    One great perk with acrylic paint: u could start this painting with out an under drawing.....Since acrylics dry so fast, theres not much need to ‘paint in the lines’ start with ur dark, create a large mass & then layer mid tones as u see them in life or from a photo. Do not blend. Keep ur strong brush strokes.....mixing each mid tone separate. Less mid tones will create a more loose painting or u can add more mid tones to tighten it up.

    Thank you so much for this video! As a self taught oil painter i have, from the start, naturally painted realistically and could not figure out how to paint in the expressionistic style! Thank you!

      @@thevirtualinstructor Why havent you responded to some of the very good questions here? Do you use a retarder to slow drying time? Do you allow each layer to dry before applying the next?

    If you, like me, were having trouble keeping track of the colors used, they were:
    Titanium White
    Burnt Umber
    Yellow Ochre
    Ultramarine Blue
    Prussian Blue
    Cadmium Red
    Cadmium Yellow
    Burnt Sienna

    Hello! Great tips. Just had a couple of questions. Did you paint wet on wet? It would have been nice to see your inspiration piece to see how you made the shapes of light and dark.

      Can the teacher please answer this important question ? The teaching has great benefits, but it lacks: 1. Colors used written in the description. (Thanks to Emily we know now. 2. The process, wet on wet or wet on dry ?

    Matt, thank you very much! Do you use any medium for acrylic paint. It dry so quickly.

    • @friedricengravy6646
      @friedricengravy6646 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vladimir Belostotsky The smooth painting surface will slow down the dry time especially where the paint is applied thick. The most useful solution is to mix your mid tones. Blending such as pulling two edges together in order to create the mid tone is frowned upon, even in oil. Light in reality just does not blend this way nor does it create color that can be achieved simply from blending a dark & light together.....Then, the more mid tones u mix & apply, the tighter the painting becomes or the opposite. A dark value, a true color, & a light will create a very loose painting. This approach will also allow u to keep strong brush strokes....without losing them to blending or over stroking. I saw it had been 8 months since ur comment, with no reply. I paint with acrylics as well. I too tried to slow down the dry time with retarders & mediums. The more I studied painting in general, mainly oil...I realized that the fast dry time in acrylic is a bonus, not a hinderance. It may seem more complicated at first, with out ‘blending’ but in time u will enjoy seeing more true color & no longer will u b frustrated with fast drying paint. Ur paintings, loose or tight, will look richer & more professional. The only time I use a medium with acrylics now is to glaze.....Use gloss to avoid cloudy darks from flattening paste. I hope this helps. Happy painting!!!

    This is a beautiful tutorial but I do believe that the title is misleading. I understand the loose and expressive doesn’t have to be quick BUT when people search the term they are looking for ways to get out of their heads and paint more EXPRESSIVELY and loose hand. This painting technique is VERY intentional. It’s like saying I’m going to draw a wiggle line but draw each wiggle deliberately instead of organically.

    Are you making up terms? I'm literally googling "shape of value" and it's not producing much. Look man, if you don't know what you're talking about that's fine, just don't waste my time with a video labeled "tutorial" when all you're gonna do is paint a pear and regurgitate word salad.
