great analysis marc! 23:48 really is fascinating to me. he didnt really need the tanks anymore and was willing to trade the tanks for a base but he wanted to save the thor to build up a squad of thors. A lesser player wouldn't have done that, definitely never saw anything like it in the noob games I play :P
Soul changing his name to Spirit made wonders to his game. I hope you could do a deep dive on his games too. He was a dark horse in the tourney and performed exceptionally well. IMO a lot of terrans underperformed especially from team NV but fans are overlooking the fact that other terrans did great like yourself, heromarine, ryung and spirit. I was really hyped up til the semis.
I feel like he tilted when that ling runby got in his base, but otherwise he totally couldve taken the series. Too slow on the depot raise. I felt that in my bones tho and understood why he tapped out lol
IEM Katowice is always a bit of a disappointment near the end for me. You get to see awesome, balanced, competitive play near the beginning of the event, but as you go deeper into the competition Zerg usually begins sweeping everyone and coasts on to the finals. Seeing Maru come up with awesome game strats and still losing his series to Reynor and Serral is a movie I've seen too many times before.
really disappointing to see him go out in the R8 but heromarine put on a good show and while I'm not usually a fan of ZvZ, Serral and Reynor really went at it
It's just that there's an imbalance of the skills of players. The top guys of Zerg are so much stronger than the other races. We can see here just how powerful Terran late game is, and yeah I think Maru with his Terran has the strongest late game of all. If Maru is at the least even going to late game, it's game over for Zerg. That's how strong Terran is. But in the next game, Serral just didn't allow Maru to be even with him in early+ mid. Maru also almost did it vs Reynor but lost because of his own huge mistake feeding his units to broodlords, so that was on him.
@@uThermal Unless they change the map pool or format, I feel like it will almost always be a Zerg winner. The long lead up time gives all the Zerg time to study their opponents, get used to the maps, and it didn't help that the map pool was quite Zerg-favoured once again.
gr8 cast uThermal, thanks. just curious - in your professional opinion, dyou think Maru's form tailed off coming into Katowice? in the second half of 2021 he was basically punching everyone in the teeth (ASUS ROG, King of Battles, Dreamhack) but looked a bit sloppy starting in GSL ST1 and then IEM K, didn't look like he was on form
I think its a mix of a few things, first of all I don't think Maru's form dropped off towards the end but he did seem a little more lost vs Protoss ; In both the ST and IEM he was doing a lot of aggressive super risky builds which made me feel like he didnt believe in his TvP. Besides that I think Maru always plays a little bit worse overseas at the global finals, whether that is pressure or him just really not liking travel I don't know. Last point is that I think Terran does thrive a bit on surprise, and with all the top zergs being able to study and prepare for his special bio and mech style his chances definitely lowered a lot in the global finals compared to the 'smaller' premier tournaments.
I actually played a weird bio/mech/starport combo kinda similar to this but against toss... double rax ghost, 4 factories 2 with tech labs, and 2 BC starports (2 more later)... It was a very fun game, and with EMP archon and zealot tanking no longer works so it could potentially be a strong stratergy to use. What is even funnier is that this was not silver league, this was actually in the upper rungs of Diamond league, then again, it was on NA.
Something it should be noted, to nural a ghost, then have the hotkey ready for use of the EMP in the group, use it, before the infestor gets shot, requires SUCH pinpoint precision and timing...is unreal.
great content Uthermal! also very happy you participated in Katowice, and yes guys, Zerg is totally OP, and the worse is that a unit nerfing will not fix it since is a race design issue. Still love the game.
Maru ist such a beast and always seeing him playing there is one thing that I srsly always See in him and what makes him so freaking dangerous, his patience! His patience is his biggest weapon for sure that pro have a REAL Talent to keep a cold head and the strike at the right moments
I thought we were going back in time to the WESG tourney where Maru crushed Serral for some reason. 2017 maybe? A shame because all the VODs were removed.

@@marcomarin1196 Mines are simply too random and unreliable. I don't want to put my faith in a unit that has an attack that can be avoided entirely or otherwise mitigated with good micro - especially considering all pros have good micro. Not only that, I kinda hate the fact that mines seem as likely to hurt my units as the zerg's. Then there's the fact that it's a one-shot per fight unit; so while it does high damage *if it connects,* it's useless for the rest of the fight. *Mines have a dps of 4.3.* While big hits are exciting - they're rare. Zerg pros are so good at avoiding early game damage with mass queen spam (barf) that it's highly unlikely you can stop them from droning with impunity.
