  • John Cleese hosts lunacy from the BBC Radio series The Goon Show. Assembled from 3 shorter clips of the show posted on TH-cam by crystaljollybottom as a public service for anyone silly enough to want to see Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe reading scripts live on camera.

The Goons as good today as when I first listened to them on the radio in the 1950's and 60's during Britains goldern age of Radio and TV, unlike now.

Comic geniuses - my childhood in the 50’s / 60’s was heavily filled with Goon Show quotes. Even today, “he’s fallen in da warter” is often used by my kids and grandkids with much laughter. After over 50 years, I can still remember parts of the scripts of most of their radio shows.

The pioneers of all British humour, my mum listened to them and told me that when she went to work the next day the boss would tell them all to take 30 minutes to talk about the goons and them back to work and he didn't want to hear another word about them for the rest of the the day . Genius is an over word used these days but Milligan and Sykes definitely were and not to mention sellers and secombe

Every time I see a recorded episode of the Goons I have more and more appreciation for Peter Sellers and his range of absurd voices. Bluebottle, Bloodnock, the "mate" guy and Grytpype-Thynne. They obviously spent plenty of time developing the scripts and cracking each other up in the rehearsals.

Spike had such a gift for that sort of thing. The one that always sticks with me is a group escaping jail via an absurdly spacious sewer and spying a manhole a dozen feet in the air. "Eccles?" "Yeah?" "Stand on my shoulders and pull me up." "... Okay." *noises of great exertion* "I'd like to see them do this on television."

Ernie Kovacs transferred their comedy to TV in the US. Rowan & Martin were "direct descendants". If you had wanted to invade England then Tuesday evening at 7.30 would have been the perfect time - as everyone was listening to the Goon Show.

Indeed yes, WG had died seven years prior (1961). I have the original Tales Of Mens' Shirts on tape, with WG doing the intro and continuity. The script in this filmed episode differs several or more times from the original.
When the Last Goon Show Of All was televised in 1972, the on-stage introductions included an irreverent reference by Milligan to WG being "excused, because of (or owing to) death".

Well very little comedy today is worthy of these geniuses, Frankly I think the likes of MOnty Python, The Goons etc etc they would all be utterly appalled at what is called 'humour' these days. Very few can so-called comedians can get through a sketch without filthy language and its all so Woke and politically correct. You must NOT offend anyone.
I'd be willing to be most if not ALL of Pythons shows would be banned or at the very least have trigger warnings at the start and many of The Goons would also be banned.

Peter Sellers was vile to John Cleese when they were filming a scene in the Magic Christian film in 1969. Spike Milligan lost his temper with Harry Hill when the latter told Milligan how much he admired his work. Unpleasant men, really.
