You are freaking brilliant!!! Your thought processes amaze me! Love this DIY! I bought some DMG 6 months ago because I didn't think there was an alternative. I have been trying NOT to use it because I worried about the expense of replacing it! Now I don't have to worry! Amazing. Thank you so much for sharing!! Keep sharing! From a person who is disabled from MS, these money saving tips are a blessing!!!
The great thing about Petroleum Jelly is that it has no PH because it's just hydrocarbons. This means it shouldn't yellow your paper either. When you add the alcohol to it, you're just removing some of the water. It's considered a soft parafin wax and it comes from refined petrol. The only thing is that in some cases it could darken the paper. I tell people stuff like this a lot- Many of the products that have been co-opted into scrapbooking are either already art mediums or stuff you can get at the hardware store. I saw an amazon review for texture paste where a kid used it to spackle a project that was supposed to look like a wall. Wall spackle itself only costs about 3.00 for a small tub of it. It just goes to show you that it's easier to sell people on products if they are used to specific brands.
Belinda Short - thanks for that tidbit! I love learning. Now I’ve found 2 people to subscribe to on this post (more experiments, Pink Poodle Crafts!). crossing my fingers this works! And that I find my tub of Vaseline!
Going to make this on the weekend. I'm in the process of watching all your videos. Your the type of teacher I needed for all the neat inexpensive tips. Now I have you. Thank you very much for sharing.
That’s incredible, I’m both a card maker and a watercolour artist as a hobby, and I will be able to seal all my work now. Thank you so much for this great tip. I wish I’d seen you before. ❤
OMG girl....I was just looking at this on Amazon last week and thinking about buying it. Now thanks to you I don't have to...I can make my own! SCORE! Thanks so much for sharing and I love the resist it is AWESOME!
This is a life saver! I have recently switched to gouache from acrylic due to health issues. This will allow me to do mixed media without everything reactivating. I hope you know how smart you are! Thank you so much!
That's really great. I love your willingness of always trying to make your own versions of some of these popular products. I just fell in love with you after making my gelli plate from your directions. :)
Wow!! This is awesome!! Kristina Warner uses the distress micro glaze on he envelopes she make by hand...I had never heard of the stuff before...in the comments section on one of her videos some one said chap stick worked the same as the glaze. But you mad science recipe looks to me to be the best!! Btw...what you made looks exactly like the distress micro glaze...exactly like it!!!!! I did recently purchase the glaze instead of the chap stick...but I'll be using your recipe when my container runs out!! And I saw Tim Holtz do the stencil to....this is soooooooo awesome....are you a scientist for real??? Lol!!! Thank you so much the DIY distress micro glaze!! So cool Stacey!! 🦋🦋🦋
OMG!!! I was having a really rotten day, one of those "I just want to curl up a cry" days. And this is such a great discovery you've shared, that I'm giddy with excitement and can't wait to locate a small jar so I can play. 😃 Thanks a hundred times over and keep up the great job.
you saved me $ 9.00 dollars by doing this video. Thanks for the tip.I made some and i love it.It is cheaper than the Tim Holtz Distress Micro glaze.Joan
Ooh yeah I See What U See so so damm cool ur da bomb hunny Thanku so so much for sharing Sharing is truely Caring with the crafty peeps:)):)):)):)):)):)).
That's is sooo cool Stacy!!! You are a craft genius!!! Not only a sealer but a resist too....holy cow!!! This a fantastic product and money saver....thanks for sharing this!!! :) Hugs...Janie
What an awesome idea! I'm all about people making a product and putting it out there to sell, but we all know how expensive the majority of crafting supplies are. There is a difference between making a profit and ripping people off, which is what I've felt about this very small pot of Micro Glaze from T.H. I appreciate how your mind works and very grateful for sharing your new process here. TFP!
OMG! This is amazing! I am so going to try this. I'm so busy anymore I don't get much time for crafting. But after watching this I am going to have to make time. The things you do are amazing and creating things like this to save money, awesome. Thank you for this and all your videos! TFS Hugs, Peggy
I recently die cut some butterflies, watercolored them with distress ink and now wanna with gloss medium without smearing my ink; although I don’t need to make my own micro glaze (at this point in time anyway) your video is the only one that answered my exact question...”will a sealing medium adhere over micro glaze?” So thank you 💞
