Hunt down sharks to protect surfers? The dilemma facing France's Reunion Island

- It is a sobering statistic: eleven deaths at sea in ten years. Along the coastline of France's Reunion Island, surfers, but also swimmers, are regularly attacked and sometimes killed by sharks. For the island paradise, it's a problem that's causing major concern for the surfing community and the tourism sector. Our reporters Clovis Casali and Julien Sauvaget went to the French overseas department in the Indian Ocean to find out what's being done to shake off its "Shark Island" image.

I grew up near the beach and spent a lot of time there. Leave the sharks alone, they were there first. Besides, they've got enough troubles with finning and what-not.
This is the sharks home and hunting ground, you are a guest.Don't like the risk or consequences, don't swim there. We need our predators to keep the ocean healthy.Ignorance at it's finest.
Ignorance is not admitting that there has been an unnatural change to natural processes. This isn't happening because the sharks were here first and we suddenly started entering their habitat; there has been an explosion of bulls around Reunion--BIG bulls. When they figure out that situation and address it, you can go back to your general platitudes applying.

Says this while living in an area where dangerous and apex predators have been pushed out. Pure ignorance🤡🌍
Thank you for speaking out the truth

years ago I wondered if sewage was the cause ,,,,,so fix the sewage problem and see what happens . many comments here seem to blank out the fact that the economy is dependent on tourism
It is the marine sanctuary . Without local fisherman controlling the population sharks multiplied very quickly and the attacks started soon after
ppl have swimming pools and lakes - sharks have the oceans - they have been attacked for the fins , by boats , oil , fishing nets .., cocaine drops , plastic waste and.....
what do you expect to happen after all this time ?...ppl have destroyed a whole lot for them !
Why swim in a place where you know there are sharks?
They and many around the world swim with sharks daily with no issues. This started happening when woke "scientists' introduced fishing bans. Very likely there was an over fishing problem that provoked this response, but history shows it was clearly not the correct one. Balance is key.
@@jackjman5577 It wasn't overfishing, 100 people died in Africa from eating a shark with toxins. So Reunion brilliantly decides to ban fishing all together. The attacks quickly followed...

Tigers and bulls. Mean neighbors in the waves.
Good waves down there, great coffee too. Sharkey? Yes!
Pull the French out of Reunion and give the land BACK to the locals! Problem solved!
Put shark nets , they work - check out the track record of Natal Sharks Board , not one attack on any of their protected beaches in about 50 years .
I am impressed & amazed by ... a shark hunter who spent 45 minutes of First Aid to rescue a fish accidentally caught by his shark fishing line. The French are truly enlightened people!
Enlightened fish food
We enter into their home we as are own homes we are Intruders of the life of the oceans and Lakes!
Dont be sharkist, leave them. Also french language, utter rubbish sound
We have our own language in reunion island is creole
