Glad you finally made it here! Just few years ago you couldn't even see this place from the road it was so overgrown. By the way - the little farmhouse on the hill across the road, I could TOTALLY live there! Always loved that area.
Love me the old iron furnaces. Hardscrabble, but rewarding life for the true artisans of pre-Industrial Revolution times. Thank you for keeping our curiosity satiated, and our awareness piqued good sir. Much respect and appreciation. 🙏😊
Never heard of this place before.
My family came from and in around Dornsife, Sheridan, Orwin, Muir, and Williamstown. Did lots of hiking around High Rocks and Old Goldmine Road. We also spent lots of time in Cold Springs. Love following you as it reminds me so much of my youth! Great Family Time!
They made the fence so short, very tempting to go over it.
There's all kinds of these in the woods around here in swva, plus shot towers, there's two setting right next to the new River in my area, probably more I'm not sure, but all the structures look old old like European old

Hi Cliff, what a lovely site, it looks like they are doing all they can to preserve it. I wonder if the cannon were hidden in the pool of water when it was there ? maybe they intended to go back for them but never got around to it after the war ended ?. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

Just up the hill over that bridge you spotted in the distance is one of the oldest/largest oak trees in the state (planted by Anna Nutt as well). It's sorta hidden off to the left as you go up the hill, but you can get pretty close to it if you walk across the field a little ways. It doesn't immediately appear to be anything special until you get a bit closer and are able to really see the age
That sucks you couldn't get right up to the furnace.
Maybe someday it will be safe. Maybe someone working project will invite Cliff back so they can get a before and after videos.
I have an off topic question, Cliff. Why did our ancestors build fences in a zig zag pattern. I enjoy seeing those beautiful old fences.
Split-rail fences
This was a simple way to build a fence because no digging was required for post holes.
How did they know that there cannons were buried in the area ?
Buried in 1777 to hide them from the British. People theorized that they weren't needed when the French joined the war.
Dug up 7 in 1875
Dug up 5 in 1895
Someone decided to perform a geophysical surveys that detected magnetic anomalies indicating the presence of large iron objects.
4 Dug up in Spring of 2022.
7 foot long weighing 4500 pounds. Capable of 18 pound cannon balls.
2 of the cannons had were "loaded". The ball was stuck in one, and ball rolled out of the other.
From a picture, the site was on other side of road. A barn with silos is in the background.