Wait whaaat? I’m so happy I found your channel! I’m out of craft budget money (actually “over” the budget lol) but was very interested in the glaze. This is so worth a trying. You’re a genius! TFS!!
Hi Stacy. This is awesome. I saw another video where someone used plain petroleum jelly but adding alcohol is even better. In the other video it was used to seal inkjet printables both front & back to avoid water from messing up the ink. I wonder if cardstock could be sealed to be used for a stencil after shapes are cut out. Resist is a great idea. I'm definitely going to follow ur instructions. TFS. Tere
This would definitely work with cardstock, you would just need to be slightly careful because petroleum jelly is a little bit of an emmolient and it may penetrate whatever you cut, which can make it slightly softer and easier to tear. . Emmolients get between fibers like oil. I'd use it on something like cold press watercolor paper where it's more likely to sit on top rather than to get into it. Cardstock tends to be thinner rather than dense.
Well lady, thank you🙏 so much. I will be having a play with materials today. You are such a darling sharing with us, knowing we don’t have a wealth of money to buy gesso, Ranger products etc. You allow us to play when otherwise cost may prevent it.
Awesome. I don’t need it to be acid free or archival since I’m just making cards. I can see several applications for it. Thanks for sharing. I love your tutorials.
thank you thank you thank you for this! for so long I've been trying to find something to seal my watersolubles and now I've seen your video and I'm so trying this!!!😀
great! Just makes me angry I just ordered a Rangers pot... But now I know better than to order more! Thank you so much for showing this and helping us save money and have fun!
Thanks! I'd think it would have resisted acrylics, but with the alcohol, perhaps not??? Might be a different type of alcohol, or perhaps they use an emulsifier if the alcohol doesn't change the petroleum jelly, but well worth playing with it! Awesome sauce!!!
I just watched the TH video and he did rub/buff the glaze after applying it. But as I was watching “Vaseline” popped into my head.....but then I thought how would you keep it from getting all goopy.....then I saw your video! Tyvm for the tip on alcohol! New subbie too 😃❤️🦋💜
Im a chemist at heart.... not a real chemist mind you, just a pretend one lol for craft purposes, ive made many DIY hacks for things that are typically store bought like the distress oxide sprays, the tim holtz texture resist spray, clear gesso, among others... i love discovering new things to make :)
Perfect timing for this clever video! Just looked on Amazon before finding your video, and they want $10.74. So easy too! Thank you so much for sharing. 💜😎
I bought Dorland's Wax Medium, 4 ounces for just over $10.00, from Amazon. It is the same product and I love it. The only issue I have had with it is that I made a die cut with Xyron adhesive on the back and really had to burnish it from behind. Since the person I sent the card to never acknowledges getting my cards I will never know if it held up. I like your DIY version, but I am nearly 65 and likely won't use up the Dorland's before I die!
I tried this with Vaseline Blue Seal petroleum jelly and surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol), and again with plain white petroleum jelly (petrolatum) without alcohol. I don't think the alcohol is needed if you use petrolatum. Both sealed my paper perfectly without remaining greasy or sticky. And petrolatum is very inexpensive, so that will be my preference.
Vaseline "contains" petroleum jelly but also has other things in it and i think thats why when using it to make the micro glaze diy, the alcohol breaks down the other oils and stuff in it kind of bringing it back to just the petroleum jelly base so yes, I would assume you can just use petroleum jelly if you can get that. Most stores here dont sell that, they usually sell vaseline or other off name brands that too have other ingredients other than just petroleum. :)
you can add that but it wont make any difference in the outcome and in fact it may make it so it wont properly dry once applied to the paper and potentially leave finger prints.
Does the sponge tool take on the color from the distress oxide or can you just keep using the same one for the glaze with different projects? Thank you.
I wished for it and you made it happen :)we don't have the Tim Holtz one in my country, I was thinking of how to get one! I will try immediately. Thanks for the video, you are great!
Awesome! I need some because I ordered some oxide sprays and they come off on your hands!! Great! And it makes the colors more vibrant too!! Love it! Thank you!
You are freaking brilliant!!! Your thought processes amaze me! Love this DIY! I bought some DMG 6 months ago because I didn't think there was an alternative. I took your concoction and then I took a cheap white candle and melted some of it down and and mixed evenly. this is even better! Thanks again

