  • A throwback to Saturday 11th December 1999, in dying light Black 5 45110 is seen making a racket up the 1in 37 Lickey Incline near Bromsgrove with a helping shove of on the rear by Standard Class 4, 80079. A fantastic image as the Black 5 heads over the crest and the Class 4 detaches and returns back towards Bromsgrove. This tour was a round trip from Nuneaton to Gloucester and this is the return leg. This was the last time 80079 ran on the mainline, it saw some use on preserved lines after this but is now in long term store at the Engine House at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway.

For a time my father worked in Bromsgrove signal box. In my childhood I spent many a happy hour spotting on Bromsgrove station.

Amazing footage of a brilliant climb. My late father witnessed many a similar scene on Shap with the banking engines dropping off after Shap Summit and then returning to Tebay from his signalbox at Scout Green 👍

Great video, superb spot to be right where 80079 came detached! Can't imagine them allowing an engine to split off on the mainline anymore. Surprised all the 4MT tanks disappeared off the mainline, you'd think there would be a market for one or two.

Brilliant! Why facing backwards, though? As a very small child I vaguely remember the famous Lickey Incline, waiting to be banked up the hill. Highlight of the trip for my train-mad dad!
PS the Lickey beats the other great double track incline: from Ilfracombe to Morthoe, sadly now just a cycle path (which I've cycled many times).

Maybe it was just how the move panned out; after all, I don't suppose there are many (if any?) turntables left on the main line these days.
