When a movie that was shot in 3D needs to be converted to 2D, do they just choose one of the footage or is there a more complex process?

I worked with quite a few beamsplitter rigs when 3D saw it's last resurgence. Mainly 3Ality Technica & Stereotech. The only time I'd ever adjust a camera's depth into the mirror box would when first mounting the cameras onto the rig. The mirror can be used to match the front diameter of your lenses, which should mean your distances are matched. To control Interocular distance in the case of the 3Ality Technica rig an integrated motor box built into the rig would horizontally move the through "Right eye" camera. The Stereotech moves both left & right eye cameras horizontally in opposite directions using a set of motors driven by the Cmotion Camin MDR box in your video.
Great video though. All your gear is spot on.

I was an early adopter of 3D for gaming and movie viewing. I still cannot understand the criticisms offered by those who rejected it. I can only think they did not properly experience it. I was greatly put out when Nvidia suddenly discontinued support for its 3D Vision technology without offering any compensation to those of us who had invested into it, buying their hardware, glasses and gpu, getting a proper television and acquiring 3D versions of films. Bad move, Nvidia!

I enjoyed Hobbit in 48 FPS 3D because I sat dead center in a very high end IMAX screen but the issue is very few screens can properly show off 3D along with the issue of most seating will detract from the proper viewing of 3D for obvious reasons.

There’s a lot of cool stuff that used 3D, but as a home viewing thing I get why most people wouldn’t wanna invest in everything required for the setup. Remember, Blu rays were still not being widely adopted the way we widely adopted DVD, so telling people you needed a 3D Blu ray player was alone enough of a big deal to the naysayers. It does really suck that nothing does 3D now. The PS5 dropped support for 3D Blu rays, so the PSVR2 can’t do 3D playback the way the first PSVR did. It’s a completely obsolete format, not even allowed a true revival after Way of Water. Shame

A properly and thoughtfully designed and shot 3D film is the greatest cinematic joy to watch.
But there are so few films that utilise 3D to advance the art. Hugo and Into the Spiderverse are 2 of my favs. It's for this reason I hope my 3D Plasma TV lasts forever!
Also 9:35 got the wrong film credit, but it's these little gaffs that make us smile 😃

I wish more films were shot in 3d. Not converted to 3d; SHOT in 3d. Nothing beats the imersion of watching the first Avatar on imax 3d.

Thanks for putting the film titles on screen, instead of in the end credits.

Hey Gray! I’m an enormous fan of your content and I mean this in the best way but I think you may be going a bit overboard with the large undulations in vocal pitch. It sounds a bit hammy to me, and I find your earlier (perhaps slightly stilted) VO much easier to listen to.
But no matter what keep making great content!

1:57 So 3D video is essentially the same effect as when you play the same sound from the 2 speakers (left and right) but you put a slight delay(between 12-40 milli-seconds) on one of the sound signals/speakers; the human brain experiences the sound as though it is wider(having more stereo width)🤔...
The audio guys will probably understand what l'm getting at.

The idea is to recreate seeing the world with two eyes instead of one. To achieve this it is needed to show one unique image to each eye instead of the same one to both, however with stereo sound it is impossible to ensure each ear only hears one channel without headphones and that is the reason why surround sound exists so that you can experience the direction of the sound as well without headphones.

When 3D is done right, it's the most immersive experience you'll have watching a movie. I have a 3D projector and still enjoy my 3D bluray discs that I've collected. I saw Aronofsky's short film at the SPHERE in Vegas, and 3D would look amazing on that giant screen!

Blasphamy! No mention or clips from DREDD! AKA, the greatest 3D movie ever made! The small handheld 3D camera they cobbled together is really cool!

3DTVs died off just before 4K TVs came. Bad timing. Only a handful of models were both. They existed for about a year or two, and then everything stopped. Most only saw terrible versions of 3DTVs and even the act of putting on a pair of 3D glasses at home after work was too much friction for the couch consumer.
Lightfield displays and cameras are coming to change things. I decided to build a 12K 180 curved 3D theater while we wait.

I think passive 3d glasses are good as they do halve resolution, but keep the refreshrate and are cheap.

@Loanshark753 Passive actually use the full resolution. It's instead based off of polarizing the light.

    3D cinema is unnecessary
While watching 3D cinema it's really distracting while wearing the glasses
    Never liked 3D cinema
Felt like it is really overrated
