The thing is Ernie could sing ANYTHING! Ballads, folk songs, novelty tunes, spirituals and great rocking boogie tunes too. As celebrated as he is by his fans Ernie Ford is shamefully under appreciated as a first class American singer.

Ernie Ford has a beautiful voice, he is gifted. Both of those combined with the excellent lyrics of this gospel form into one of the best songs a human ear can comprehend. The song itself is amazing with or without a beautiful voice. In God's eyes your voice doesn’t matter as long as it's praise. Ernie Ford is gifted for his truly amazing talent. Amen

Back in the late Fifties we would sing this powerful song on Sundayi Night Church Services, the favorite of Mr. Kaye Batz, an 80 yr old Sailor who had sailed around the entire globe on two occasions. . Mr Batz would tear up, remembering the dangers of the high seas. I was a teen ager and this song has sustained me for over sixty years. THANK YOU MR. FORD.

My Uncle Richard used to sing this song when I was a child. I remember one time when Joe and Rose Lee Maphis had stopped by to visit my Grandmother and they joined Richard in singing this old song. This song was sung by many Merchant Marines during World War Two and it was on the North Atlantic where Richard had first heard it.

@moproducer Well I remember seeing an interview with her where she did acknowledge she had her own problems with addiction. Johnny Cash for years credited June Carter with helping him beat his drug addiction in the late 60's. He also talked about how for years he (and June) lied about his drug problems and tried to hide it from others. By the end of the 60's he did begin to open up about it and talk about it, and did so for the rest of his life. But you're right, it was a lifelong struggle.

@60Cascade I had opportunity to revisit this page and your comment stuns me. It was June Carter, not Johnny Cash, who flatly denied her narcotic dependency and died an addict (source: John Carter Cash, "Anchored In Love", Nashville; Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2007).
Even the best of people have their demons; some, for a lifetime. I only hope that Ernie, June & Johnny are finally at peace.

    Brightly beams our father's mercy
    From his lighthouse evermore
But to us he gives the keeping
Of the lights along the shore
Let the lower lights be burning
Send a gleam across the wave
    Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save
Dark the night of sin has settled
    Loud the angry billows roar
    Eager eyes are watching, longing
For the lights along the shore
Let the lower lights be burning
Send a gleam across the wave
    Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save

What is it these days, if you're a male singer, you have to nail notes up in the strato-sopranoshere? Now, here's a guy with a most definitely male voice, not trying to sing out of his range, and at least I think it sounds great.

  • @60Cascade
    @60Cascade 15 ปีที่แล้ว

There was a big difference between Johnny Cash and Tennessee Ernie Ford that I think you're overlooking.
First of all Cash WAS secretive about his drug addiction for many years. When it got to the point that he could no longer hide it he finally opened up about his problems. But it wasn't until he turned the corner, so to speak, that he felt safe talking about it. And let's face it, if it wasn't for June Carter it's very likely that Cash would have died in that terrible drug addicted state.

By that time he had an image to protect.
Johnny Cash on the other hand had always had that outlaw - rebel persona which may have made it easier for him to open up about his self destructive habits. Ford chose to keep his personal life PERSONAL. Like Frank Sinatra he may have felt his private life was nobodies business but his own.
By the time his drinking caught up with him I don't know that he cared that much about cutting records and giving live performances anymore.

The war was about secession over the issue of slavery, no other issue could at the time could have created the wedge that brought about the sectional conflict of the Civil War.The one issue today that could force that breakup of the United States today is immigration ,if for other reason the Southern Border states are being forced bear the brunt of economical and social cost of the cross border invasion of illegal immigrants. @moproducer Look, I'm not trying to contradict anything you're saying (or have said), I'm just sharing with you something you may not have been aware of. I can tell from your tone you don't believe anything I'm saying, but that's ok. If my memory serves me correct it was on the E True Hollywood Story that June talked about her own struggle with addiction. In her ongoing effort to keep Johnny "straight" she herself began to have the same problems. She had to learn to let go, and let God.
