Hi, just watched this video. I've been playing drums and percussion in different Churches for over 30 years, done some studio recording and taught drums. Your teaching on dynamics, building and transitions is excellent, and will be very helpful for Church drummers of all experience levels.
Here are some real-world church drumming tips: 1. Play to the room - This is not a rock concert. This is a worship service. If your snare is causing people's ears to ring, or your cymbals are causing people's ears to bleed, you're playing way too loud. 2. Less is more - So you think you are playing to the song? Ha! Be prepared to play less. 3. Know the song, in your sleep - You WILL play single sections of a song you just learned, over and over again, for 40 minutes, during an extended time of worship. So don't screw up.
Disagree. pushing and pulling the beat and introducing polyrythms into your accents will make a really generic 4-on-the-floor CCM tune actually move the crowd. And the glass case of emotion and everything being DI'd ruins the whole "live music" vibe. If no stage volume and a squeaky clean package is what you're after, may as well put on the track and sing along. That said, getting away from the whole 3rd Day, Caedemon's Call, and David Crowder Band thing and heading back into Gospel and hymns is the way to go. If it's boring to play, the audience is probably bored, too.
Hi! My name is Austin and I just wanted to say that thanks for the advice! As an 11 year old drummer, I am the main drummer at my church! It is and will be one of the best experiences of my life.
I am a beginner drummer and have been playing in church since 2014. I watch a lot of drum covers. I have been blessed to learn by ear. However, I can use all the lessons available. Thanks so much for being gracious enough to give of your time and to share your gifts and talents with the world🤗. YOU ROCK✌🤘✊!
This video was great as a church drummer it really helped me a lot I've been using the same beats not really knowing what I'm doing but this explains it a lot for me thanks!!
Last Sunday, I was building the song during the bridge, getting all the dynamics going nuts, and right at that moment where I lead into the chorus....I missed the cymbal hit. Another big tip when being a church drummer is to let mistakes slide lol.
Great video once again. Another tip for dynamics is to play a light cross stick on the snare during the first verse. Transition to a normal snare hit on the second verse.
hey gabe ! i really just want you to know something. i just bought 3 months ago a drum kit and then i found your channel . my mom said that the drum teachers are too expensive in where i live . so i started watching you and you became my drym teacher :) i got alot better from your videos thank you so much ! i tryed learning how to play drums from so many people and i only got better from you ! thanks ! by the way can you please make another rock beats video ? thank you !
Hey I am 14 of age and I am from Jamaica. I have been playing for 4 years and I have improved but I still need to know more skill . I did not mention that I have never been to a drum class . Yeap it started with my pastor, he was sharing on a Sunday when he felt lead to give me the stick. So I took it went around it started to play as if I have been playing for a long while. As I said I am in Jamaica but since I have been playing I had watch people from different countries come watch me play. I know that this a gift because there is no way a boy is going to play a drum without taking class but for me I did not.......
When someone tells the drummer to "play with more dynamics" in church, that is code for you to play softer. They are just trying to be nice about it. I've NEVER had someone want me to play louder, and I've been doing this for over 20 years. On an unrelated note, can I have your ride cymbal? Not the cracked one though. The other one. Thanks.
Martin Moore bruh lucky you.... In my church I'm basically being told to play louder even though I don't think I'm capable of it.... Performance fright.... I'm looking up lessons to help me
average_14 that is my case also. I cant get enough confidence to play louder. One thing that has helped me though is, not looking at the congregation. If you look at the congregation it feels like they are all glaring at you. XD
Oh wow I'm always getting told to play louder. Idk my ears hurt when I play too loud but I think I passed that part but I'm just too used to playing soft.
you are awesome !!!! my brother is just a beginner .... n he loves the way you teach... you are crispe and clear in your explanation... Thnx a lot for these amazing videos... it's been very helpful... God Bless!!!! 😊
dude this is so helpfull. i was the dumbest drummer in my church and now i'm the trainer there. i did all of this before i watched this and i can show this to my students. back then i can't explain this to them but this will help a lot ps: i did exactly what you did in the dynamics in the closed hh verse, rc chorus, etc lol
