This crash was a nation tragedy. I was around 1 when the crash occurred, I watched the aci episode when I was 3rd or 4th grade, after I grown up that I realized how this accident not only impacted Taiwan's aviation safety but politic situations between the strait. Back in 1990's and early 2000's, Taiwanese government starts to let people travel to mainland China to visit Relatives that have been left behind after the China civil war. But back then, If Taiwanese people wants to enter Mainland China, they have to fly to Hong Kong first and take other flights into mainland due to political sanctions (no direct flights between mainland China and Taiwan). This crash changed everything and few years later, path for direct flights between mainland China and Taiwan finally opened. My dad, who worked in a semiconductor company around that time said that after the crash, most companies(especially those having branches in mainland China) were hesitant to send their employees on business trips to mainland China. Right now I'm study aerospace engineering in college, and one of my professors was former 747 instructor pilot who worked for China airlines during this period, and one of his close colleagues passed away as one of the flight crews. RIP to those souls onboard flight 611.
I remember this accident too; I was living in Taiwan and about 11 at the time. China Airlines 611 and Singapore Airlines 006 were both national tragedies and changed aviation in the country.
Thanks for writing this, it adds a lot to this video, I know about current China/Taiwan relations but not the history which I've always wondered about and thanks to you I'm finally going to look up! :)
fun fact??: this plane incident was originally thought to be caused by the same thing that brought down TWA Flight 800. then, 13 years later. Metrojet Flight 9268 was bombed over Egypt. and coincidentally that plane had a tailstrike as well. so they thought that had the same cause as this.
I'm a (relatively) longtime viewer and I think this may be one of your strongest deliveries yet. Your narration was excellent throughout, and despite having already learned of this incident, I found myself gripped by how strong the narrative of the video was. Excellent work this week as always, Chloe!
Also a fact at the time the 747-200B involved was the last and only remaining passenger 747-200 on china airlines fleet as the other 3 were converted into freighters . Flight 611 was originally supposed to be served with a 747-400 or A300-600 but was unavailable at the time and the only aircraft available is the 747-200B. It was planned after completing flight 611 the 747-200B would be retired from china airlines and sold/ delivered to orient Thai airways
And as of the 25th of July 2022, 20 years and two months to the day of the crash, China Airlines Flight 611 remains the most recent fatal accident, attack or incident to involve a passenger variant of a B747.
I flew China Airlines 4 times in 2001, including a flight from BKK to AMS on the 12th September.. the day after "9/11". As a then nervous flyer I cant say I was completely at ease, not because of 9/11 as I realised security would be top notch after such an event, but because of the airline's safety record. To think this happened the following year :(
Yes that HK airport was notorious. The airport had to buy properties in the approach ways, and then sell them with deed restrictions, otherwise they would have had high rise buildings built in the approach way. My father flew in there a few times as passenger in the cockpit, and you were flying lower than the buildings, with people hanging washing above you as you were landing.
My friend’s friend was on this plane that day. My friend drove his friend to the airport and he will never see his friend again. Although the China airlines is better recently, we will never get on this airline in our lives.
This plane of China airlines lasted 22 but the JAL was 7 years, it disappeared after being disintegrated. However , JA8119 had improper bulkhead repair and the China Air Plane had it's damage covered up
@@farhanatashiga3721 Yeah, but what he/she meant was both different flights/different 747’s/different stories/what ever it is, shared the same factors: tailstrike & shoddy repair done by the maintenance personnel.
I remember someone in a comment section saying that the accident plane (B-18255) was actually sold to Thai Oriental Airways and flight 611 would’ve been its last flight with China Airlines. Edit: it said that China Airlines retired most of their 747-200s by 1999, so the accident plane was the one & only 747-200 that the airline operated once the others left the fleet. It stayed from 1999-2002.
This flight should be operated by a 747-400 on that fateful day, but due to some reasons, that 747-400 was moved to other flights, and B-18255 was pulled in as a substitute for flight 611. B-18255 was scheduled for a major inspection after this flight. what's more interesting about this plane is its unusual economy class seats configuration, it only got 9 seats per row instead of 10 seats per row (3-4-2 instead of the normal 3-4-3)
I watched a documentary about this flight on the show called Mayday, it was pretty cool but I like your videos more because they're quicker and they get straight to the point
It's also worth mentioning Japan Air Lines Flight 123, which also crashed years after a tail strike. This was a Boeing 747SR which suffered a tail strike on landing in 1978, also repaired incorrectly (how badly they "fixed" it is stunning). 7 years later in 1985, this damage eventually led to the failure of the rear bulkhead and the sudden decompression of the cabin with large pieces of the tail breaking off. -All- 520 of the 524 people on board lost their lives that day.
Happy Belated Birthday, Chloe! Well done on this video. I as looking forward to it for quite some time. With what a horrible job was done during the repair, it's baffling to me how: a) the plane lasted so long, and b) the maintenance crew got away with it for so long.
It was unfortunate that the crew could do nothing to stop the crack. I believe they would have felt like a normal flight and then, all of them getting either sucked out or incapacitated. Also happy belated birthday! 🎉
Wow, 21 years later, 2023, it is still devastating to hear about this accident. Probably very unforgettable for the families about the incident. What a tragic thing to happen.
It’s a very weird detail to me because we do a pressurization test at every A check (300 or so flight hours) if it really was leaking cigarette smoke at a high enough rate to stain the airplane it definitely should have manifested as a leak every time it was tested. On the other hand I also work in a completely different time period where structural damage like that requires an expensive engineering repair scheme from the manufacturer, so who knows.
"The pilots received their last instructions from controllers at 15:16" and then I looked at my clock and it said the same thing. Coincidence freaked me out for a second XD

The fact that the 747 spent her life on the short Taipei to Hong Kong route meant that she did a lot of flight cycles. Had she been on less frequent medium to long haul routes, this may not have happened at all. Still...... had she been repaired properly, she would still be flying and those on board would still be alive today.
The fact that that area was streaked with smoke if a myth. When two pieces of aluminum rub together or fret on as n aircraft it looks like smoke. Wow this is really crazy. It is unbelievable how long it took for the metal fatigue to finally rip the plane apart!!
