As a wednesday fan we are so poor at the back I still can't got get my head round what windass is doing for your first goal but I wish you all the best for the rest of the season
A creative midfielder all day long. I’m not sure if we can get that done. Maybe it’s Kelly, but that’s a lot of weight on his shoulders. To be honest we probably need to get ultra defensive if we can’t get that done. Especially away from home. I’m not sure how we can progress at the moment because of the amount of changes we need.
Whilst not necessarily the answer to our prayers I suspect that Ryan Wintle has a bit more about him than his cameos have demonstrated. More of a technical player than a grafter, plus a good age. Affordable too.
Thanks for the feedback Chris. You are absolutely right in your analysis of where we are at the moment in terms of quality on the pitch and the reasons why you think it is. However, I am a bit surprised at your negativity, it's not like you, perhaps you have had a bad day or something. Yes, there is a need for some considerable improvement but the undeniable fact is that we have an ageing team, a number of whom are either past their best or are simply not up to the standard needed to perform at the level required if we are to do well in the Championship let alone compete for a play off place. It is abundantly clear that we need to improve the quality of the squad with some decent new signings but this will take at least a couple or so transfer windows to do this. Plus having the financial wherewithal to do so which hopefully will come from what we get for Tanganga and Esse when without doubt they go. If at the same time we can blend in some of the young but inexperienced players we currently have in the squad and also ensure there is a good pathway for some of the youngsters from the under 21's that are starting to emerge perhaps we have a chance especially if Alex Neil can pull it all together and make it work. Personally I think to be fair to the club, the board etc. this is exactly what they are saying we need to do with their comments about the so called new direction/strategy. As a club we are in a period of transition and it will take time. Whilst we can all have a view on what should have happened in the past it is precisely that, it is in the past, we can't change it now. It is what it is, and going forward we need to keep the faith and hope that Alex Neil is able to do enough this season to make sure we stay in the Championship.
@@barryevans6251 Thanks Barry for your comments, and I think we are largely saying the same thing. The reason for my more negative attitude to it though is because I think a lot of could be avoided. IE ignoring the bulk of the squads contracts and saying it publicly and wondering why some of them are not performing to normal standards, IE spending 3.3m on a strike force that isn’t good enough. I love my club and I am just concerned if we lose Esse and tango this window and don’t replace them properly, we could drop to league one which would be catastrophic. I am all aboard the future strategy and I think it’s fantastic but it has to be executed properly, and for some of the things I’ve seen so far I am not sure. Hope this helps and appreciate the comments and listens Barry!
@@chatwithchaps I agree Chris, I don't think it was the most tactful thing to say publicly when referencing contracts will not be discussed until we are safe etc. But then you could argue that perhaps this should have motivated the players concerned to go out and demonstrate their value to the club and thereby earn and show they deserve a new contract. Like you I love the club and have done so with a passion for nearly 70 years. I'm of the view that decisions and actions this season and the next one or two years will be pivotal to where, as a club, our long term future will lie. Lets hope it's a positive one.
Well said. We are where we are. Embrace it and hope for the very best. Whenever our club becomes about individuals past or present we are losing sight of what we are about.
Really summed things up there. Pretty much everything I'm thinking you came up with. Alex Neil needs time and they need to give him that and back him. Its a project for sure and will take a good while to sort coyl🦁
I think Harris was getting the utmost out of the squad who were playing for him. In hindsight, I also think that Harris will be proved to have played the best formation and line up to get results. As Harris eluded, there was insufficient quality up front and the club had taken a punt on two for the future. It’s a fine line between success and failure in the championship. Supporters were frustrated that we just couldn’t get a win out of some seemingly winnable fixtures, like Oxford away. Harris probably felt that supporter’s expectations were too high given the hand dealt to him by the director of football/recruitment. Harris probably felt he and the squad were already overachieving. We just need to get behind Alex Neil and the squad now.
I hate to keep harping on it, but our recruitment has just been so poor over the years and remains true to form this year. I was thinking recently about some of the young loan players we’ve had and opted not to sign: - Callum Styles, in West Brom first 11 - Ballard nailed on for Sunderland and probably a £10m defender - Cresswell, in Toulouse first 11 - Shackleton, in SheffU’s first team I understand we can’t sign all of them, but having just a few would make a difference. It’s especially bad considering West Brom got Styles for under £1m and SheffU got Shackleton on a free, meanwhile we spend £3m combined on two guys with 5 goal involvements between them. Until our recruitment changes I think we’re in a lot of trouble, and I think as the squad ages, the poor recruitment over the years is starting to become more glaring.
