Great, great ranking video! Enjoyed it very much! I grew up in Sweden in the 80’s and Maiden was my band. Powerslave was my first Iron Maiden record and it’s still my favorite album by them, as is the sleeve artwork. Just fantastic art by Derek Riggs. Somewhere In Time was always my close second favorite artwork, but I absolutely understand why you picked Killers as number 2. It’s such an iconic, instantly recognizable album artwork. Just classic! It’s almost as classic as The Trooper! Here’s my ranking of the studio album artworks, and my Top 10 single artworks by Maiden: Albums: 1 - Powerslave 2 - Somewhere In Time 3 - The Number Of The Beast 4 - Killers 5 - Piece Of Mind 6 - Seventh Son… 7 - Iron Maiden 8 - Fear Of The Dark 9 - Brave New World 10 - The Final Frontier 11 - A Matter Of Life And Death 12 - Senjutsu 13 - No Prayer For The Dying 14 - Dance Of Death 15 - The X Factor 16 - Virtual 11 17 - The Book Of Souls Singles: 1 - 2 Minutes To Midnight 2 - Twilight Zone 3 - The Trooper 4 - Stranger In A Strange Land 5 - Purgatory 6 - Run To The Hills (live’85) / Phantom Of The Opera (live’84) 7 - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter (12” single artwork) 8 - Run To The Hills 9 - Flight Of Icarus 10 - Sanctuary
Really enjoyed this review, Jim, thanks. Interesting side note about Virtual IX with the mock football team. As you know, some of the band members are huge West Ham United fans with a reference on the SiT cover and their logo on Steve’s guitar! Speaking of SiT, it’s definitely my favourite IM album cover. I proudly had it as a poster over my bed growing up, which my Mum wasn’t too happy about!
@@JimNewstead Hahaha... i know my brother!!! I just had to point it out as a Greek citizen!! If you want to talk about the song "Alexander the Great" from the album Somewhere in Time, ok it's 100% inspired from the Ancient Greece! 😁
I really would have bet on Killers being your top choice. The big surprise for me though was how low you ranked No Prayer for the Dying. I always rather liked that one. Your critique is accurate though.
Gonna have a quick go before hearing yours Jim ... 1 Somewhere In Time (bit of bonus its also joint fave album but the artwork is just so full of great stuff) 2 Seventh Son (the image is so magical and suots album brilliantly) 3 Book of Souls (middle top album for me but when saw this cover first time i goose bumped) 4 Senjutsu (I think it's the most purposeful in terms of story but that style of black background along with Book of Souls kicks arse) 5 Number of The Beast (could be my no1 tomorrow - yeah its amazing and most loved cover...but if i think iron maiden i see SITime first in my noggins 🤪) Others in contention 6 Run to the Hills singles cover (grew up seeing this everywhere!) 7 Fear of The Dark 8 Piece of Mind 9 Killers 10 Brave New World (Iike it's subtle feel compared to others)
OMG.... the fear of the dark!!! There's a tree in my neighborhood with a huge Knott and 2 perfect branches growing. It looks like a baphomet head.... 😮 I love informing the uninformed bout the trees' resemblance, never forgetting the exact moment I first seen that tree, gawking in awe, I can only descride as wooden bapomet obelisk!! Not the great cover but pleasantly triggering 😮
I like rankings and I do many, but I never did one of album covers ... somehow I feel like, I couldn't do it. But one thing is for sure, the covers of the first albums were the best, of the newer ones I like Brave New World best.
Great vid Jim! Didnt know Terry (huge fan) was involved with Dance of Death....yeah that cover isnt great. Surprised you dont rate Book of Souls art much but i get your points. I thought it created excitement for me....loved that it was eddie but unexpected and distinctive in good way ... The debut cover i found a bit annoying growing up for no rational reason. It is the original but i think the feel of it bit dated. Think Killers Eddie was a much needed better design in comparison for me. I like Powerslave cover very much... My no.10 IM album cover for sure.
My #1 is power slave, incorporated with an ideology almost bigger than planet earth itself, majestic, respect & fear, tested by time, stripped down.... #2 Number of the beast.... c'mon, metal's ultimate front man, the devil.... simple, powerful commentary, puppets on a string, falling souls, even a child could decipher.... much like power slave u get lost in thought, who are the fallen, the pit they fall.... puppet master eddie concept as natural the sad clown!!!
The Killers album is my favorite by far. The certain haunting atmosphere is perfectly drawn. My attention always goes to the person sneeking through the curtains, carefully checking what's going on.
Absolutely it's Egyptian. What a ridiculous slip of the tongue!!! I guess that Greek and Egyptian cultures are close... the Greeks were fascinated by Egypt and the culture and adopted much of it into its own Greek culture, so much so that the gods are interchangeable and the legends and myths are similar. I absolutely meant Egypt and NOT Greece! Sorry 😬

My husband went to school with Derek Riggs, who created Eddie the Head and the art around him. Says he was an amazing artist even then!
That's a great story to tell! I bet he was amazing back then. Wow!

Hugh Syme did most of the album artworks for Rush. That would be another great list to do.
Did he now! Interesting :)
36:03 The "Powerslave" cover artwork is notable and inspired from the Ancient Egypt and not from Greek mythology.
I know…. Unfortunately I can’t undo the video, I absolutely meant Egyptian!!!

Haven't watched yet, but it's gotta be Somewhere in Time for me.

@@MaraxisArcanist Haha, good to keep you guessing! It was so nearly Killers... up till the moment I picked up the record!!!!
That's so lovely deep explain. I have bookmark this video cos long one. I need watch on my big TV
Certainly Killers for me!

5 Number of The Beast (could be my no1 tomorrow - yeah its amazing and most loved cover...but if i think iron maiden i see SITime first in my noggins 🤪)
Others in contention
6 Run to the Hills singles cover (grew up seeing this everywhere!)
7 Fear of The Dark
8 Piece of Mind
9 Killers
10 Brave New World (Iike it's subtle feel compared to others)
Great list - they're all fine covers, and I guess it's down to personal taste at the end of the day!

David. David Pratchett!
@@JimNewstead 🥴😅ooooooooops. Though weirdly the Death on the cover is reaaaally like the Death in Terry's wonderful Discworld🤷🏼♀️ my bad lol
As a long time follower, my choice would have to be the Senjutsu cover. The album itself is just classic I.M. and takes you on a journey throughout..
Virtual XI.... Imagine Anvil hockey vs Iron Madien soccer... 😮
My favorite maiden art is live after death
My first choice of cover of an iron maiden album is seventh son of a seventh son
It is a very fine record cover.

not putting Dance of Death at the bottom is just wrong
