Everybody who thinks this is about romance misses the point of the entire scene this underscores. It is about mad obsession not romance and it is the saddest scene of the whole movie. It's about being in love with a mirage. The person he loves does not exist. Has never existed.
Exactly... this song isn’t about traditional romance that many hear/comment on the surface. It’s about obsession in the illusion of romance. It’s tragedy in the guise of romance. Herrmann was one of the best film composers that ever lived. He captured this tragic obsession perfectly. They don’t make music for film like this anymore. Beautiful rendition of his piece, hats off to the conductor and orchestra.
This is one of the best adaptations of this piece I've heard. How did Herrmann's mind even put something like this (or any of his masterful pieces) together? That's a rhetorical question, of course. All of our lives would be diminished if Herrmann had never been born. Unfathomable musical talent, at least to me.
I got the chills from the first chords!!!! 1:48 is straight out of Liebestod in Tristan und Isolde, and I love every note of it. Hermann's Debussy-ish legato strings and then their trills are so lush you can almost bite them. Splendid music!
For many, Herrmann's splendid use of strings in Psycho captures an overwhelming feeling of dread. But in Vertigo, the complex nature of romantic love and desire is given full expression in the composer's beautiful score. It remains for me one of the finest compositions to be written for the screen.
It was [and always will be] a great honour to have known "Benny" and to have produced albums featuring his music. He was a true genius. "Vertigo" is not only Herrmann's finest work, but also one of the ten best film scores ever written.
Only Herrman's "The Road & Finale" composition equal the passionate and poignant impact of this masterful piece. But this Salonen/LA Philharmonic rendition of it simply raises it to a new level .. it was like watching them recording the CD version they did of Herrmann's work. I'd have paid good money to go see this live.
This is straight out of the prelude to Wagner's opera "Tristan Und Isolde." Hermann was quoted that he took Wagner's music for this scene because it was the only music to capture the drama.
My favourite moment from any film I've seen in my entire life. When Scottie sees Madeleine/Judy again, contemplates her ghostly figure and then kisses her lips very softly. Such poignant vision and this heavenly notes take me to another place each time...
Performed this two weeks ago with the BBC Philharmonid, and its seems the LA Phil loved it as much as we did. Superb music, and Richard Wagner himself could hardly have surpassed it. The thing is could Herrmann have written it without the great man's inluence though! Great performance.
This richly evocative music always makes me think of a shivering Kim Nowak on the waterfront at the Golden Gate Bridge. Bernard Hermann is one of the giants of film composing. Apart from the influence of Wagner in this composition, I understand that a theme in Pjoholas Daughter by Sibelius may have influenced the shower scene in Psycho.
I heard for the first time this song in the movie Vertigo, and became one of my favorites songs, now i just watched The artist, and i heard the song, i cried. Beatiful!
For Heaven's sake, this is NOT a 'song'. Your music terminology has been hampered by iTunes nomenclature, which refers to any passage of music, instrumental or not, as a 'song'.
Many years ago I saw this video. Beautiful and magical sound , surrounding my whole body! But after this short video, there was a fast and dynamic performance. I'd like to see that video also. At that time Tom Hanks introduce E-P Salonen.
I find it wonderful that Herrmann could write this way. He was passionately Romantic: Everytime I hear this I think of Wagner’s music for Tristan and Isolde. The man was the greatest American composer with the possible exception of Charles Ives.
Bernard Herrmann was one of the best composers of all times. What feeling!! Plus he really had the music be such a part of the film. He composed 6 films for Hitchcock.
I cannot say enough for Herrmann's composition here and EP Salonen's orchestration for this Hitchcock masterpiece for Vertigo. Right now I am wrestling with who's performance of "Scene d'amour" is better EP Salonen's or John Williams. What do you think?
Thank you for this post when my music is reviewed ,writers forget how B H influenced my music l . Another wonderful composer s Pierre .jansen. Le Boucher. Rupture .claude Chabrol films
Scotty first sees Madelyn in the restaurant ... Hermann put into music exactly how a man feels when he first sees that woman of his dreams. I wonder how many young women Hitchcock destroyed as Scotty and Gavin destroyed Judy?
Eva Marie Saint survived NORTH BY NORTHWEST, but then I think she had a good time playing the "sexy spy lady" in that movie. She'd already appeared in numerous pictures before NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and she seemed to remember her experience with Hitchcock with good-humored serenity.
Everybody who thinks this is about romance misses the point of the entire scene this underscores. It is about mad obsession not romance and it is the saddest scene of the whole movie. It's about being in love with a mirage. The person he loves does not exist. Has never existed.
Thus the tragic undertow of the piece.
Your comment alone was a powerful description. Thank you x

