“The land does not belong to our people.”
So South Africans that own farms (traditionally boers) are not ‘your people’?
I love your videos that show better sides of Africa but sometimes the exclusion of non-black Africans (like the boers that have been there for longer than some black tribes) feels like you don’t welcome non-black people in Africa.
Btw, its also really difficult for most white South Africans to buy a farm. It’s only the few lucky ones that have inherited one. They happen to be mostly boers because of SA’s complicated and long history for which we can’t blame them as you can’t choose your parents. As a side note, if you were born in Europe for example and didn’t inherit, it’s even more impossible to ever buy a farm.
The riches in natural resources across Africa are never exploited by foreigners alone. It’s mostly in combination with or solely by a corrupt mostly black elite. It’s the government that is not introducing enough financial help for farming. Most people in the comments got that right though.

Look at Zimbabweans they stripped bare the equipment and sold the copper and some are now begging former land owners to come back to farm. Farming needs education understanding the soil, animals, crops etc it's not something you do coz these Afropan africanists are saying land will restore dignity to blacks theres loads of land lying fallow coz many failed.

You do not have to be an expert on economics to know why some africans are going to the west for better pasture. Am sure you are educatrd enough to know the reasons. Unfortunately not all of it but in province like Limpopo people grew up with food from their own land Farms and larger scale gardens. I’d like to believe the same thing in other provinces like Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal. However, we do need to acquire more land and ensure it’s productive.

We own two indoor vertical farms in the US, and processing, and we are teaching youth how to use technologies to grow across multiple seasons, and business models to go to scale. I am aggressive when it comes to opportunities it's either I am all in or out that's me and that's why i own 3 Commercial farms now and I will continue chasing more commercial farms because they're up there on the markets but Us Blacks we don't want get ourselves dirty we look down on farmers.. Thank you Maya for this interview, I wish you can interview more black farmers from different provinces and farming backgrounds to get a more broader and different perspective about the land issue (specifically COMMERCIAL land) and black farmers in general
Land issue (commercial land) in South Africa is a real challenge even our ruling party and government doesn't have the balls to tackle it head-on once and for all, for the benefit of majority black people.
So the reason why we say commercial land instead of using just land in general, is because what we as black South Africans are mostly fighting for is commercial land, because majority of black South Africans are born here and we already have and own our residential land (the houses we own in townships & suburbs) and mostly own even more bigger residential & farming land from different parts of rural areas where we come from in all 9 provinces. This is where our ancestors were born and come from, then our parents and children mostly relocated to bigger cities for employment, where some own a small piece of land in the townships and suburbs. This is mostly residential land, wanted to clarify that part.
Commercial land is what we as blacks in South Africa are fighting for, because we want to use the land for agricultural purposes and many other forms and types of businesses, to be part of the country's value chain in business and be part of growing the economy in a much more bigger scale like our white, coloured, indian and other race counterparts.
The bulk of commercial land in South Africa is still owned by the minority race (whites). Black ownership of commercial land is still at the lowest compared to Coloured, Indians and other race outside of the black race.
We DO HAVE BLACK COMMERCIAL FARMERS in South Africa and the % has slightly improved although still way too low compared to white, coloured and Indian commercial farmers.
Our governement must change the policies to make sure black people get their land back so we can farm and feed our nation. This is where Nelson Mandela FAILED us black South Africans.
I totally agree with the brother there, that black South Africans are NOT lazy! we work very hard! The apartheid system did a great job convincing people that black South Africans are lazy meanwhile black people are the ones running and working on their businesses and growing them daily 🙄 how ironic!!
Black people want their land back so we can work!
Crime is another huge challenge in our country! very sad indeed, due to high unemployment and corruption. Although the country's economy is largely in the white race hands, the fastest growing economy is now in the townships (where black people own the land), the government is aware of this, they know it and we already have lots of black South Africans owning and running businesses in townships. This is where jobs are gonna be coming from. The transformation is very slow though due to lack of government support (capital/finance support)
I had my SOLAR panels stolen 3 times and the last break-in was last month April and this time they stole my SOLAR PUMP as well at my farm. but we soldier on coz farming is my passion and I want to contribute towards food security in the country and continent as well as contribute towards job creation
❎As black South Africans, we must STOP this narrative that we can't farm! it's total BS! our parents and grandparents lived on farming and our ancestors lived on farming way before the white man came to Africa! We really need to stop putting ourselves (blacks) down like that especially here in South Africa.
South Africa also has lots of small black farmers who farm in small agricultural holdings (plots of 15ha and less) we just need more commercial land so we can do our thing!
In most rural areas of South Africa (outside of big cities and provinces) black people do own lots of land and majority are involved in livestock farming, let us not overlook that part also.
Thank you again Wode Maya for visiting our beautiful country South Africa. Hope next time you make it to other provinces like EASTERN CAPE, MPUMALANGA, LIMPOPO, NORTHWEST, NORTHERN CAPE.
    Please do come back😊

You were eloquent and articulated your points well and were quite technical BUT your statement that we don't own land as black people in SA is misleading. You should be specific that we don't own arable/ commercial land. Because if you go with that narrative, them other Africans get it so twisted and their narrative can be exhaustive and we have to keep on explaining ourselves as they always come from an angle of envy and jealousy.

@@mimitamimi546 I wasn't referring to residential land; you don't own the ground beneath your house even if you have a title deed. I was referring to land, specifically agricultural, commercial, and mining land.
Most black people do not own land in urban areas that's true; in Gauteng, for example, ninety percent of usable land is still owned by white minorities, and many townships are unable to expand and develop because municipalities has to pay owners.
However, in rural areas, one can get at least a hector on which to grow poultry, plant trees, etc.

@@walterlebzax9585 yes you do…that’s what a title deed is, you own the land. And that’s what title deeds in urban areas cover in SA (I know this because I’ve researched it extensively, I’m planning to move there from UK and your land rights are very respected because laws govern them…eg in other countries in Africa Ppl most of the urban land isn’t even title deeds registered as it’s under tribal land even in urban areas, Accra is an example) and that’s why you can sell the land and house to another person to change the structure on it and do with the land as you please… demolish the structure and possibly use the land for other uses

Since you mentioned that you want to buy property in SA, here's the truth. I'm a builder myself; even if you have a title deed in town, you can't do whatever you want with it, you can't move a wall or dig a pool without first notifying the municipality, not you in person, but your engineer or architect.
The municipality must either raise property rates or deny your plan for their own reasons, such as the inability to build on servitude lines. If there's ton of gold underneath your house, you can't dig up since it doesn't belong to you. In other words, the municipality, not you, is the custodian of the land inside its borders.
However, there are few regulations in rural areas, with the exception of approval of building plans for safety reasons, as people can't just build unsafe structures or use hazardous materials. However, if you own land in rural areas and there is gold on it, you can apply for exploration or mining rights and do whatever you want with it; the same rights apply even to tribal lands. The chief can't simply take your property since, the chief has a surname too, the chief only owns what his family owns. I'm not sure about Ghana, since the topic wasn't about Ghana and I'm South African. Sorry for the long reply.

This was great, wise man. South Africa is blessed to have people like him…now the government must give more ppl like this guy farming land& have more Black farmers. I like that SA doesn’t follow disastrous Zimbabwean land grabs…politicians in Zimbabwe have land, hardly any regular Zimbabweans as they now economic refugees here in UK& in SA…most of Africa doesn’t produce its own food either unlike SA does & even exports produce to most of Africa& parts of Europe, Asia& Americas, so the move from government to not do land grand through I’ll thought land expropriation is good governance…might be slow in changing commercial farming land ownership but seems right. Slow & steady wins the race
