  • Santarem is one of the main ports of call for passengers on Amazon rivwewr cruises. It is in the state of Para in Brazil and is midway between the Atlantic Ocean and Manaus - about 500 miles from each.
This video goes around a number of the main sights on an excursion from a cruise ship. It begins with the Meeting of the Waters where the Amazon and Tapajos rivers meet. They each have a distinct colour. The Tapajos river is clear while the Amazon is brown.
On shore, we visit the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santarem, the Church of Our Lady of Concepcion before moving on to the Joao Fona Cultural Centre. We then visit a market with its wide array of fruits - bananas, watermelons, pineapples - as well as cocoa pods and coffee beans.
The production of manioc flour and tapioca from manioc, or cassava, is shown. It is necessary to soak and process the manioc to remove toxic cyanides. Once that is done the final manioc flour can be used to make, amongst other things, Manioc bread.
The music in the video is all from the TH-cam Audio Music Library and consists of:
    Malandragem by Quincas Maneira
    Et Voila by Chris Haugen
    Beach Brazil by Track Tribe