This is brilliant. This perfectly depicts the main theme of this film. Thank for sharing this.
The most beautiful film music ever! I'm a composer and I got goose bumps everytime I hear this.
Me too.
One of the best pieces of music of All Time. Hands down.
You are so right Louis!
Is clearly inspired by Wagner's Tristan
This is one of the best adaptations of this piece I've heard. How did Herrmann's mind even put something like this (or any of his masterful pieces) together? That's a rhetorical question, of course. All of our lives would be diminished if Herrmann had never been born. Unfathomable musical talent, at least to me.
Very well said. This is a piece that appears to have no precedent in terms of compositional structure and melody as a film piece. Pure genius.
Instablaster.
Herrmann had it all.
Elegance of genius. Journey to the Center of the Earth compositions make me want to open a shrine to Herrmann
PERFECT.... Herrmann would have cried to hear this performance... Perfect!
If you don't have chills at 1:48 go to the doctor.
Mr. Nucci I got the chills when it started.
Absolutely Allessandro.........why the 6 down arrows? I don't understand how someone could not be moved by this.
Alessandro I TOTALLY agree. This is one of the best soundtracks ever composed for a movie.
I got chills...they're multiplying!

William McDonald Agree
Especially those trombones in unison..echoing powerfully underneath those strings
Vertigo. Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak & This....that's as good as you can do it.
It was [and always will be] a great honour to have known "Benny" and to have produced albums featuring his music. He was a true genius. "Vertigo" is not only Herrmann's finest work, but also one of the ten best film scores ever written.
Salonen's conducting is magical, so very committed. B H would have approved of this performance.
This is so beautifully played that even though I've heard it on the VERTIGO soundtrack many, many times, hearing it here is like hearing it anew.
goddamn. to be there. in all that sound. to feel every wave on the air. unbroken by the digital knife.
This brings me tears!
Every note oozes romance...stunning!
Only Herrman's "The Road & Finale" composition equal the passionate and poignant impact of this masterful piece. Love the way he uses the harp.
Gives his compositions such a magical aura
Incredibly moving; a Bernard Herrmann masterpiece
One of the best compositions of all time... and fantastic performance! Bernard Herrmann is such an amazing composer
I tear up at 1:50. This composition is so beautiful, it just flows like a river of romance!
It´s so Wagner alike..
you are so right Victor!
Yes
This is straight out of the prelude to Wagner's opera "Tristan Und Isolde." Hermann was quoted that he took Wagner's music for this scene because it was the only music to capture the drama.
Wonderful piece from the best scene of the best movie of all time. Thanks for posting!
redbirdcraig1 I agree. I've rated "Vertigo" as my all time favorite for awhile now.
My favourite moment from any film I've seen in my entire life. When Scottie sees Madeleine/Judy again, contemplates her ghostly figure and then kisses her lips very softly. Such poignant vision and this heavenly notes take me to another place each time...
They used this BEAUTIFULLY in The Artist!!!
I would love to watch the film with a live orchestra playing Hermann’s score.
Performed this two weeks ago with the BBC Philharmonid, and its seems the LA Phil loved it as much as we did. Superb music, and Richard Wagner himself could hardly have surpassed it. The thing is could Herrmann have written it without the great man's inluence though! Great performance.
It's been about 30 years for me to shiver with this music ..
Love transformed into music ...
Absolutely haunting!
I saw John Williams conduct this at Lincoln Center in NY a couple of years ago, just as magical.
Padre Fábio de melo
So did I. Yes, IT WAS.
Oh! My! That must have been so wonderful astroboy!!!
I read that John Williams was influenced by BH. You just can’t any better than those two amazing composers.
Sublime! Only Word to describe such a masterpiece
Beautiful interpretation of one of Herrmann's greatest lushest passages. Thanks so much.
I heard for the first time this song in the movie Vertigo, and became one of my favorites songs, now i just watched The artist, and i heard the song, i cried. Beatiful!

Wonderful music.

Beautiful music...

