These Veterans served their country. Some were lucky enough to return home, while others were not as fortunate. I couldn't care less about what they did or didn't bring home. It is historical. It is interesting. They earned it all!
My Dad was in the Navy during WW2. They told him he could bring home anything as long as it fit into his footlocker. He brought home an Arisaka 7.7 rifle, with bayonet. He had to cut the stock to get it into the footlocker.
WW2 were almost all gone before there was a serious effort to record them. I grew up surrounded by WW2 vets all my life until last 20 years. Even my small farm town had a lot of them, many I had no idea until they died, because they never talked about their experiences. So to me they were just regular guys, not a windbag in the bunch. Besides you can't be a windbag hero when you're surrounded by actual real combat vets. Well, one guy was OSS in the northern Netherlands (Friesland) where his family came from. I would've never guessed in a thousand years that was his WW2 part.
Some American WWII soldiers dumped souvenirs overboard on troop ships , rather than allow them to fall into the hands of officers. If they risk life and limb, let them take souvenirs and let the elitist O club fart heads lead from the front , risk their own lives, and take their own souvenirs.

My father, a WWII vet, served in the pacific. The only thing he ever brought back or saved was a bracelet he made from a piece of a japanese airplane. He told me that when he finally returned home, he threw away all his uniforms because he didn’t want to think about the war anymore. He served from August 1940 until Dec 1945.
my Grandpa served in WWII with General Pattons Army, he brought back a Nazi flag, Hitler youth knife & a bunch of Schuco toys he found in a bombed out factory, he told us when he and the other soldiers found the toys they all put down their weapons and played with them like little kids back at home for awhile. Decades later my grandma took the toys to antique roadshow and the featured them on an episode.
My father spent about 30 months in the Pacific, and came home with various mementos including a Japanese rifle given to him which he through overboard on the trip home in December 1945. He also brought various disarmed munitions with which we played with as kids. There were no restrictions if the items were not still in armed or active.
There's an old saying from WW 2 that goes something like - The British fight for King and Country. The French fight for Glory. The Japanese fight for the Emperor. The Germans fight for the Fatherland, but the Americans fight for souvenirs.
Harry Truman wrote something similar in a letter to his wife when he was serving in Europe in WWI. He said he heard a Frenchman say it. There's a layer of truth in there somewhere for sure. I'm glad you're here with us.
In the 1950s, MOST samurai swords were in the US. In the 60s, Japanese became obsessed with repatriating them, and sent sword hunters to the US to find and pay any price to buy them back. I was in a store in Seattle when two gentlemen were looking at swords in a curiosity shoppe (yes, the famous one on the waterfront). I was surprised at how NOT fancy they really were, and how small. It was a very interesting and educational encounter. I was just a shopper looking at whatever, and became interested, and the two Japanese gentlemen were very friendly and informative, pointing things out. Most swords have been repatriated.
While cleaning out my wife’s parents home after they were moving in with us, we found in an old grocery store paper sack with a large 300x500 (9.8’x16.4’) WW2 German Reichskriegsflagge Kriegsmarine flag balled up inside. Her grandfather (US) was in Kiel Germany during the war and brought this back from one of the German ships in the port. No one knew he had this and when her father saw it he immediately remembered his father telling the story how he he got it. This was many years ago, we still have it and the wife is freaked out it is in our home. Her father passed years ago so I think we’re donating it to a museum, impressive piece of evil. A buddy of mine, his grandfather brought back two German Luger pistols, he inherited them and I’ve shot one (roll stamped 1917).

My grandfather was 2nd 1st regiment he did Egypt Syria and then the Pacific campaign as casualty clearing he returned home to Australia they disbanded his regiment in 1948 I still have a Japanese bayonet he left me as a child he once said don't hold it against the enemy now the war is over but always keep your eye on the ground the sky and sea as there will always be an enemy that thinks they can do it again I miss him so much but Il never forget him and all the others that fought this tryany god bless them all
Those things all look awfully clean and tidy, which is amazing, really, after all that they’ve been through. I’m also amazed at how he managed to bring so much of it home after the war, that’s next-level sneaky.
My father-in-law was a Lt. in the Australian army in the Solomons, fighting alongside US Marines in 1944. Incredibly brave young men, he said they were. He brought home a samurai sword & a Japanese medal, Order of the Chrysthanthemum, which he took off a deceased Japanese officer. I reckon that officer got his just deserts. I have an idea he was in China (Nanjing?) before being shipped to the Solomons. Dad was awarded the Australian Military Cross for bravery during that campaign. We have been offered big dollars for it but it's not for sale. A BIG salute ALL your US Veterans & OUR cousins!!!

