I have a general idea of what Rockhill is talking about when he mentions excluded thinkers at 9:56, but could anyone help in giving names so that I can better understand whom he is specifically referring to?

"Global Theory Industry" is a great term to use, thanks for the interview!

Critical theory industry is akin to the young Hegelian idealist Marx and Engels criticized.

I like this guy, I like how he communicates, I like what he says, but he's really got to get beyond such flimsy critiques
    1. Purity & Prestige - That other guy isn't as pure commie and not as much in the elite commie group to be relevant
    2. Sellout. That other guy is just chasing personal incentives
    3. Poisoned Chalice / dichotomous thinking. That other guy isn't pure enough, therefore anything he says about this topic promotes the non-commie things he says rather than the commie things he says.

One should at least try reading The Sublime Object of Ideology before dismissing the man completely.

What a consummate hack. Rockhill is behaving like much more of a careerist and opportunist w this tirade against 80 year old communists than those he's accusing of careerism/opportunism. Badiou has like 12 different books across his oeuvre addressing how the US Imperial apparatus used propaganda to conflate "totalitarianism" with communism --- he is avowedly against this idea, it is *in no way* a blind spot for his theory. Same goes for the others mentioned (who are also not anarchists). 21st century communism will not look like 20th century communism, simple as. The anti-intellectualism on display here is astounding.

Well yeah, 20th century communism was largely the communism of semi-feudal industrialisation and nationalism. There aren't any large semi-feudal countries left that could revolt without being immediately crushed by post-industrial powers.

I've had this feeling about Zizek since his clown show with Peterson

  • @tsenotanev

the statement that zizek's "original ideas" have been "borrowed" from marx is particularly ridiculous .. it's a surreptitious attempt at summoning the public disdain for plagiarism and directing it at zizek
of course zizek doesn't have original ideas, he himself would probably agree that there's nothing new since hegel .. and if his aim is to show how deep and prophetic thinker marx is of course he is going to restate marx in different ways
anyway this is exactly like taken from a 19th century critique directed at hegel really... unoriginal, charlatan, eclectic, in bed with the publishing mafia and thus the ruling class, opportunistic... i'm sure schopenhauer would totally agree it's a perfect description of hegel... it's exactly the same accusations that have always been directed at anyone who's somehow been co opted by the dominant culture...
what is clear is that if for his personality faults zizek has allowed himself to be co opted by the dominant culture doesn't suddenly and miraculously nullify his work ... certainly most of the kids who listen to him neither understand why he has to repeat all those stupid jokes nor have they read or are interested in reading his book on hegel or any of his work .. but those same kids are not interested in reading marx either .. and even less are they going to read gabriel rockhill
if gabriel rockhill wants to feed at controversy that's fine though .. happens all the time .. but he ain't gonna convince anyone that he's the better marxist and the more honest fighter against the oppression of the logic of the market

Cogent answer to the deeply disingenuous chapo fellows.

Zizek intro is a bit like in music industry where a company friend will change one line of a song to get co-writing credit and change the song in a way industry wants vs the artist. IE, the manipulation of creatives by an establishment.

What's his beef with Badiou? I can understand Hardt, Negri, Mouffe, Judith Butler, etc. but I assumed Badiou was still an old Maoist.

Rockhill is a purist and a cop. Stop policing theory. (and Ranciere is clearly not an "anarchist" lol)

Yeah, sure. By buying his [i.e. Rockhill] books 'Capitalism' will eventually toppled itself, right?