They didn't sign Ballard because they were asking for too much considering his injury history. He missed something like 35 games the following season so I think that was the right choice in the end because our squad didn't have the depth to deal with that kind of injury. We wouldn't have signed Cresswell on loan otherwise. Styles and shackleton were decent but they never blew me away. I think Cresswell was definitely a missed opportunity but we probably would've never have gotten Tanganga on a free! I still think about what might have been if we had signed Chris Wood all those years ago, theres going to be loads of those stories considering how many loan players we get in. Gallens not even been in a job a year, give him a chance.
@ I’m not sure I agree. Shackleton could have been had for cheap and is a great utility player. The same can be said for Styles, but I rate him more than Shackleton. He would undoubtedly be our starting LB and can also play in the midfield and could have been had for under £750k. I’m not really having the injury thing with Ballard as we signed Nisbet for a large fee despite having a bad history with injuries. We also missed out on Molumby a few years ago as well and he’s turned out to be one of the best midfielders in the league. The bottom line for me is that Our poor recruitment over the years is finally catching up to us, and when we do spend a lot of money it’s on some unheard of striker from Serbia. Maybe he’ll come good, maybe he won’t, either way it’s too much money for Millwall to spend on a guy that isn’t ready for the first team. I think Gallen has the club headed in the wrong direction. We are based in one of the best catchment areas in the world for young talent, so we should be focused on bringing that talent in, developing them, and then selling them. You then use that money to invest in first team ready players. That’s exactly what Palace did a few miles down the road and they’ve been quite successful. Selling Esse will undoubtedly help as it’ll show young players they can come here and get a move to the prem, but we can’t gamble big money on young guys. Maybe having Neil through the door will change things as he’s been quite successful in the past with his recruitment.
@@ColinS89 I stand on my point about Ballard but the rest I think is fair. As for the catchment area, we've been in it for god knows how long and in the last 20 years I can't think of a single youth team player that has come close to Esse in terms of impact. Soo many of them leave before we can sign them properly, that lad who went to Brentford recently is a prime example, Darko gyabi is another who comes to mind. Can't say I think Harris has been that good at developing young talent either anyway. We like physical football down at the den which isnt great for youth and if we move the training ground to the arse end of nowhere I fear it will be even worse because its not exactly easy to get to.
@@jpzammo I agree with that. I think that’s why it’s so crucial that we sell Esse to the prem. Much as I love him and want him here, selling him would show other prospects that they can come to Millwall, get into the first 11, and then get a move up. I also agree that we’ve been bad at managing youth for a while now. Eze, Gyabi, Edozie, etc, the list goes on really. For me though that comes down to not getting them a chance at the first team soon enough. If kids see they can come here and play then they won’t be so quick to run off to Palace or Brentford or wherever. As a club we really need to get better at taking advantage of the great area the club is in. If Palace can do it then there’s no reason why we can’t. I agree it’s hard to find a good striker, but I think we just need to get smarter about recruitment. Nisbet was 25 when we signed him. For me if a lad is 25 and playing in Scotland for a club not called Rangers or Celtic then he probably ain’t championship quality. Then we go for a guy that was just doing ok in Serbia and couldn’t get close to Sampdoria’s first team in Serie A and expect him to make an impact at Championship level. It just makes me think that whomever is in charge don’t have the best eye for talent. We don’t even need a 20 goal striker, just a guy that can hold up play, lead the line etc. There’s a guy like that out there surely, just need to find him
Chris, the midfield is a big issue, they create nothing. De Norre had a bad game today by his standards but Saville’s legs have gone. Bannon ran him rugged today, I focussed on Saville today and he gets deeper and deeper as the game goes on and that’s when he starts committing silly fouls in dangerous areas. Granted him and De Norre have started five games in ten days but we need to alternate. Dan Kelly and Ryan Wintle deserve to be getting more game time as both are now fit. Hopefully the FA cup and more time on the training pitch gives Alex more insight. Ezeez was dead on his feet by the 70 minute having just getting over illness and I was hoping to see Mayor gets some minutes. Nisbet and Scanlon back ?.