GIRL... You are amazing! 👍😉😇 These branded art materials cost the Earth... Yet usually made from cheap ingredients. THANK YOU!🙏
👏You are a thinker...a wise woman! Thank you so much~💐
I’m late to the party, but this is awesome! And Tim Holtz buffs his distress micro glaze with a paper towel after application, too.
Okay...the resist is AWESOME! I can't wait to try this out. Thanks for being the mad scientist!
Made and used some. Your a genius. Thank you so much. Saved some buckaroos
So glad you made this video I just looked at the price of micro glaze and you can tint it to make it vintage with a little brown, awesome indeed
Ha!!! Love it!!! As a resist with the stencils!!! The possibilities are endless!! Thanks for rocking it girl!! Always, Leslie

Tyfs.. I’m in the midst of a project that needs sealed. No micro glaze in sight, but here you are saving the day!
How did I miss this!! Thank you for being a mad scientist!

I use aclyric medium over any water-based inks and I use Vaseline to prevent my pages from sticking when l close my art journal 😊
This is awesome, thank you! I'm new to this and just bought a bunch of Distress inks and was VERY disappointed to find they smeared with mod podge.
Dame Pasty water-based inks always react with water use aclyric medium instead of the mod podge and everything will be ok 👍😊
OH! don't know how I missed this video. VERY COOL. Will be making some for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Your smart for thinking this out ! 😉
Ooh yeah I See What U See so so damm cool ur da bomb hunny Thanku so so much for sharing Sharing is truely Caring with the crafty peeps:)):)):)):)):)):)).
In my opinion, your idea rock!

Thank you very much for your successful experiment. It safes us a lot of money. Regards from Germany
I agree it is awesome and the micro glaze is really expensive in the UK for such a small pot.
Thanks for the tip! I love DIY

I love them apples!!! Genius!
i'm learning about all of these mediums and this one is an answer to prayer !!!
I was thinking 🤔 it got to be something simple to use, rather than buying that glaze. I will try it. Thanks
Stacy.... can I adopt you? You teach this old lady a new trick daily! LOL I enjoy your videos so much. Thank you for sharing!! XOXO Luana Therese
I tried this DIY, and I prefer the original Chapstick in the black & white tube.
cool thx for the tip I'll try both
@Maggie of House Valera Do you have to mix the Chapstick with anything, or do you use it neat?
Good idea
I recently die cut some butterflies, watercolored them with distress ink and now wanna with gloss medium without smearing my ink; although I don’t need to make my own micro glaze (at this point in time anyway) your video is the only one that answered my exact question...”will a sealing medium adhere over micro glaze?” So thank you 💞

Pretty darn awesome Ms Stacy

Well lady, thank you🙏 so much. I will be having a play with materials today. You are such a darling sharing with us, knowing we don’t have a wealth of money to buy gesso, Ranger products etc. You allow us to play when otherwise cost may prevent it.
I have decided that you're not just a great artist, but also a chemist! How cool! Thank you for sharing! 💞

Amazing! I love this as it takes away the chalky white powder when blending with Oxides.
Love the resist technique. Thanks for sharing ❤️
great! Just makes me angry I just ordered a Rangers pot... But now I know better than to order more! Thank you so much for showing this and helping us save money and have fun!

love it. Well done you for working it out.
you are a genius!! Thanks.

Thanks! I'd think it would have resisted acrylics, but with the alcohol, perhaps not???

Thank you sososo much♥ If I may, I´d like to add one thing in it. I tested it and it works :) Thank you for all the inspiration you sprinkle around!
what is it you added?
I added little Glyserol 85% (Glycerolum 85%).
you can add that but it wont make any difference in the outcome and in fact it may make it so it wont properly dry once applied to the paper and potentially leave finger prints.
Brilliant!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Does the sponge tool take on the color from the distress oxide or can you just keep using the same one for the glaze with different projects? Thank you.
Where are you when i bought my micro glaze?!! Thank you for sharing your smarts!
