This is my first attempt at a short film/movie. Many thanks to the Bass Hang crew, Howard Ulyate, Nick Galaura, and Doug Koeppen.
This is a great example of a vintage 1976 Jazz Bass.
This is meant to be a longer type of review/short film.
All audio/studio examples were recorded with a REDDI DI, Logic Audio, and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface. Live music recorded with a Canon Vixia HF S-20, Sennheiser MKE 400, Demeter VTBP 201 preamp, QSC Powerlight 1.8, and an Aguilar GS-112.

I started playing guitar about 1974 and then, when my older brother staRted a band, I bought a cheap no name brand and became the bass player. In 1976, because I stuck with it, my dad bought me a new Fender Jazz bass. Exactly like in this video. It is extremely heavy and the neck is a little longer, I think, than most Jazz basses. Still have it. Put a lot of wear & tear on it. Paint is worn off at top where your right arm lays over and there's almost a hole right above the strings from where my thumb rested. A lot of playing and enjoyment!

It's so much fun to see that there are people around that might be even crazier about bass guitars than I am. Love to see your videos and (haha) dig the sound of your external mic. Keep up the good work!

The 3-Bolt neck with micro tilt was a Forrest White innovation designed specifically to improve the efficiency of the final assembly of the instruments. It was not intended for people to be tweaking constantly as the neck to body angle is a stable factor once routed and finished. With the 3-Bolt, instead of shimming with wood or picks, any adjustment needed in final setup could be done by the workers with a couple of screwdrivers in a fraction of the time it took to remove the neck, fit a shim, and reassemble ... especially since most times it required more than one attempt per instrument. Forrest was just as much a genius as Leo was, and when he jumped ship to join forces with Mr. Fender at Music Man, they gave birth to yet another classic bass design: The Music Man StingRay. Also, by the way, with the 3-Bolt neck joint.

@Fsmomma Thanks for checking out the video. I believe all the J basses were strung with DR's, but not too sure if they were all the same type or how old the strings were. I will tell you this, the strings on the '76 were definitely not new and had a lot of wear, but you couldn't tell, the bass made them sound soooo good and they actually sounded as if they were relatively new.

this bass sounds like a 76.. the production from 76 to 79 was particularly amazing, or at least thats how i feel. i've tried three 1977 fenders.. 2 jazz basses and 1 pbass.. they all perform consistently and the built is amazing.. whilst when i tried older models they didnt feel that great.. still good but it was like something wasnt right.. it could be also for the fact that they have been on the road for much longer and simply not taken care of.
76 to 79 is for sure a great option at least..

Yeah the Bartolini preamp that Roger Sadowsky put in Marcus' 77 just boosts the lows, and highs, and boost the overall output. Not a very expensive mod anyone can do. The new Active Jazzes are REALLY sounding great! too bad they NEVER make 24 frets!

I had a '75 Jazz I bought down in San Diego in 1981. Bought it used for $500. I bought a brand new '88 Ernie Ball MM that replaced the Jazz. Sold the Jazz in '91 but never should have. Kick myself for that move but I needed rent money at the time.

  • @gcanaday1
    @gcanaday1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

72 sounds very possi9ble for the changeover to maple, though I'm fairly sure that rosewood was still available. Fender made made a lot of changes that year, for example the Tele bass got changed from the single-coil 51-ish RI to the Seth Lover 'bucker, it got the 3-screw micro-tilt neck plate like that '76 Jazz there, the logo decal was changed, it got a bullet truss rod nut, among other things. So it's not a stretch to present that they may have made the rosewood->maple change then, too.

I don't believe Fender "switched over" to a maple neck in the 1970s, as these guys claim. Then as now, maple was always an option. I think.

I have a 76 JB with the serial on the head piece. Just pulling it out after a lot of years, and thrilled by all the great stuff on line. At the end of this video you mentioned the pickups being out of phase. I thought I read somewhere they did this on purpose to reduce hum. Comments anyone? My bridge pickup is REALLY low volume. wonder if changing the phase would help.

Rosewood with the pearl lnlays came around from mid 1966 to 1974, in 1975 fender did away with the rosewood fingerboard as an option and only produced maple fingerboards and introduced the black inlays on the jazz basses, the rosewood and pearl inlay options wouldn't return until late 1978 going in the the 1980s.

I've actually got that model, the measurement from the very rear of the bridge to the center of the bridge pickup is about 3.8 inches, but I'm not sure what the measurement should be for a 70's style since i can't find any actual number on the web, everyone just says "closer to the bridge" and leaves it at that.

I owned one of those jazz bass's at the time only thing that came close to beating it was my Gibson eb2 ,changing the pickups on the jazz bass is a waste of time,,they have a lovely edgy tone ,,i never found a better neck than the maple fingerboard model ,,keeping the pickup guards on produces a deeper tone ,,check archive film of soul bassists from the sixtys,,,forget active mods get a good external graphic or even better a decent valve amp

You're talking rubbish. Late 70's jazz basses are held in high regard (antiguas for instance).

For whatever it's worth, I have a '76 Jazz exactly like this and repair guy in N'ville looked it up and its value is around $2500. If it were crap, it would not be worth that much, would it?

As I said buy with care as the build quality can be a bit bad. 1979 Strats are crap.
Some of these vile guitars are now being called "new vintage"

They are vintage though? Also explain why 79 strats in particular are crap? Fenders are some of the most consistent guitars on the market. All models from a certain year can't be duds, there will have been bum guitars coming from fullerton in the 50's and 60's aswell. 70's fenders are beauties, especially the jazz basses. Geddy lee's #1 is a 72 jazz.