My grandfather was in Norway when it was invaded by the Germans. He evaded capture by camouflaging himself as a xmas tree. He survived and returned home very highly decorated.
The only thing my dad brought back was some 16mm tapes of him at boot camp and on a troop ship. I have a few pictures of Morroco and Tunisia also Italy and Berlin. He was a non combatant in the US Army. He won about 7,500 dollars playing craps and his Leutenant helped him get it back into US. I should have recorded every experience he could remember before he passed. I miss him every day. When I was a kid all the magazines about hunting and shooting had mountains of surplus war guns for dirt cheap. They would ship them to your door . Three broom handle red nine Mausers for 150.00. These adds were common until 1960s.

I remember my childhood friend showing me a beautiful, polished black leather holster and belt, with a German wehrmacht eagle and swastika buckle and a nickel-plated P38 pistol in remarkable condition, his father served during the Ardennes offensive. My father brought home a Japanese type 38 rifle, the story was, while his ship , the U.S.S Bennington, was anchored in Tokyo Bay after the end of hostilities, a barge pulled up with pile of rifles and bayonets destined to be dumped in the Bay, the rifle lacks the Chrisanthimum symbol (ground off) and he didn't want to be bothered with the bayonet.
Its nice when people realize that some parts of History should be saved , especially from those who might have given the ultimate sacrifice their life.
My father was warned to NOT bring any souvenirs back... and he didn't. He also threw away all of his uniforms soon after his discharge in late 1945. He kept some photos, his WD AGO Form 53-55, and his memories.

I have a German Helmet that was brought back I have the biggest part of my life it’s cool But back in middle school in 1974 Mann middle school Abilene Texas we had three teachers that fought in the Second World War they were the real deal too of them fought the Germans and my Texas history teacher fought the Japanese I remember he was a really great man besides a great teacher he had a scare above his right eyebrow he joke about it a couple of years later we found out it was from the war and he never cried about it he was one tough guy and a awesome teacher the P.E teacher was also football coach and math teacher he had the best sense of humor and was there no matter who you were or race he would hear you out then help you any way it took to make you understand what ever you needed We found out he fought in some of the worst battles and Mr coach Voss was also a special education teacher which I needed at the time also fought the Germans he if he knew you could understand he would talk a little bit about the war I and few of us remember he actually respected the German soldiers Looking back I he saw the worst in humanity
My grandfather brought home a couple rare items home, his CO said he could bring anything he could fit in his locker ( he had one of those school looking ones for uniforms and such ) so he brought home a couple uniforms, including a SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer Uniform, good condition aswell, when he fought through France he found it just in a cupboard in a old hotel he was staying at, still has all the medals, belt and gun, I’ve inherited that along with some other items he brought home
@@joshroe thank you! I’ve gotten offers for over 22k for the uniform because it’s heavily decorated, knights cross aswell. He found a Wehrmacht generals uniform but it was stolen by a officer
I recall a vendor at a gunshow in Virginia with many Vietnam combat pictures in a case on display. I was about 13 at the time and the pictures were not pretty. There was a leather bag about the size of a tennis ball in the left corner of the case and I asked him what was in it. He asked me if I really wanted to know, it was a bag full of teeth.

I was at The History Company store on Lafayette Rd in Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga back in 2016. It's just outside the Chickamauga Battle field National Park. I highly recommend stopping past the store and the park.

My uncles brought back German guns . I remember seeing one when I was about 11 . It looked like a Ak 47 and another one looked like a Carbine / AK without the grip .
My grandfather served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe during WWII. He never spoke of his experiences and he threw all his stuff away when he got home. I guess he didn't have a good time or perhaps he was just sick of it.
So many of our combat veterans come home and just want to put the war behind them. Those memories are often too hard to think about so they try to get rid of everything that reminds them of the experience. It's a complicated thing. Thought you meant ghosts...true story here, i bought some old hanyang and gewehr 88s years ago, had some display old turk 8mm mauser rounds on a shelf near em. On Halloween night after midnight i awoke to a tapping that got louder and ended with a thump...turned on the lights, and an 8mm round had fallen...it had been tipping on its own,rocking til it fell next to the rifles on the floor.... explain that one....god only knows with 150 year old military stuff that were used in combat what energy its picked up....where its been, what it witnessed....
My grandfather came back with a Japanese flag, dental container, even silk from the occupation. Along with his bomber jacket, machete, and numerous pictures and all his letters.
As far as American veterans from WW2 bringing back souvenirs - the guys in the rear or in the post war occupation army picked up the best stuff. Infantrymen in combat had no place to put anything while the shooting was going on.
Sadly treasures get sold stolen or damaged because of neglect, indifference or accident. As a collector i wonder what stories are behind the wepons, awards and trinketry ive collected. I have had my own war mementos stolen so know the loss.
The Iron Cross seen here....the vet says that it was taken off a German soldier. BULLSHIT! This is a 2nd Class Iron Cross. Soldiers NEVER wore these. Yes, they wore the 1st Class issues (a pinback) but NOT the 2nd. Besides, the ribbon is the wrong one. The ribbon here is from a "War Merit Cross".
I still have a Nazi armband that my late father picked up at the Bergen-Belsen war crimes trial, but I have absolutely no idea which of the defendants it belonged to.
My Dad was a Sgt in a US Army Combat Engineer Battalion D-Day, Battle Of The Bulge. He brought home a silver panzer badge which I still have. He said that when he was on the boat to return home they announced that any enemy war trophys would be confiscated.There were plenty of items thrown overboard and hitting the water.

