Best video editing channel i have ever seen in my life. If video editing or something similar is not your actual career you need to get on that ASAP! Seriously love your work!
From my personal experience, I'd say start with some small 2D game with Game Maker, it's pretty powerful what you can do with code, but it's not as complex and overwhelming as Unity, so you don't have to spend a week just learning how to animate a sprite ;) It really doesn't matter what language you start out with, because the concepts and patterns are largely the same, a loop is a loop, an if-condition is an if-condition, it's just written a bit differently.
Catching up on older videos, this was pretty cool! I love your video style for the post mortems, really interesting! This does look like an authentic G&W game too! I remember playing them as a kid, thanks for the trip into the past! On to the next one!
just discovered your channel 3 days ago and I love it. I play these videos while working on my own game maker game as inspiration lf sorts. Fantastic work good sir.
Pixel Prophecy well im struggling to actually finish my game so watching you complete something even after your numerous inspiration breaks (dining out and getting coffee lol) makes me think i can pull it off. Ive been notorious for getting a game mechanic to work and never touching the game again
+Cypress Grella I feel you, bro. As I am writing the script for one of my upcoming videos I realized that I can count all non-jam games I actually "finished" with two fingers. But seeing it through till the end is very satisfying. Hang in there, just don't let yourself get distracted.
amazing Channel !! keep it up :D i watched all the ludum dare post mortem videos and im binge watching it again xD, you really inspired me to create my own game ,thank you so much!!!
Thanks, glad you liked it. The next time there's something worthy of documenting, I'll have my camera ready, which will be the next Ludum Dare in August 2016.
Congratulations!! Finishing your first jam-game is very special and no small feat :) I'm happy to have inspired you. Cheers to you and many more jams to come!
I just bought 2 courses on coding with unity, I’ve worked a decent bit with html and python so I hope these help me learn, and I will be able to turn my game ideas into reality just like you.
So this is my favorite game you did got Ludum dare. I was thinking about it today actually and remembering how you had said that it wasn't very difficult and that's why you added the pressure gauge. I know the jam is over with now but I was thinking how you could have made the trap doors move randomly so your timing had to change as well so you don't just repeat the rhythm.
Thank you! I even play it on my phone on occasion, but it's too hard for me ;) Interesting idea with the trap doors, that would certainly make things harder. Another idea I had was introducing more than one factory worker fleeing at the same time...
I'm new to video game development as self-taught and also working in a regular job it's so exhausting but whenever i watch your documentaries and see your work flow i feel motivated . Love you videos so much and ( your editing is amazing ) By the way please can you tell me which graphic tablet you are using :)
Just found your videos are binging watching them at the moment. i was afraid to enter the ludum dare because i havent done much game dev but watching your struggles and seeing your end results is really inspirational. i like your setup, do you have a desktop and laptop, or is your laptop just connected to all the monitors?
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy my videos :) And I am running a desktop under the, well, desk and my three monitors are hooked up to it. Currently, my screen configuration is HD - UHD - HD and I never want to go back ;)
very cool, i'm running my laptop and 2 monitors but the plan it to upgrade my old desktop and have a similar setup. what version control do you use for switching between you desktop and laptop. it you be a cool video to see what setup and tools you use, if you haven't done one already (still going through your videos). thanks for the reply and keep up the good work!
I don't think I mention it anywhere in my videos, so don't bother ;) My syncing solution has been Dropbox for most of the time. For bigger projects and archiving I use SyncBack Pro but that's about it.
Hi Ian, thanks for watching! I'm currently busy with writing the script for my latest LD documentary. And to answer your question: My money-job is working as a colorist for film, broadcast & web, essentially making things look pretty, such as this: www.redbull.com/en/stories/1331691747079/inframes-specially-filmed-clips-of-red-bull-events
Pixel Prophecy Wow, that looks great! And I can't wait to watch it, you're videos are of an amazing quality. Have you have considered getting a job in game development, or is it more of a hobby?
Ian Cox Much appreciated! :) From what I know of the game dev industry, I am pretty comfortable with working solo on my own pace on stuff. But being able to live off my game dev would be amazing. Still, a long way to go, so for the time being it's a hobby, yes.