Pinched a point there. So much to pick through but for what it's worth my thoughts are; We lacked mobility and sharpness in midfield, again. At least two (probably three) of the back four are playing well below what they are capable of. Honeyman was busy and took his goal well but why was Bannan afforded so much time on the ball throughout? Lastly, Ivanovic was far from great in the loan striker role, but only right to highlight that some of his touches and lay-offs were impressive and showed enough to suggest that he can link-up play in what is a thankless task given the scraps he is expected to feed-off.
I agree with pretty much everything you say. You cannot however play the high tempo, blood and thunder style of football continuously with the same players over and over again. Eventually they will tire and performances will drop off. That’s where we are at the moment. The midfield need a rest. Mitchell and Wintle should start more. Ive been saying for several seasons that there is something wrong at the heart of the club. I can’t put my finger on it but it’s tangible. Neil has his work cut out.
Ugbo will make us patient fans glad, He missed his chance today, but I wouldn't be surprised if he scored the goals to take us to the Premier league very soon. Keep doing your best Sir, that's all reasonable fans expect. 👍
I think they're gambling on us staying up this season, and going for a complete rebuild with the money from Tanganga and Esse. We will need about 10 defenders alone. Wouldn't be surprised if Cooper and Danny Mac (his contract could be up as well) are the only defenders left in the squad.
Unfortunately on other forums people think especially on north stand banter that we have a strong squad, Like you pointed out it’s not in fact weaker than most in the championship. The writing was on the wall when Hutchinson was brought back. Your correct something is going on behind the scenes but I was in the camp before JB passed away he was coming to the end of his era, But James is a different kettle of fish but no one knows for good or bad, I have never been a Harris supporter for management but I think he had the choice of resigning or being sacked by the board. James needs to dig deep and bring in at least 4 players and show the door to 5 at least. And does anyone know why Harding isn’t being played he is at least in the top three defenders at the club

I was at the game and the 1st we were dog shit poor, the midfield went AWOL. There was nothing and our defence on the left was piss poor. When half time came we booed the team off the pitch. 2nd half was a little improvement. Honeyman got us back in the game and Wintle made a difference coming on getting the goal to put us in front. You just knew Sheffield would score and did with an equaliser and lucky for us that what it only was after all their misses including the penalty earlier in the 1st half. Overall we got a point for a very poor performance and Sheffield will feel they were robbed of a big victory.
I can see paralells with the season we last went down with the amount of players that are out of contract at the end of the season. We need to nail.down a couple of those seven players to provide some certainty and give the others some motivation. Honeyman decent in cm today
But, if we single out two or three of the 'old-guard' for new contracts then others are left thinking they are going to be heading out the door (whilst performances could tail off for those with fresh deals). Best left well alone until the season is done.
Although we were strongly fancied to win, beforehand, I had this feeling that Millwall could nick something off us, you always put up a stubborn performance at Hillsborough, on another day we could have won 5.2 ,but that's what happens when you don't take your chances, and by the way, how is our 25tho, crowd is piss poor 😂, you must be going to some incredible places, up the owls 🦉 wawaw 💙
I think Honeyman should be in mid field. He's not a 10. Unfortunatly some of our players are now past it. Alex Neil must have a good idea of what is required now.
Midfield non existent especially first half. Exhausted team we need better in that area to control games better! We looked poor on the ball could barely pass the ball to the forwards. Progressing the ball up the pitch is hard task with this team without lumping it hopelessly or passing to Esse to get us out of trouble. Zero patterns of play! Thank god Alex Neil has time to assess and recruit some signings.
Chris, Harris fell out with Obafemi and nisbet, the style of football under Harris is not sustainable in this league, you say the players bought into it, think back to Cardiff away they had one point and beat us, there were numerous games under Harris when we were woeful, we still have Murray Wallace at centre half, with hutch coming on Harris signed both of them 8 years ago, surely that tells you where we are as a squad.
Agree with you mate, it isn’t sustainable but it’s better than going down. Plus, Obafemi regardless of the fallout was still more effective on the pitch than Ivanovic and langstaff so far
Papering over the Massive cracks Chris left side of defence is atrocious JByran is Pub standard every goal comes down his side I’m at the end of my tether with this player 🙈😡😡😡
it's not neals fault that we singed journeymen defensive midfielders who ran around a lot thats on the previous mob. nowadays they cant run much as their legs have gone. we desperately need a creative midfielder & play esse @ 10 as the link without this happening i see another relegation dogfight on the horizon.