During college I wore my dad's 1944 pea coat, I still have my field jacket, etc. I love history and taught for the Navy college on Navy ships around the world. My son is as Navy Commander, and got paid to go to Vanderbilt University. What a great country we have. Vote to keep it
I think the only thing I have is the WHO shot record. It's pretty impressive. My ex searched out all the medals and got new ones. The few things I had got stolen or lost. The boots wore out. We didn't really have much of anything.
I've been telling these stories for about 13 years. It's wild the differences in what some have and others don't. The WWII veteran with the Luger and the Nazi uniform had way more stuff that we weren't able to get into the story. He had old military vehicles. Very impressive collection of items. Then others won't have anything. Not even a DD-214. If they can't show anything, sadly, we really can't do a video. I give them space to tell the stories as they remember and I know there will be exaggerations, etc. and that's fine. Hard to prove either way. I try to dive into the history to make sure the stories line up historically. I've had a few misses over the years with that. I'm my own fact checker, and I can't know everything. But if they can't verify anything that's pretty difficult to make into a story. Thanks for being here with us.
Yep lots of stuff from World War II German Soldiers would trade for a pack of cigarettes. My older friends granddad fought in World War I, and brought home a ton of stuff. lots of rifles, and A gun that my father pickpocketed off a police officer in Italy😂
If a veteran earned a medal during their time in service they can those. They can also get replacements if they've been lost or damaged, etc. Thanks for watching our video!
it's Amazing that people do these things to remember our hero's. I was told by my dad all my childhood that as long as we are remembered we live forever. So our American Heros should live forever unless the Dems and Liberals get their way.
I brought back a bunch of Sumatran artifacts among other things from iraq they said not to but a lot did anyway they only stopped really checking shipments home when an army guy tried shipping a human arm home
Up until Vietnam, you could bring home just about anything except explosives, and a few weapons. Just fill out the form, get it approved by your Company Commander, upon approval, log it with the Logistics personnel and you were good to go!
I talked to a Vietnam Veteran this week who brought back an SKS rifle. He said as long as it wasn't a fully automatic weapon, they just had to go to the provost and fill out some documents. I remember my childhood friend showing me a beautiful, polished black leather holster and belt, with a German wehrmacht eagle and swastika buckle and a nickel-plated P38 pistol in remarkable condition, his father served during the Ardennes offensive. My father brought home a Japanese type 38 rifle, the story was, while his ship , the U.S.S Bennington, was anchored in Tokyo Bay after the end of hostilities, a barge pulled up with pile of rifles and bayonets destined to be dumped in the Bay, the rifle lacks the Chrisanthimum symbol (ground off) and he didn't want to be bothered with the bayonet.

My father was warned to NOT bring any souvenirs back... and he didn't. He also threw away all of his uniforms soon after his discharge in late 1945. He kept some photos, his WD AGO Form 53-55, and his memories.
It's interesting. I've talked to a lot of veterans doing these stories through the years. Some veterans didn't save anything, and some save so much you wonder how they got all of it back home. Thanks for being here on this channel with us!

I have a German Helmet that was brought back I have the biggest part of my life it’s cool But back in middle school in 1974 Mann middle school Abilene Texas we had three teachers that fought in the Second World War they were the real deal too of them fought the Germans and my Texas history teacher fought the Japanese I remember he was a really great man besides a great teacher he had a scare above his right eyebrow he joke about it a couple of years later we found out it was from the war and he never cried about it he was one tough guy and a awesome teacher the P.E teacher was also football coach and math teacher he had the best sense of humor and was there no matter who you were or race he would hear you out then help you any way it took to make you understand what ever you needed We found out he fought in some of the worst battles and Mr coach Voss was also a special education teacher which I needed at the time also fought the Germans he if he knew you could understand he would talk a little bit about the war I and few of us remember he actually respected the German soldiers Looking back I he saw the worst in humanity

