AutoCAD Tutorial: How to Create a Linetype
In this video I go over how to create a custom line type in autocad by using the make linetype command in the express tools ribbon panel. I go over making a new basic linetype as well as a more custom one using shapes and the shapefile tool as well.

To answer why the linetype finishes short and starts after the origin point:
Do exactly as Brandon has described however, when making the linetype, have the line first and the shape to the right of it. Make the origin point the start of the line, not offset to the left of the line. Then have the end of the linetype offset to the right of the shape!

Great tutorial. Thanks. One question though. On your Sanitary linetype, the line did not fill to the end of the line. I have this same problem. How do I fix it so that it extends all the way to the endpoints?

Brandon, Thanks for the video....but I have a question. Why the text of the linetype I've created shows up lower and not centered to the line. What I'm missing??

I'm trying to create a wavy line which is basically constructed of shallow arcs all touching each other to make a continuous wavy line. Following all the procedures you demonstrated on creating a line it doesn't produce a wavy line. So I tried making a shape using an arc. I copy the same arc to the end of the first but mirror it so its facing the opposite direction then I join them and go thru the same MKLTYPE procedure. I just don't get the wavy line in the end. Can you suggest something I can try to make this happen correctly?

Thank you very much! I would like to know if it is possible to make a custom linetype with other than the default colour? When I make a linetype and change the colour nothing happens, it remains black in the end. I would like to make a linetype with more than one colour in it (so in this case it's not an option to make a layer with the colour I want it to be and put it on that layer).

    hello folk,
    thanks for the job BUT...
As many of others tuto makers, you say that after creating a shape, erase the line of creation, and call the "SHAPE" command in the command line to insert the nex crated shape in the pazttern to go on with the typeline creating process, that's right???
The point is, anytime i write SHAPE in my command line, it just open again the record window of shape cration....
    I did it 100 times...
    1) draw polylines..2) MAKESHAPE in the tools menu of express tool, and record trough the window that open by itself trough the process, giving a name etc, etc.... then 3) delete the line of creation on the sceen just like you do, and write SHAPE on th command line (to call the new shape on the screen), and here comes the trouble, no choice purposal like on your screen "enter shape name or?" but instead the shape recording window open again, on & on & on...
Could you help me please ????

I get an error when I try to create a line type. It says bad definition at line 2 of file. Comma expected after text string. Line type creation failed.
I've been at this all day and it's driving me crazy. I followed all the steps exactly. I'm using Autocad 2012