Gabe, great lesson as always, I would like to add that is really important to keep it simple, grooves, fills, chops, everything, church drumming is about creating a path so the audience can achieve a conection with God not to show off our skills, so playing a gospel chop in 32nd notes one bar long can be not so good, you need to make it simple so the people can make this conection and the rest of the band love that type of playing. Hope I did not commit a lot of mistakes in there and make my point clear, my english is not the best, lol. Bro, great lesson again, and greetings.
Yo, you should change the name of this video to "How To Be A Good Percussionist" because these are the building blocks of being a musician, I'm not religious in any way note have I ever gone to church and these are very important concepts to all types of musicianship, great video.
I think you misunderstood what he said. He meant to say these tipps apply to drumming/percussion(whatever) ingeneral not just drumming/percussion in church.
Hi gabe am from Miami Florida and an a church drummer and am really thankful for you becases am learning dynamics with you and I I have a busy life that I can't take drum lesson like I use to I was in band that's what got in to it when can you make a video about gospels chips or fills or how to play by ear thanks man
Joshua Flores Hey Joshua, I'm so glad that I can help you become a better drummer! I'll definitely be making more videos like that, thanks for the suggestions!
thanks so much. for learn this one. be honestly i can't believe how others teachers on line about the drumer. don't speak or learn this categorie. God Bless you.
Awesome Video! Nice job reaching 5,000 Subscribers. You deserve it! : D I'm not a church drummer but this video rally helped and broke down into a lot of awesome details! Keep up the awesome work Gabe! And quick question if you get the chance to answer. I have your Ultimate Beginner Drum Lessons Pack and its amazing, I was just curious on if here will be more added to it ever or maybe even a more Advanced Pack for the future ?
TimMorrisTV Thanks so much for the support Tim! I'm so glad that you are enjoying "Ultimate Beginner Drum Lessons." There is in fact a brand new lesson course hitting my website in about a month (hopefully) and that will definitely be more geared for intermediate players.
How to tell your drummer to practice the songs and exercise and learn to accept feedbacks? I play electric guitar at church and I always pulling the drums on every song rather than the drums driving it I can't strum any louder or do a lot of licks to put more energy to a song .
Dynamics are really hard to teach. Ya kinda have them, or you don't. I find playing as close to the original, if possible, suits most all worship today. I tell what is hard, is listening to someone who has zero dynamics. Especially when you're a drummer. Good lesson. Great for beginners.
can you do me a favour bro that when you teach a certain drum fill [or any kind of a fill] or like the one you did then you play a rock beat or any beat showing us how u can apply that fill to it thank you
by the way, this is what iam doing everytime because i dont have enough skills on drums i could not play nor copy the drumming on the cd's and i don't have enough time to listen into a song, so i am just doing that "3 ways". I also want to teach all my churchmates who has a desire to play drums but i don't know how to explain whats on my mind, i am doing this 3 ways but iam not aware of their terms which is "dynamics" "building" and "transition" and then after i watched your video i understand it all,and now i am so excited to share this to them. Thank you so much. God bless.
CAN WE GIVE THESE MAN A ROUND OF APPLUASE🙏🙏 AND CAN WE ALL SUSCRIBE TO THESE MAN CHANNEL UNTIL HE REACH A MILLION FOLLOWERS ,BECUASE THAT THE ONLY WAY WE CAN SAY THANK YOU FOR TAKING HIS TIME TO TEACH US THESE DRUM TECHNIQUES

Drummer: ".. I can't play any louder."
Hahaha amazing
😂😂😂😂
Last Sunday, I was building the song during the bridge, getting all the dynamics going nuts, and right at that moment where I lead into the chorus....I missed the cymbal hit. Another big tip when being a church drummer is to let mistakes slide lol.

average _14 just let the Holy Spirit guide the feel of the way you play. Remember when you play in church you play for God not people :)
So all this talk is ' listen to the song
Oh wow I'm always getting told to play louder. Idk my ears hurt when I play too loud but I think I passed that part but I'm just too used to playing soft.

Percussion is basically everything you hi twelfth a stick xD
+eon star everything you hit with a stick, gosh I hate typing on a phone
eon star That's generally correct but it has many more complications when it comes to playing certain types of music.