My grandfather brought home a couple rare items home, his CO said he could bring anything he could fit in his locker ( he had one of those school looking ones for uniforms and such ) so he brought home a couple uniforms, including a SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer Uniform, good condition aswell, when he fought through France he found it just in a cupboard in a old hotel he was staying at, still has all the medals, belt and gun, I’ve inherited that along with some other items he brought home

@@joshroe thank you! I’ve gotten offers for over 22k for the uniform because it’s heavily decorated, knights cross aswell. He found a Wehrmacht generals uniform but it was stolen by a officer
I recall a vendor at a gunshow in Virginia with many Vietnam combat pictures in a case on display. I was about 13 at the time and the pictures were not pretty. There was a leather bag about the size of a tennis ball in the left corner of the case and I asked him what was in it. He asked me if I really wanted to know, it was a bag full of teeth.
Yikes! I've heard some wild stories over the years, but noone has pulled out a bag of teeth. For this I am grateful. Thanks for being here in this community with us!

I was at The History Company store on Lafayette Rd in Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga back in 2016. It's just outside the Chickamauga Battle field National Park. I highly recommend stopping past the store and the park.

My grandfather served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe during WWII. He never spoke of his experiences and he threw all his stuff away when he got home. I guess he didn't have a good time or perhaps he was just sick of it.
So many of our combat veterans come home and just want to put the war behind them. Those memories are often too hard to think about so they try to get rid of everything that reminds them of the experience. It's a complicated thing. Thought you meant ghosts...true story here, i bought some old hanyang and gewehr 88s years ago, had some display old turk 8mm mauser rounds on a shelf near em. On Halloween night after midnight i awoke to a tapping that got louder and ended with a thump...turned on the lights, and an 8mm round had fallen...it had been tipping on its own,rocking til it fell next to the rifles on the floor.... explain that one....god only knows with 150 year old military stuff that were used in combat what energy its picked up....where its been, what it witnessed....

As far as American veterans from WW2 bringing back souvenirs - the guys in the rear or in the post war occupation army picked up the best stuff. Infantrymen in combat had no place to put anything while the shooting was going on.

Sadly treasures get sold stolen or damaged because of neglect, indifference or accident. As a collector i wonder what stories are behind the wepons, awards and trinketry ive collected. I have had my own war mementos stolen so know the loss.

The Iron Cross seen here....the vet says that it was taken off a German soldier. BULLSHIT! This is a 2nd Class Iron Cross. Soldiers NEVER wore these. Yes, they wore the 1st Class issues (a pinback) but NOT the 2nd. Besides, the ribbon is the wrong one. The ribbon here is from a "War Merit Cross".

My Dad was a Sgt in a US Army Combat Engineer Battalion D-Day, Battle Of The Bulge. He brought home a silver panzer badge which I still have. He said that when he was on the boat to return home they announced that any enemy war trophys would be confiscated.There were plenty of items thrown overboard and hitting the water.

During college I wore my dad's 1944 pea coat, I still have my field jacket, etc. I love history and taught for the Navy college on Navy ships around the world. My son is as Navy Commander, and got paid to go to Vanderbilt University. What a great country we have. Vote to keep it

I think the only thing I have is the WHO shot record. It's pretty impressive. My ex searched out all the medals and got new ones. The few things I had got stolen or lost. The boots wore out. We didn't really have much of anything.
I've been telling these stories for about 13 years. It's wild the differences in what some have and others don't. The WWII veteran with the Luger and the Nazi uniform had way more stuff that we weren't able to get into the story. He had old military vehicles. Very impressive collection of items. Then others won't have anything. Not even a DD-214. If they can't show anything, sadly, we really can't do a video. I give them space to tell the stories as they remember and I know there will be exaggerations, etc. and that's fine. Hard to prove either way. I try to dive into the history to make sure the stories line up historically. I've had a few misses over the years with that. I'm my own fact checker, and I can't know everything. But if they can't verify anything that's pretty difficult to make into a story. Thanks for being here with us.

Yep lots of stuff from World War II German Soldiers would trade for a pack of cigarettes. My older friends granddad fought in World War I, and brought home a ton of stuff. lots of rifles, and A gun that my father pickpocketed off a police officer in Italy😂

it's Amazing that people do these things to remember our hero's. I was told by my dad all my childhood that as long as we are remembered we live forever. So our American Heros should live forever unless the Dems and Liberals get their way.

I brought back a bunch of Sumatran artifacts among other things from iraq they said not to but a lot did anyway they only stopped really checking shipments home when an army guy tried shipping a human arm home

Up until Vietnam, you could bring home just about anything except explosives, and a few weapons. Just fill out the form, get it approved by your Company Commander, upon approval, log it with the Logistics personnel and you were good to go!
I talked to a Vietnam Veteran this week who brought back an SKS rifle. He said as long as it wasn't a fully automatic weapon, they just had to go to the provost and fill out some documents.