One of the finest movie soundtracks of all time. And certainly, Htichcock's greatest film.
best? I think North By Northwest tops it. That crop duster scene was (and still is) a mind blower
So beautiful , every time when I hear this, I can cry.
B. Hermanns Komposition ist eine grandiose Umsetzung von Wagners Vorspiel (Liebestod) zu Tritan und Isolde. Ich liebe Vertigo.
Such a Gorgeous Piece. Sound Quality of this Video is just AWESOME. Thanks for uploading this.
If you can hear the famous four sixteenth notes (D-C#-C-C#), it's like Tchaikovsky and Mahler.
It's called a ritornello
He adored both composers
This piece blows my mind......
Many years ago I saw this video. Beautiful and magical sound , surrounding my whole body! But after this short video, there was a fast and dynamic performance. I'd like to see that video also. At that time Tom Hanks introduce E-P Salonen.
This is just so much Tristan!!!
And I love it!
Maravilloso Wonderful
By far the most perfected version
Excellent performance. I am sure that Benny would have approved of Esa-Pekka's conducting.
Maravilhoso
I find it wonderful that Herrmann could write this way. He was passionately Romantic: Everytime I hear this I think of Wagner’s music for Tristan and Isolde. The man was the greatest American composer with the possible exception of Charles Ives.
Amazing performance. Tristan chord lusciousness.
So good
Bernard Herrmann was one of the best composers of all times. What feeling!! Plus he really had the music be such a part of the film. He composed 6 films for Hitchcock.
Herrmann was an Artist with capitol A. This score is one of the best ever composed
fantastic score
The icing on the cake, which is already of the highest caliber.
I cried in the end of The Artist especally when they played this song
The LiebesTod from Tristan. Harmonies that don't resolve for many measures heightens the emotional intensity of the music.
Congratulations to Bernard Herrmann for winning an Oscar this year!!! ;D
does this make anyone else cry?
@MrGsegs it's on itunes under vertigo soundtrack
Musique magnifique
One of the best readings of this cue...ever! The cantankerous Herrmann would have gone..."Way to go EP!
This is a great peice. I enjoyed prog avant band Estradasphere's rendition of it!! it caused me extreme feelings of euphoria
Right on brother... you hit the nail on the hit. A homage to Wagner.
Yep..hit it while many others flopped!
Yes
Herrmann, a 20th century Romantic
I cannot say enough for Herrmann's composition here and EP Salonen's orchestration for this Hitchcock masterpiece for Vertigo. Right now I am wrestling with who's performance of "Scene d'amour" is better EP Salonen's or John Williams. What do you think?
1:50 breaks my heart.
po prostu piękne
Wow: at 3:54, listen to the trombones in harmony. They linger, it's fucking majestic.
I especially enjoy 0:00-4:58
Every time.
About as Romantic as it gets . Hitch was a Romantic.
"Und eine solche Liebe kennt keine Wiederkehr."
My friend who studies music just showed me how closely this resembles a Wagner opera. Very interesting.
Thank you for this post when my music is reviewed ,writers forget how B H influenced my music l
.
Another wonderful composer s Pierre .jansen. Le Boucher. Rupture .claude
Chabrol films
Does anyone have a pdf good score for vertigo? Would love to study this
which one I'd love to listen to it
@CAK11891 Sorry!
though I didn't reveal much of it, did I?
Beautiful! (But there is a 27 bar cut after the 4th measure…)
Does anybody have the background music for
Duel in the sun
Does anybody have the background music to duel in the sun
Where is Mr. Salonen from?
Finland
For Mysterious Island it was a nod to Sibelius, Ravel, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsekov
And Wagner ..
The Artist brought me here...
Can you believe this was written for - a movie?
A great piece, clearly inspired by Wagner's Tristan
1:48 just kills me. Loss for superlatives.
Who's cutting onions here
Wagner "Tristan and Isolde" prelude
Also the Liebestod
Scotty first sees Madelyn in the restaurant ... Hermann put into music exactly how a man feels when he first sees that woman of his dreams.
I wonder how many young women Hitchcock destroyed as Scotty and Gavin destroyed Judy?
Eva Marie Saint survived NORTH BY NORTHWEST, but then I think she had a good time playing the "sexy spy lady" in that movie. She'd already appeared in numerous pictures before NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and she seemed to remember her experience with Hitchcock with good-humored serenity.
Is it me, or does Herrmann’s music draw a little inspiration here from Tchaikovsky?
Me, me!
It’s just a cooler version of Tristan and Isolde
GARY OLDMAN conducting
Sorry B. Hermann, just a bad copy and paste from Richard Wagner's 'Tristan und Isolde`'
jimek pzdr
Sorry emotional