Pixel Prophecy No problem, you deserve more views! And yeah, for companies there is a lot of crunch as I've heard. I'm going through AP Computer Science right now, and my dream job is to be a game programmer. I have quite alot of knowledge with Java, and I recently bought Game Coding Complete (Fourth Edition) for when I learn c++. Do you have any tips for game programming?
what is the thing you use to make coffee?? I'm rlly interested in this - as my own coffee maker constantly needs cleaned to prevent mold and it's big and bulky : ( Anyway - great vid - rlly looking forward to finding out how you make your coffee so easily. will sub for answer ;) hahaha - thanks!
Thanks for watching! And that thing is called a French Press. You fill it with freshly ground coffee (pretty coarse), add almost boiling water, stir it, let it sit for a couple of minutes (the longer, the stronger the brew) and then push the mesh down and enjoy! :)
Maybe you wanna taste "İskender" too. It's a variation of döner served with pide, yoghurt, tomato sauce then some hot butter poured. (really hungry now, it's 01 am...)
I just compiled it as a test version to check my GameMaker to Android setup. Sadly, I don't have it anymore, the only Android version is on my phone, never to be launched again ;)
Originally because devs could openly talk about what went wrong with their games after they were "dead," meaning off the shelves in stores. And then came Steam…
Your french press skills disappoint me. Preground coffee, ramming the filter down. Man, grind that stuff fresh, unless you buy it preground so it's all consistent. But you gotta push that plunger slow so the oil emulsifies into the drink and gives you a nice creamy texture. Oh, good game and great video though. I don't know how many channels could get someone to binge watch game devving.
+John Maguire Thanks for the feedback. I am more of a coffee junkie than a coffee connoisseur I'm afraid. At least I ground the beans a day before the jam and kept them air sealed for what it's worth. And thanks for binge watching even though you must've cringed every time I was near my French press ;)
Why is there so much code? I see that you put down lots of code I just don't understand why you need that much code. Game maker is supposed to be simple and easy to use, but the way you use it looks complicated. sometimes I looks useless but then, I am not super good in coding.
It's true that Game Maker is very friendly to get into and there's a lot you can do with drag-n-drop actions or just a few lines of code. At the same time, it allows for more complexity and control with its Game Maker Language (GML). And I assure you that every line of code is needed; I don't know of any coder who writes _more_ code than what's necessary. But what constitutes "necessary" highly depends. Ofen you can go for a very simple implementation that just works, but the more you add, the unwieldier that simple code might get, up to a point where it's almost impossible to track down bugs or even recall what part is doing what. That's why I try to structure and design my code that it's easier to maintain in the long the run.
Lmao you have to be the weirdest dev I have ever seen. Everyone else I know just lock themselves into their room and after hours of failure just cry themselves to sleep......
i just realized, the barista was conny
MIND BLOWN
looooooooooool
gg mate
enragedev Considering he mentioned her later in the video, I assume he was in a relationship with her at the time.
Best video editing channel i have ever seen in my life. If video editing or something similar is not your actual career you need to get on that ASAP! Seriously love your work!
This was a really well made documentary, enjoyed it a lot!
Your apartment looks amazing btw :P
These videos are of amazing quality.
I like in the end when he say "I don't care if this game sucks, but I am happy because is my own game" Thats my dream too, make my own game.
+franklin alonzo Thank you! Just stick with it and try to finish something very small for starters. You can do it! :)
The thing is that there are too many programs to make games that I dont know which to learn deeply
If it's not inspirational I don't know what is.
+Schipunov Thank you very much! Glad you also found my struggles inspiring ;)
Catching up on older videos, this was pretty cool! I love your video style for the post mortems, really interesting! This does look like an authentic G&W game too! I remember playing them as a kid, thanks for the trip into the past! On to the next one!
Thanks for watching all my old videos, LionJeff!
just discovered your channel 3 days ago and I love it. I play these videos while working on my own game maker game as inspiration lf sorts. Fantastic work good sir.
Thank you very much! Never thought that my crappy LD games could inspire people ;)
Pixel Prophecy well im struggling to actually finish my game so watching you complete something even after your numerous inspiration breaks (dining out and getting coffee lol) makes me think i can pull it off. Ive been notorious for getting a game mechanic to work and never touching the game again

