This is one of the most poetic songs he’s written. basically he’s saying that his present-day romance has helped him overcome past heartbreak. It’s better than all his previous loves.
this is one of my favourite hozier songs ever. it’s amazing. pure happiness. the lyrics, the melody, his singing, everything. i love the quiet, more poetic bits, then they draw into deeper, more scream worthy parts. i love it so much holy shit
Discover Hozier lately and I feel some kind of feeling I can't describe while listening to his songs. Like that " like real people do" Beautiful but creepy at the same time.
This song makes me think of: Ren fairs Dresses Running through a forest Playing in a creek Exploring nature Autumn Trees Fairies Dancing DND campaigns Dreaming Playing in the woods as a kid Spending time with a beloved pet Going on a trip into the mountains Watching a sunset Hugging a loved one Flower fields Cozy bonfires Revisiting a childhood place Reading a really good high fantasy book Sewing a costume Looking forward to the future
For me, this stunningly beautiful song captures the creative tension between a gentle acceptance of death and a fierce love of life. Hozier first pairs his gentle acoustic guitar with a near-whisper in which he acknowledges the human consciousness of death: “that the sound of the saw must be known by the tree”. This is a fact that he has made peace with: “I fretted fire, but that was long ago.” But then in defiant counterpoint, he adds piano, percussion and chorus and in a near scream belts out: “But that’s not tonight, where I’m set alight”. Here he becomes Dylan Thomas raging against the dying of the light. I wept at the lyrics “with each love, I cut loose. I was never the same watch the still living roots, be consumed by the flame. I was fixed on your hand of gold, laying waste to my loving long ago.” They reflect the fourth remembrance Buddhism: “There is no way to escape being separated from all that is dear to me and everyone I love.” But rather than sink into nihilism at this realization, Hozier’s answer seems to be: so what? I’m alive tonight. you (life) are so good to me.
This is a love letter in which he tells an old love that he has searched for her in every woman he’s loved. That he’s loved souls more akin to trees and that he himself is a tree but that he somehow finds himself craving the fire.
@@CnmnVxn I think it's the other way round? Of course, your interpretation is valid, but he does refer to trees and wood like it was his past love, and his new love is like a fire burning all of it away. That's just my thoughts anyway.
@@innuwu152 that definitely makes sense too. Idk my interpretation has personal meaning to me so probs just my own bias showing me what I wanna see. Can't deny how beautiful the song is regardless

Is... is this written from the perspective of a tree?
I really hope it is
lmao three years late but fuck it. i believe he is comparing his new love to trees, and his old love to fire that he can't get away from
