    Part 13: • Teddy Riley on New Edi...
    Part 1: • Teddy Riley on Growing...
    --------
    In this clip, legendary record producer/songwriter Teddy Riley looks back on what life was like for the members of Guy after the success of their self-titled debut album and first tour. He reveals that they were illegally squatting in houses that their former executive producer, Gene Griffin procured for them. As the discussion moves along, Riley also shares with the VladTV viewers that Aaron Hall initially blamed him for the group's financial troubles, alleging that he had been colluding with Gene Griffin, but he wasn't. Then, Riley said that Griffin had been conducting business in an unprofessional manner until their road manager, Frank, informed them about what was really going on. Unfortunately, Frank began to extort Riley. So, Riley enlisted the help of his old friends Alpo and Rich Porter for assurance. Lastly, Riley talks about the moment when he and his mother finally reached a boiling point with Frank over the money that he was owed for making so many hit records.

    I met Teddy Riley at a movie theater in Virginia Beach, during a matinee at the concession stand. This had to be 2000, I was in the Navy. Cool dude. Just a really pleasant vibe. He could tell me and my girlfriend recognized him. Dude was clean. I mean immaculate. His attention to detail in his appearance was exceptional. Crazy thing is 22 years ago he looked just like he does in this interview.

    Message board, I can remember this story he's telling like yesterday, everything he's saying is absolutely true. At the time, living here in Alabama, I loved him so much, I use to sit around wishing I could get my hands on him and sit him down and talk to him, to try and help him mentally get his life back on track. I had heard about Gene Griffin and the things he was doing. In fact, I knew something was fishy going on, because his name was on everything Teddy Riley did, and at the time I kind of felt like he was using Teddy's name to lace his pockets. I mean Gene's name was on "everything" Teddy did, it was insane. So when the demise of Guy started, my thoughts were, "this can't be true", these guys had the music world on it's knees and nothing or nobody could touch them. I thought Aaron Hall was losing his mind trying to go solo. Guy walked away from literally millions on top of millions of dollars dealing with Gene, it was so sad. And to this day, the hip hop industry continues to mimic Teddy Riley's style, yet he receives no royalties from it. From Alecia Keys, Mary J Blige, Beyonce, etc, all using Teddy's style, and people don't even know it.

    That's crazy, so Gene was an 'official' member of Guy getting paid. And, the production company's name was called Gene Riley (GR) Productions...C'mon Teddy. What a scam artist, can someone really be that blind? if Teddy was getting $10K a song in the beginning, at some point the price of brick had to go up...and he was still ok with just $10K? Crazy!

      Man, this was late '80s/early 90s. Teddy was an artist and just worried about his producing. He wasn't into the paperwork and what not. Gene is a crook and took advantage of that and Teddy trusted him. That's it. He wasn't asking questions. He was just taking whatever Gene gave him. Keep in mind, Gene was his "godfather" as well.

      You completely misunderstand the gangster business practices Gene Griffin was infamous for. He basically owned Guy and Teddy's assets so he paid him what he felt like and knew Teddy was stuck. It's not math it's leverage, financial & physical.

    The more I hear these stories the less empathy I have for these artists. I can't fathom not understanding how I am to be paid for my work. Education is so important. So many get caught up in the craft, then the fast money, the fame, drugs, and lose sight of the future.
    Fast money goes just as fast as it comes folks.

    • @LonnieLBrown
      @LonnieLBrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You have to realize that artist like him and other musical geniuses have a deep passion for music. And it's all they care for and live for. So, the business is really a minute aspect to them. They thoroughly enjoy their craft and when you hear about these artist who got ripped off. Most of them will say, all I wanted to do was my music. I noticed it when watching shows like 'Unsung'. So, it's not about the money, but it should be as well.

    • @BellaFelicia

      @@LonnieLBrown I agree with you and do not negate that fact...It's just so unfortunate and disheartening to see them being taken advantage of.

      Understand too most of these young black artists are “perfect prey” for the vultures of the industry or crooked managers because of their lack of education on how money works as well as how the record business operates. Fresh from the hood, wanting to do big things. Very young. Plus it was a different era, now we have information at the tips of our fingers with technology, back then they didn’t have the resources we have.

    • @Jumpaz416
      @Jumpaz416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not just about the education. It's about the leverage that leave artist vulnerable. It's like a pimp praying on females that come from poverty and broken homes. Most of these talented artist from the hood and don't have the capital or connections to put themselves in position. By the time they build a resume/reputation for hit making, they are locked into long term contracts that don't favour them.

    • @Jumpaz416
      @Jumpaz416 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not so much about the education. It's more so about the leverage. Timmy Gatling (an original member of Guy) knew something was wrong and Gene just got him out of the picture and replaced him with Aaron Halls brother. Truth is if you are not financing your own dream or have a direct connect to the label (no middle men involved) you have to decide if you are willing to get extorted until you have some leverage or find your own way to the plug.
