  • Is reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia what most people think it is? This short thought provoking talk by Dr Penny Taylor reflects on this important question.
Penny is a Baha'i who grew up in Tasmania on Palawa country, has worked in women and children's human rights throughout the pacific, as a community solicitor in Darwin on Larrakia country, and for several years at the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation leading their research division. She has a PhD focussed on reconciliation and race-relations in Australia. She now resides in Sydney and works for Reconciliation Australia in their Community Truth Telling program.
In her talk, Penny recommends every Australia read the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and you can do so at: ulurustatement.org/the-statem...

Dont believe everything you hear. The prime minister said sorry already, they act like its not taught in school but we learned all about the history in school in the 80s and 90s. Aboriginal people get free education university and many other incentives. And why call it first nations its not like they were united, why did they make weapons, because they went to war with each other, should certain tribes give back the land they took from other tribes? The first people from England were convicts they didnt even want to go there, they were forced against their will and the convicts definately didnt go there to make genocide.

Unity, in Diversity, is the Key to reconciliation. Restitution for past injustices, & horrific crimes against humanity, require a justice, often going above & well beyond mere physical, monetary, & land restoration, & these often times require a leveling of, or equalizing the playing field.

It is not my sense that my view is only one of many that I find difficult to see or appreciate; it is my sense that, because of my race, my opinion or view is worse less than all others, that I find difficult to see or appreciate.

It is absolutely mathematically certain that every single person living in Australia today is descended from a First Nation Australian. The genetic isopoint guarantees that to be true.
