Wizards of the Coast completely removed the challenge rating (CR) math from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual, leaving dungeon masters without official rules for balancing homebrew monsters. While CR values may look the same as in 2014, our calculations show that the math has changed, making 2024 monsters generally stronger. This means using 2014 CR math to create homebrew creatures will likely result in underpowered encounters. My team and I are reverse-engineering the new monster math to provide guidance for homebrewing and converting older content to fit the updated system.
