Hello friends! Due to this video I've had a friend start a Disciples of Caliban army. Due to postage errors on his decals, I decided to take a crack at making some STLs he could print. Four hours and ten tutorials later, they exist! And now I'm making them available to the public for free! Six standard variants and two Phobos variants are available for free on my Cults3d page (sorry, no Terminator pauldrons, couldn't find a good template). While I have not test printed them, they should theoretically work. Technically I was supposed to wait for my friend to test the print, but fuck it! Feel free to use them on your own Disciples of Caliban or use them for a custom army! cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/disciples-of-caliban-pauldrons-regular-phobos
Watching you paint lesser-known chapters while discussing their lore is a great way to relax. Thank you for bringing these schemes into the light of day.
As somebody who's painted almost half a company's worth of Storm Wardens, I'm always happy to see them get more love. They really do have a striking scheme, though all the chapters you showed off are lovely.
@TheLichsLaboratory You absolutely did! I went with silver instead of gray, my bird brain just likes the shininess of it. Though I should do the highlights with drybrushing like you did, edge highlighting them when they're fully painted is a pain. That seems so much faster!
This has me baffled too. Like if a chapter with a coke problem constantly denied it yet, their armor was white, their symbol was a mountain of snow and their name was the Line Snorters. But no, it's not them, it's the successor chapter called the Coke Addicts that's the problem. Seems legit
I am LOVING this series. The mix of lore and really straightforward paint schemes is just brilliant and makes for a much more entertaining watch. It's really something that could be drawn out for many videos. I definitely agree about the need to paint straight lines for halved/quartered schemes. As someone painting an Angels Sanguine force who have a halved black and red scheme, a wonky or out of alignment line really sticks out. I do still find when painting squads of marines there's always going to be a few I've done where the helmet or chest isn't quite straight, and usually I've discovered that well after I've started doing washes and other finishing touches. I have found though that even in a worst case scenario, sponge chipping one of the chapter's primary colours and other weathering techniques can REALLY help with disguising those sorts of mistakes.
Thank you very much! And you're definitely right. I've certainly overweathered in the past but when you get it just right no one notices the small mistakes
At the time I was making these vids I wasn't doing conversions, just paint. Still. I think I'd do a cloak to match that popular artwork of the Storm Wardens that I think is from the Deathwatch RPG
Unless the Astartes Praeses becomes a topic for a video, I don't think I'd be painting Marines Errant any time soon. But I can give you this text guide on how I'd do it >start with a black primer and either brush on a bright silver or spray it on >paint the white half of the armor with a light grey >drybrush the light grey with a white >paint the things like gun casing and joints with a dark grey and the other metal bits with a silver >wash the whole mini with a black wash while wicking away pooling wash from the large surfaces >use a blue speedpaint or contrast paint diluted 1:1 with a glaze medium and glaze it over the silver panels to get a metallic blue (the brighter silver on the surface the better the effect is) >paint the eyes red and do the heraldry, either with freehand or apply a decal
thank you so much for including the disciples of caliban iconography guide. Since custom transfers are different for me to obtain. I’m definitely deranged enough to try it out for my army.
Hey friend. This may be a very random reply on a month old message, but you're still working on Disciples of Caliban I ended up making some custom pauldron STLs for people to use. I might need to use some of these smaller chapters' colour distributions to influence my own successor chapter... Keep it up, this was great!
3D printing sure is a way to lift some of these obscure chapters out from the pages of the books. The lack of decal was always what kept me from many chapters.

This is an awesome video format! It's really refreshing to see someone painting chapters other than the main ones and hearing the lore at the same time
Thank you so much for the content. In my opinion, the only channel on which little-known chapters are painted, where, as a result, you can see in miniature how it all looks, and not in the picture from GW. And if you like it, then a tutorial on how to paint it. Otherwise, there are only legions of founders everywhere. I wish there were more traitors in the warband)))

