    While it's widely agreed that the Deutschland class is definitely a up-gunned heavy cruiser and can be argued it was not a particularly efficient design, one thing I have come to appreciate about the class is that the German naval designers were essentially starting from scratch. All they had to work with was WWI design and theories and some modern-ish light cruiser designs, and so essentially had to make up 20+ years of experience.
    For essentially the first attempt at a capital-grade vessel by a brand new navy, the Deutschland's are kind of impressive, particularly as the Scharnhorst's were one of the follow-on designs; that is quite a jump in scope and were pretty good designs, even with the under-sized 28cm guns.

      Actually what caught my attention though not emphasized, the Diesel plant and the "pocket battleship" or super heavy cruiser design was highly suitable for commerce raiding. And though the career's of Graf Spee, Scheer, Lutzow sinking merchant shipping does not catch the attention of military historians and naval gamers, the threat to convoys is very clear as reflected in just how dedicated the RN was to hunting down Graf Spee and later Bismark. Only to be dwarfed by the impact of the UBoats.

    Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed the video! I’d just like to point out that when I’m discussing her armaments and upgrades throughout her career she will carry 10.5 centimeter guns that will replace the initial 88 millimeter guns.
    Edit: I understand that I misspoke when it came to the initial declaration of war by Britain and France, apologies for that. Also, some of the photos I chose don’t necessarily match up at certain times of her career. It was a lot harder to find photos in her later career, so I used what I could find.

      Right, thanks and addendum noted. This was a barrel of unknown unknowns till now as per ~ main guns being 53 calibre, having presumed 40 - 45 calibre 1900 ~ 1910s design. (I think the shell was notably light) Another really important new data chunk was the power plant info.
      As you mention, much individuality amongst the class, technical and operational. A .... side by side 3 in 1 cornucopia extravaganza of panzerschiffe would be amazing, although that would require very considerable time. As such, this isn't a request rather more of an expression of interest although shared, doubtless, by many others.

      This video taught me something I don't think I have ever read about, or seen, about WW2. And that is the fact that the Lutzow and other ships bombarded the attacking Russians. Probably because Eastern Front WW2 content has been mostly about the battles on the ground in Russia.

      @hazchemel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Patrick_Cooper yeah , but such a colossal quantum of data to wrap head around. More about German naval bombardment in the Baltic ..... see Courland Pocket campaign.

    I think the Admiral Scheeer was the most successful of the three panzer schiffe. She raided Atlantic convoys, sank the AMC Jervis Bay, raided into the Indian Ocean and along the northern Arctic coast of Siberia. She survived until virtually the end of the war.

    • @ImportantNavalHistory
      @ImportantNavalHistory  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think I tend to agree with that stance. A video I have been thinking about making but don't have the resources to do at the moment is to make a video about the involvement of the Kriegsmarine in the late war, with evacuations of East Prussia and Konigsberg specifically. As well as their bombardment of Soviet troops.

    Also, if I remember correctly, they were innovative in widely employing welding instead of riveting wherever possible, saving considerable weight. And not sure if I missed it in the video, but their motto was "Outshoot anything you couldn't outrun (11 in. guns vs a cruisers 8 in or 6 in guns) and outrun anything you couldn't outshoot." At the start of WW2, the only ships that could do both were the British battlecruisers Hood, Repulse and Renown, and the French battleships Dunkerque and Strasbourg.

    Germany's lack of confidence in their navy. Doomed most German surface ships to piecemeal destruction. A serious task force composed of the larger ships escorted by destroyers. Could have deployed under the cover of night and German radar jamming. Such a force could have struck serious blows against major British forces. It was the good fortune of the Royal Navy to have the occasional surface raider hunt. Making Germany's ultimate defeat, just a matter of time.

    Back in high school, ca. 1968 or so, I took German under a Herr Prow who claimed to have served on the Luetzow. He showed us how to do the goose step and explained how it took an enormous amount of energy and that you could not keep it up for more than about half a block. Also told us how he had to grease the inside of the gun barrels with a very limited supply of butter/lard. How the Luetzow worked the eastern front against the Russians, but that there were just too many of them (the Russians).

      @@ImportantNavalHistory He certainly was an interesting character. I do wonder if "Prow" was the original spelling of his last name, as it doesn't _look_ German. If you keep the pronunciation, it would have been "Prau." In German, "Prow" would have been pronounced "provv," which, as I said, just doesn't look or sound German.

    • @ImportantNavalHistory
      @ImportantNavalHistory  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes. In the interwar period they were commonly referred to as Pocket battleships by the British and other nations. However, in reality they were classified as either panzerschiffe's or later on heavy cruisers. A distinction I try to make in videos. I do call them pocket battleships in titles because its a fun term and gets a little bit more attraction and interaction, like this comment :)

      @@ImportantNavalHistory Indeed, Graf Spee is referred to as a 'pocket battleship' in several news reports around the time of the Battle of River Plate. Not sure if the American reporter used the term, but I'd be highly surprised if he didn't. In reporting the news, there's often a preference for being understood easily, rather than pedantic ontology and lexicographical conformance. In other words, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ... etc.

      It's not the size that counts. it's how you use it😉
      They were wider, heavier, much better armoured, much better armed than cruisers. Cruisers sacrificed the former for speed and range. So very different ships, for different functions.
      A good comparison would be a sports car and a family saloon that are about the same size. Yes, they're both cars, but definitely not in the same class...

      Not really, they weighed less than most heavy cruisers treaty or not. These 3 ships were ton for ton some of the toughest ships built in the 1930's. Built by the Weimer Republic nor Nazi Germany. Literally put all they could on limited hulls.