this video is so well made!!! how have you not got millions of subs!
Hey Stanley, thank you very much for watching! I don't know why. I've even asked my pal pewdiepie for advice but he doesn't respond to my faxes ;)
Pixel Prophecy haha!! Don't worry he doesn't respond to me either!
Just found your channel today and I have to say: You're the best channel I found this year! Keep the awesome videos coming! Super ^^
Thank you! I'll do my best :)
amazing Channel !! keep it up :D i watched all the ludum dare post mortem videos and im binge watching it again xD, you really inspired me to create my own game ,thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad that my videos could inspire you. All the best for your game(s)! :)
Seriously deserves more recognition! I'm hooked on these vids man!
Thank you, glad you enjoy them. A new one is in its final stages of production right now, so be sure to check back :)
I love these videos. I randomly ran across one of your newer LD post mortems and have been watching the older ones one at a time :)
Hey nacs, thanks for watching! Doing my best to make those documentaries entertaining :)
Awesome! I loved this documentary. Can you make more videos like this??
Thanks, glad you liked it. The next time there's something worthy of documenting, I'll have my camera ready, which will be the next Ludum Dare in August 2016.
Pixel Prophecy Thanks for reply! I am waiting for the next one.
Very cool, congratulations on making the game and the documentary
“Coffe always helps.” New favourite TH-cam creator 👌 ps I have the same mug (7:39)
Coffee is my coding fuel. And I hope you didn't put the mug in the dishwasher like I did haha
"I'm old, so i need to go to bed early." ;-) :D Didn't notice that in there before.
Seems like I've grown younger since LD34 ;)
Amazing video! A lot of tough went to it and it is definitely worth it! Keep working my man
Oh, I will! :) Thanks for watching and commenting, Cecobent
I just(yesterday :P) submitted my first LDJAM game. :)
Your video inspired me to take part in my first game jam. Thank you very much.
Congratulations!! Finishing your first jam-game is very special and no small feat :) I'm happy to have inspired you. Cheers to you and many more jams to come!
Thank you! :D This means a lot.
Yes, I am looking forward to more gamejams too! :)
My dad drinks dark black coffee just as soon as it's done out of the coffee maker. That stuff is like bitter lava.
Oh wow! I should try lava then. With a bit of milk, though ;)
I just bought 2 courses on coding with unity, I’ve worked a decent bit with html and python so I hope these help me learn, and I will be able to turn my game ideas into reality just like you.
Yeah! Go for it! :)
So this is my favorite game you did got Ludum dare. I was thinking about it today actually and remembering how you had said that it wasn't very difficult and that's why you added the pressure gauge. Ludum Dare 46 is coming, so let's start binge watching your post mortems again :D
Thanks, Tudvari! Your recurring viewings keep bumping-up that click-counter. 😅 Always appreciated!
Famitracker mad respect.
I'm new to video game development as self-taught and also working in a regular job it's so exhausting but whenever i watch your documentaries and see your work flow i feel motivated .
Love you videos so much and ( your editing is amazing )
By the way please can you tell me which graphic tablet you are using :)
Thank you, Adil! Sometimes they even motivate me myself, to be honest ;) And the tablet is a Wacom Intuos 4 and it's really great!
"+3 on intellence and perception and whatnot." haha nice!
I love your LD documentaries.
What device did you use to record the sound at 2:58?
Thank you! :) And that's a Tascam RD-100 Mk 2 portable digital audio recorder.
Thanks a lot! :) Do you know a good digital recorder under 100€ ?
I don't, but I as long as you don't go too cheap, you can't go wrong. Anything is better than a headset mic ;)
okay cool! Thanks for the quick answer! :)
Just found your videos are binging watching them at the moment. i was afraid to enter the ludum dare because i havent done much game dev but watching your struggles and seeing your end results is really inspirational. i like your setup, do you have a desktop and laptop, or is your laptop just connected to all the monitors?

