People like that are the same who have never had to see or deal with a person destroying themself by smoking. When the male voice says she will regret it, he is literally telling the truth. I say from experience. My grandfather smoked several cigarettes for each day for years, and he ended up at age 64 with a serious heart problem and had to have surgery, and in that surgery he had a stroke. His health is horrible, full of health problems. He never went back to being the same person he was before, his mental state is badly damaged. And so I say: How can someone not regret smoking?

this song is so interesting at how it uses words to convey as the addiction gets worse. And a lover trying to convince the other to stop, he isn't manipulating her the "smack" line is like a light line you can say without thinking sometimes when you are worried for someone, not always abusive/manipulative in certain contexts. And as the addiction spreads and they begin talking/arguing over eachother leading to the ending, where the lines end at several "la-la-la" verses, which is a representative of when his words no longer reach her (as once addiction gets bad you stop listening to the warnings)

This song hit different for me. The reason is because I was like the boyfriend in the song warning my ex girlfriend of things she should stay away from because of the harm and the path it would put her on. She had the same attitude as the girlfriend in this song. And now the very things I warned her about have consumed her. We don't tell you to stay away from things because we can't to control or take away your fun we try to warn you because we know what will happen and we want to save you from the pain and heart break we have experienced. To a point I feel like I failed her. I just wish she would have listened to me.
