- Big Tractor Power is out in the field with a 300 hp CASE International 9260 Tractor working with a 26 ft CASE IH RMX 340 Tandem Disk and Unverferth Rolling Harrow. The model 9260 was the last ridged frame for way steering tractor produced by CASE IH. This tractor traces its roots back to the 1966 CASE 1200 Traction King. Viewers will follow this big tillage team in the field as well as learning about the tractor's production history, specifications and price tag.

Love that big red. I sometimes joke about John Deer and other’s but truth know I love them all and they are all great. It’s just that IH and has always been my favorite. I love the whole farming community and all of the equipment!

I operated a Case 1470TK back in the late 70's. This was the crab steering model that once you got the hang of it, you could make very tight turns. There was a lever behind the seat to your right that turned the rear axle. Pull left or right. Very intuitive. The 504 engine had a great sound with the turbo under load too.
The tractor was retired though when the front axle seal started leaking and was not repaired. You had to continuously fill and it just got too hot. I was driving down the highway when the axle housing shattered and the front tire bowed out to the side and the front end went down. Gear oil all over the highway. Neighbor bailed us out by coming over with his 3-point JD 4440 and got us off the highway. Sad ending to a nice machine.
Finding a rigid frame Steiger is a real unicorn. I’ve only ever seen them in pictures.

Man that is some tractor. I'm no tillage expert at all, but I get the impression that the big Case IH's were the supreme tillage beast. Am I wrong?

This was a nice find. I saw one on a dealer lot in the 90’s and have a brochure on the 9260. It is neat to see one in action.

I was the CIH territory manager in the central valley CA where the Case Power stores had done a decent job of selling rigid frame 4890/94 series. Once the Steiger acquisition was made in Nov 86, most customers wanted the articulated frame design, even the stores. Had one independent dealer who still liked the rigid frame - 9240/60s did not sell well here where they had been the standard under Case prior to the IH merger. Just a preference I would guess.
I love the set-up it's awesome. But I also couldn't help but notice how fond the seagulls are of the machine. Its funny because they followed him around in the field.
That disc harrow exposes thousands of bugs and larvae its like spreading chicken nuggets in front of a pack of foxterriers

Those tractors back then were great looking tractors. IMO, Case/IH should have kept the Steiger green colors for all their 4WD tractors right up through today in honor of their heritage.
Our farm had Case 4wd's from the 1470 to 4894. I so wanted one of these but dealers wouldn't budge on the worth of our 4894 so never got one. I know of someone who bought a 9240 new and I believe still has it.

4:05 I think you mean foot-pounds instead of pounds per square foot for the torque spec. I had a toy Case tractor like that when I was a kid. I don't know what happened to it, but I wish I still had it.

We had a much earlier version of the Case 4wd line, a 2470. The crab steering could be handy at times, and it would run same speed in reverse as forward-13 mph either way, which was a PITA when farms were 12 miles apart. Cab was decent for its day but hydraulics were primitive and the 3 speed power shift was extremely jerky when cold. Had major engine problems, Case paid for reboring and installing new liners in the 504 engine. Best thing I used it for was plowing snow during the years when we had real winter in Indiana, 1977-early 80's. Ran a JD 8430 of about the same vintage and it would turn sharper than the Case and had a lot better hydraulics. Seemed about the same on fuel consumption and problems.
Interesting consept with the 4 wheel steer. I've never seen one before.

Why were these retired? It’s surprising they didn’t catch on more versus the traditional centre pivot models. We’re they more prone to maintenance issues with the crab steering versus an articulation? Did they not turn as sharp? We’re they just an odd duck relative to the conventional design guys we’re used to? Seems like a pretty nice piece of kit to me.

The disc setup must pull hard a 26 foot for a 300 HP tractor . We pulled a 26 foot disc on a 150 HP 1556
I drove one just like it when it was brand new. Also had a Deere 8760. There was no comparison. The John Deere was so much easier on you,and made much better. That case was so noisy and had a turbo whine that would drive you crazy. Turn around tool twice the room. When you drive 16 hrs a day comfort is all you care about.
Is this somewhere near the Syracuse NY area or farther north? Nice video, dirt looks pretty dry with the dust flying.
I've noticed some of those earlier CIH Steigers have narrow grilles vs wide ones. Is it the smaller models with the narrow grille?
The 9110. 9130 and 9150 were capable of row crop with the inboard planetary axle - even had a sliding front axle mount on the 9110/30 ala Super Steer that was to compete with / replace the 2+2 before Steiger was bought by Case IH in Nov 86. Tom St John of Steiger (formerly of IH) was the father of that concept .

It’s the strangest thing to me seeing so many large field tractors without gps in any capacity, never-mind auto steer. Most people here on the prairies of canada have had gps in every field tractor for at least 20 years.

It happens. A rock get caught and bends or breaks a blade. I am sure it has been fixed.
17mph my butt we have a 9330 and 9380 and both go 20mph plus

@Pat Loebertmann it is we've only ever had 2 problems with it the serpentine belt and a seal on a 90 fitting

Earth worms. Seagulls from Lake Ontario are very common during tillage in Western, Central and Northern York. They are surprisingly quite in the field compared to the beach.