You had Kirby as an idea I had the same haha
Great Documentary ... Prefer this over most movies ; )
Wow, thank you Rohan! That's such a compliment!
Love these videos! Question: what's your job?
Hi Ian, thanks for watching! I'm currently busy with writing the script for my latest LD documentary. And to answer your question: My money-job is working as a colorist for film, broadcast & web, essentially making things look pretty, such as this: www.redbull.com/en/stories/1331691747079/inframes-specially-filmed-clips-of-red-bull-events

How are you making such quality videos? do you have multiple cameras and which brand ? Canon?
Austria? Whoa, hey there neighbor :D
Cheers! :)
what is the thing you use to make coffee?? I'm rlly interested in this - as my own coffee maker constantly needs cleaned to prevent mold and it's big and bulky : (

nice video! was wondering what tablet you were using for the art?
Thank you! That's my trusty old Wacom Intuos4 M with the slender Classic Pen.
nice, thanks haha
awesome!
I love it
Does conny work at starbucks? BTW: great documentary
8:20 too real ;_;
Was that Starbucks lady cortena?
+Kabloosh Do you mean Cortana? Because she lives in my computer, although not making coffee ;)
Yeah I meant that.
Which engine and language do you use?
For this one it was Game Maker Studio 1.4 and the Game Maker Language (GML).
Thanks for answer. It's really fun to watch and I hope you can eat a lot more Turkish meals. I am proud of our kitchen :D
Thank *you* for watching! :) And nothing beats a yummy döner kebap and maybe some baklava too... Now I want one lol.
Maybe you wanna taste "İskender" too. It's a variation of döner served with pide, yoghurt, tomato sauce then some hot butter poured. (really hungry now, it's 01 am...)
I will give it a try, that sounds delicious!
"Still I went to Starbucks"
Wait you can't necro an comment section on youtube, damn
I still got a notification, so it kinda worked ;)

Moooooostache

Haha, thanks Hassan :)
So how we can download android version
I just compiled it as a test version to check my GameMaker to Android setup. Sadly, I don't have it anymore, the only Android version is on my phone, never to be launched again ;)
Are your parents wealthy or something? How do you have all this stuff and a nice place to live without a job?
WHY DO THEY CALL IT POST MORTEM?
Originally because devs could openly talk about what went wrong with their games after they were "dead," meaning off the shelves in stores. And then came Steam…
@@PixelProphecy well i love all your post mortem videos. By far best i've seen on YT.
Your french press skills disappoint me. Preground coffee, ramming the filter down. Man, grind that stuff fresh, unless you buy it preground so it's all consistent. But you gotta push that plunger slow so the oil emulsifies into the drink and gives you a nice creamy texture.

So you like Starbucks because your wife works there?
I liked Starbucks even before she worked there for a summer, and I still visit on occasion ;)
Salzburg ist in Österreich?
wtf
#100comment
Sowiet ich weiß gibt's auch ein Salzburg in Rheinland-Pfalz aber mein Salzburg ist noch knapp Österreich, an der Grenze zu Bayern :)
Lmao you have to be the weirdest dev I have ever seen. Everyone else I know just lock themselves into their room and after hours of failure just cry themselves to sleep......
+Guy that likes games :P Haha thank you! But I feel I'm not weird enough, though ;)