@ As a matter of fact, I already have a unit of Hellblasters painted in the scheme of few of the Successor Chapters. My sergeant is a standard Green Wing. But the other four are painted with the colors of the Guardians of the Covenant, Blades of Vengeance, Angels of Vengeance and Penitent Blades. I even have an Intercessor painted with the colors of the Angels of Redemption.
Obscure Chaos warbands were definitely a contender for a video subject and something I'd love to do at some point. And putting that pic of a Punisher was a mistake. I knew someone would ask me to paint it 🤣
I did a Storm Warden and Subjugator in my Deathwatch army. The Storm Warden is in a Bladeguard Veterans squad who bodyguard the watch master. And the Subjugator is in a heavy Intercessors squad that are all Imperial Fist successors.
These DoC look a lot better than the recent short. Nice and dark! And clean, as always. And GW really needs to come out with new decal sheets whenever they make new successors! xD Some of these designs are almost insane to try and freehand! Almost makes me wish I'd decided on either just straight black or silver, instead of the black & green split. Consecrators would be easier emblem to freehand, and crossed swords already exists as decals. lol Thankfully, a lot of the old boys on BolterAndChainsword put together some decal sheets people could print out (if they could find any Testors decal paper..). ^_^ That's a really nice tut for the freehand!
Thank you! And I agree. I actually did model some DoC pauldron STLs and put them up on Cults3d for free for my friend's DoC army. No termie pads sadly since I couldn't find a good template for one, but it's had a good number of downloads so I'm glad it's helping people lol
Dude your commentary is getting better and better. Actually loving these videos. Can’t wait to see more random chapters. You need to do a video based on cringe OC deviant art chapters
I've considered a "redo" video of sorts, going back to reattempt the minis I'm the least satisfied with, but if there's an opening in that then I could certainly try
The Heavenfall blade of the Disciples of Caliban's first Grand Master is now wielded by the Grand Master of another Unforgiven chapter- the Consecrators. These guys don't seem to be listed on any collection of Chapters of the Achilus crusade, which is a pity, because their entire 3rd company is MIA in Jericho reach. I've just started an army of the Consecrators' 3rd Company, which is how I ended up watching this video (you don't get much more obscure than nobody knowing where you are- and I'm trying to work out if there's a canonical campaign badge for the Achilus crusade). Your tip about using a dark grey mid tone as a base for black might be game changing for my (mostly black) army!
Very cool! Consecrators were pretty heavy competition to get into a video since they're so damn cool. And I hope it works out for you like it does for me. It really helps prevent that panel line shading from getting lost in too deep of a black. My go-to trifecta is Vallejo Black Grey, Neutral Grey, and Sky Grey. Works wonders with the new formulation of Nuln Oil or Army Painter Strong Tone as the job requires👍
I love the style of painting shown in these videos. Was thinking of trying a doom eagle with a similar basecoat and drybrush before a wash. Would you do anything different for silver armour?
Thank you! My only real suggestion would be to make sure your base coat silver and highlight silver are different enough in brightness to avoid looking too similar when you're done. Otherwise you'd lose your highlights and end up wasting a little time. Something a twinge darker like a gunmetal as a base, then a bright silver drybrush before a black wash for example. Just varies on the particular paints you use but if you can hit a recess color, base color, and a highlight, it'll look great
@@TheLichsLaboratory Thanks for the reply, I think ill do lead belcher base then drybrush with runefang steel. I feel like a mid tone might cause too much of a mix. Also ive had a wet pallete for ages but never opened it. Your paints seem to always be so smooth, Do you literally just put paint on the pallete then drag the brush everytime to get a smooth result?
@@nuz4209 Of course mate, I'm always happy to help. Leadbelcher base to Runefang drybrush would be exactly as described so that's perfect. Yeah I'm really fond of the Subjugators. I just imagine them proudly reporting the job is done but the planet is reduced to ashes. Like "dude I just asked you to water my plants while I was gone..." And maybe in 700 years when my backlog is done, I'll make a Deathwatch army with every chapter I cover lmao
@@TheLichsLaboratory Interestingly there are a few people out there who have done deathwatch schemes where each marine is in his individual chapter's heraldry, with only the DW shoulder pad and left arm silver. Though I don't think there's any lore to support it, who's to say that one particular watch fortress of deathwatch can't consider the blackening of their armour to be a metaphorical change rather than a physical repainting. My chapter doesnt drink babies, hell just yesterday i pulled an schola's worth of kids out of a burning building. As for thr Disciples of Caliban theyre great guys. One time we were taking fire on Magadoe VI, traitors on all side, we were about to have to use our combat knives. Then the traitors pissed off. Just a few minutes later the Disciples of Caliban showed up, covered in shit, gore and soot. They used their entire chapter to back us up. Poor bastards kept apologizing for leaving and not helping. Big hearts on those guys." - Sergeant Asinus, 3rd Company Blood Angels
More questions if you have the time to answer. Currently attempting to recreate the dark sons scheme and wanted to know what green you used? Im using Vallejo intermediate green, which looks like the right colour but i think it too bright for the white highlights to pop. Also what medium do you use for the nuln wash?
The green I used is Vallejo Flat Green 70.968. The wash I used to tint it was GW Contrast Ork Flesh diluted 1:3 or 1:4. The Nuln Oil wash was diluted with Vallejo Glaze Medium
There seems to not really be a concrete interpretation given how similar grey and silver are as colors. It twists even more if you color a 2d picture since you'd use grey to paint metals. I'm personally in the "whatever you think looks cooler" camp

"Blood Drinker here, gotta say i really appreciate the great paint job but can ya lay off the slander? My chapter doesnt drink babies, hell just yesterday i pulled an schola's worth of kids out of a burning building. As for thr Disciples of Caliban theyre great guys. One time we were taking fire on Magadoe VI, traitors on all side, we were about to have to use our combat knives. Then the traitors pissed off. Just a few minutes later the Disciples of Caliban showed up, covered in shit, gore and soot. They used their entire chapter to back us up. Poor bastards kept apologizing for leaving and not helping. Big hearts on those guys."
- Sergeant Asinus, 3rd Company Blood Angels
I hope they gave the Lion his hair back, given his STC male pattern balding he needs it more than the Disciples of Caliban
Savage 🤣
More questions if you have the time to answer. Currently attempting to recreate the dark sons scheme and wanted to know what green you used? Im using Vallejo intermediate green, which looks like the right colour but i think it too bright for the white highlights to pop. Also what medium do you use for the nuln wash?
The green I used is Vallejo Flat Green 70.968. The wash I used to tint it was GW Contrast Ork Flesh diluted 1:3 or 1:4. The Nuln Oil wash was diluted with Vallejo Glaze Medium
@@TheLichsLaboratory Thank you :) do you use glaze medium for the contrast too? or just water?
@@nuz4209 Contrast medium for the contrast, glaze medium for everything else
@@TheLichsLaboratory Thanks :)
@@nuz4209 No problem chief
You're really really cool
I think you're pretty cool too 😎
🔥🎸🔥
Wait, Storm wardens dont have silver shoes? What the fuck? I had no idea.
There seems to not really be a concrete interpretation given how similar grey and silver are as colors. It twists even more if you color a 2d picture since you'd use grey to paint metals. I'm personally in the "whatever you think looks cooler" camp
gmcfosho mentioned
gmcfosho is the GOAT bro
So dark sons sound like a da successor
Kinda look like a da successor
And they pulled that champion duel shit
Some parent cheated there i tell you
Honorary Dark Angels due to behavior 😂
Do you think there are shitty telenovellas about the history of the Imperium in-universe
I desperately hope so 😂
