My pops (RIP) bought our 800sqft starter home for in a sleepy Seattle neighborhood in 1977 for $30k, remodelled the downstairs garage to put in a master bed/bath mostly by himself, built a rockwall in the backyard and wooden deck in the front himself. He and my mother had it paid off within 15yrs. I checked zillow earlier this year and the estimated price is 1.2mil. And that's not even a brag; there's no way that house, quaint and great as it is, should cost 22x the avg income. Especially considering when my dad bought it, it was less than 1.5x his income. Even though he upgraded to 1200sqft and I got to watch the controlled demolition of the Kingdome as a teen from my front porch, that's still fairly tight for a 4 person family. Its just absurd. I moved out if Seattle after college because of a variety of factors, cost of living being 1. Within 3 years my corporate job had moved me to Boise and in 2010 on essentially a starting salary I bought an 1800sqft, 15 yo home 1/2 mile from the mall with a stable of horses behind me who always came over to say hi and the mortgage was $890/mo. FJB. And Boise might be the most underrated city in America. The city itself is actually more populated than St Louis and the metro area including Nampa Caldwell and Ontario, OR has around 700k people.
As a mom- with a son in high school and two elementary kids- one will be able to be drafted in her four years- and she has shown she can’t help with world tensions and makes them worse- 10,000 soldiers from North Korea just went to Russia this week! As a mom- my vote is for my kids health, safety, education and my ability to be able to provide for them.
