This song fits Varian FAR better than Cass. It just goes to show that Varian should have been the main series antagonist. He's got an established motive, is a known threat, and a sympathetic backstory. It feels like they slapped together Cass's backstory last minute in order to shoehorn her in as the antagonist.
I think it was the original plan (the name varian, the hairstripe, the color combination, the parallels with Repunzel) but then someone in the room said “what about Cassandra” and it got shifted

I don't see any parallels between Rapunzel and Varian tbh, but it was made clear from day 1 that Cass was in contrast with Raps, in character and even every detail of her design. Short, dark, curly hair, pale skin, clothes that cover most of her skin, she was designed to be the yin to Rapunzel's yang. Also, idk if you noticed but when they return to Rapunzel's tower in Season 1, they show Cass's reflection in the same shattered mirror Gothel looked in as she disintegrated from existence. When I was watching I just saw it out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it was Gothel. Already they were alluding to Cass being Gothel's daughter, they knew that early on, and that's yet another parallel between Cass and Rapunzel. They are, by design, opposites running in parallel, just like the sun and moon.
I haven't seen the show, but from what I know, this song really fits Varians original arc. I know that "wait" is a Cassandra thing, but it seemed like every time Varian asks Rapunzel for help to save his dad, she makes him wait while she does whatever she's doing. So that line fits, and for the same reason, the opening duet makes sense too. Rapunzel hasn't been a good friend, but still, Varian doesn't want to be a villain. He's willing to work it out until she tells him, AGAIN, to wait. It turns the song from Cass's " im done being overshadowed, im the important one now" into a " if you won't help me, im done trying to be reasonable. Im making this my power, because you won't lend me yours." Super cool twist on the song, and the expressions and framing are great!

I'm glad that Varian wasn't the moonstone holder and was redeemed because then we were able to see the real side of him of who he use to be before his father got stuck. I like how Rapunzel and Varien's relationship grow. I do love this animator however. Amazing job!
1:02 Honestly when Rapunzel said 'wait' it deeply applies more to Varian than Cass- remember when the black spiky rocks were coming for Rapunzel and was destroying the village that Varian lived in+ disturbing the villagers? How he asked Rapunzel multiple times for her help to stop the black rocks but she didn't since her dad said she didn't need to? And how this culminated into Varian trying to stop the black rocks with by himself but he ended up traping his dad instead?? How he panicked and ran to Rapunzel, the righteous princess of the kingdom, only to be denied again and kicked out by the guards??? He litterally kidnaped the queen to get her attention, plus Rapunzel could've asked Varian earlier if he could help her with the weather machine since he is a scientist/mechanic! Definitely wished that Varian played a bigger role, I think he could've played a more compelling villian with a deeper connection to the dark kingdom (hair streak + his dad was part of the dark kingdom!)
Omg! This was amazing! I loved it! Varian fits so much better into this story, bc he, at least, has a valid and more realistic reason for hating Rapunzel. At least, that's what I think.
This is how the show should've gone... :( Varian was such an interesting character and they dropped his arch way too soon. Sure cass still should've gotten her story told but I feel like it was totally unessisary for her to betray Rapunzel out of nowhere, it's so out of character. Plus with Varian's father's connection with the moonstone and the blue stripe in varians hair you would think that they would expand apon it. it would have been so much more satisfying to see Varian get this moonstone in hopes of using it to save his father rather then Cass doing it all out of self interest no matter how justifyable. Ugh! I finally found out the reason why Cass turned the other cheek during this song. Very similar to Nothing Left To Lose. Like with both of the songs, Cass almost redeeming herself until Rapunzel and Varian said something that ticked her off. Varian called her a villain in the other song. Rapunzel told her to wait. Cass has been "waiting in the wings" for her moment to shine. She didn't want to wait anymore. And this really relates to Varian as well on so many levels.
I like gow tge series went but I still prefer varian as tge moonstone. It would be nice if in the second season varian took the stone and became dark but changed at the end and in tge third season cass would have taken it and became tge moonstone. It will make sence for varian to have controle of the stone and cassandra not having control of it because it doesnt belong to her the stone and in the end the moostone goes back to varian and rapunzel has her healing powers while varian has other power!

Honestly I can't stop thinking how it would fit Varian more than Cassandra. I won't explain why because there are a lot of video like that on TH-cam that explain how Varian Villain/Redemption arc was done better than Cassandra Villain/Redemption arc and even because if I explain my point of view the comment would be too long. Still the Animation his beautiful and I love it.
This would have been so much better than Cass!! We would have gotten even more absolute incredible songs, genuinely varian needed more numbers. he has so much more reason to have been pursuaded to “evil” It also would have been way more dramatic than Cass. Sure she’s Raps best friend, but she trusts varian, she hurt him so badly and she still blames her self for what happened while he was trying to save his dad. One thing happens and he snaps. The evil goat thing shows how little he’s appreciated how old corona can’t trust the princess to save them because she’ll always care more about her life than others. Varian listens and then we get so many more dramatic scenes and a whole speach.