Don’t agree with your honeyman was our better player as that don’t say much about other ten. He gives the ball away to much and gives stupid fouls away. Wallace and lenny was poor today esp lenny roasted many times. Not sure the captain armband is effecting him. Tangana should get armband has you can see he’s getting so frustrated with the stupid mistakes being made at the back. Love the channel keep it up
We need to move away from the Neil Harris rhetoric, surely? It is becoming tiresome and only breeds negativity. He WAS brilliant for our club but we weren't going to progress with him as manager; certainly not with a financial model that demands sustainability and a style of football (like it or not) that seems to be required to progress. Whether Harris left in December or at the end of the season is largely irrelevant because a change was going to come at some point so we need to embrace it and see it through.
Agree with the need to make the change at some point. The point here is, under Harris do you really think we were going down? The problems are much much deeper mate
@@chatwithchapsI think it is unlikely we would get relegated with Harris in charge, but I would respectfully suggest that isn't an argument for keeping him on forevermore. I am somewhat confused as to what you'd like to see happen (genuinely). I don't understand what the perceived deeper problem is? The Millwall/Berylson business model has shifted focus to sustainability and profitability and it wasn't to Neil Harris's liking. Neil Harris leaves the club. That's ok. So, we appoint a Head Coach that is prepared to work within the new model and its perceived constraints. The club moves on. We may go down. We may go up. We may remain in Championship obscurity forevermore. Ultimately, the club will remain in some form or other. What problems are 'much much deeper', please?
@ 100 percent. No one is bigger than the club, and the fact Alex Neil is happy with our model is music to my eyes, I’ve said this before when we announced him. My overall take on the issues are more around the playing squad. One for a much more detailed response and I can do a proper video on it, but it starts with the fact that I personally fear relegation if we do not get the January window right. Again, just my opinion.
Bryan Wallace Sav Watmore are not championship anymore Wes Harding has got to be better than Wallace Billy Mitchell has to be better than Sav Alex Neil has got a lot of Transfer window cmon wall COYL Miiiiii Miiiiii 🦁
I have to disagree massively about you on this, Chaps. The one thing this group of players has is fight. You cannot question that, even through our bad run. No one gives up. No one downs tools. Their attitude is exemplary. We lack quality, we lack composure, we lack good decision making going forward but spirit and playing for the shirt isn't one of them.

Totally agree regarding Harris. He got the players fighting for the shirt and covering for the inadequacies of the squad we have.

You just knew Sheffield would score and did with an equaliser and lucky for us that what it only was after all their misses including the penalty earlier in the 1st half.
Overall we got a point for a very poor performance and Sheffield will feel they were robbed of a big victory.
That first half was appalling. Just lumping the ball upfield, with no composure.
Agree midfield no existent
The bottom line is the squad is not good enough for this league, most of them are league one level at best
Agree . Harding. Hutchinson . Bradshaw. Also gone.
bloody lucky today.
Honeyman keeps giving the ball away no way is a centre midfielder. League 1 ability.
Works hard though😅
Problem is Alex Neil will have no input to any players coming in. Gallen is controlling that and is why Harris left.
Conjecture. 👍
That needs to change or we're fuked for years
I'll take it..but we were lucky
Can't we get Jed back!
Move on I say he’s past it aswell!
As what?!
Worrying times
Also, both Obafemi & Nisbet failed to turn up to training, which is why Harris wanted both out
@ agree Steve, it’s just not the point im making. I’m saying on the pitch, we have not moved forward from them in my opinion
Wallace, Bryan, Bradshaw and Hutch need to be moved on. Langstaff doesn’t cut it at this level.
Agree!
Ears sorry *
Millwall dont seem to have any passion or fight this last month or so .not a good 2025 so far is it 😠
Bryan Wallace Sav Watmore are not championship anymore Wes Harding has got to be better than Wallace Billy Mitchell has to be better than Sav Alex Neil has got a lot of Transfer window cmon wall COYL Miiiiii Miiiiii 🦁
Would have to disagree recently, watched them against Oxford last and some of them looked like they had given up
