ as well. Studying Myers Briggs has been a huge help. ST users are quite different from NF users

    So true about the red carpet not being rolled out for jazz musicians... it's so unfair and sad to see such amazing and TRUE talent in Roy Hargrove and other luminaries have to deal with the bullshit while talentless HACKS like Justin Bieber - who I really shouldn't even be using in the same sentence - have the so-called red carpet rolled out for them because of their popular "music". Shit's messed up.

    I think Roy was pretty tired at this point. Worn out from the kidney disease. Like Roy my own brother died at age 49 from Polycystic Kidney Disease. It wore him out too.

    And who's to blame him? How would you feel if you put your heart and soul into a gig and then have to go back to your hotel that YOU payed for, to then turn on the TV to see a pathetic, popular artist sing on a stage and know that they have nothing to worry about because they get payed millions more than you do, have a 5 star hotel, and put absolutely no effort or care into there music? It's a shame. Roy Hargrove does his work because unlike others, he cares.
    Forgive my rant haha.

      I care. I had no idea things were that bad on the jazz scene. The struggle is real
