Oh, you could try recreating some historical hairstyles. Like, in ancient Greece and ancient Rome they would literally sew their hair into elaborate hairstyles using thread and a blunt needle. For example, you could try recreating Cleopatra's go-to hairstyle (google "Cleopatra Vatican bust" - it's basically a bunch of twists going along the scalp and culminating in a bun that incorporates her diadem which would've been a white cloth headband). Or for sh really over the top, you could look at Flavian hairstyles. But keep in mind that Greek and Roman hairstyles generally work best on curly/textured hair cause it has more grip (plus they often just look better/more authentic on curly hair).

This is appreciation, not appropriation. Some of you in these comments either didn’t watch the entire video or are just looking to start 💩 where there isn’t any.
To the one person (at the time of me writing this) who announced their departure, that’s a personal choice that you don’t have to announce to a creator. You can just leave, silently.
As a WOC myself, I didn’t see anything but appreciation in this video and I don’t see anything wrong with anyone appreciating facets of races outside of their own. When you know the history of where something comes from and tag/differ to others more knowledgeable than you, that’s nothing but love!

I loved this! As a former dreadhead myself i loved the way you described just letting the hair do it's own thing. That was one thing I loved most about having locs. I had mine for four years before brushing them out. It took me a month straight to brush them out, but my hair was SO healthy afterwards. I will say, if I ever dread my hair again, i will be shaving my head to get rid of them rather than brush them out. Never brushing dreads out again!

    • @StellaCini
      @StellaCini  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hey Stella! As a fellow cosmologist, I’m excited to see that you gave dreads a try! I owned a dreadlock business for a decade, and I also had dreadlocks for 11 years. There’s a ton I’d like to say, but I’ll keep it short. ⬇️
    ▪️WASHING DREADS:
    - Once a week.
    - I use Amica shampoo, and scrub under every dread at the scalp. Once I’ve rinsed it out, I shampoo again but this time I squeeze the shampoo into the top 4-6 inches of my roots, and massage each dread. (I love Amica’s formula because they leave the hair feeling extra clean but not stripped, and there’s no residue.) Rinse again, gently squeeze out the water, and you’re done!
    ▪️THE DREADS THEMSELVES:
    - You did well for your first try! I’m impressed! I’ve done dread wigs for over a decade and a half, and I still hate the scalp issues that come with the nature of wigs!
    - The palm roll technique you showed your gentlemen friend was half right, but I’d love to show you how to do so properly.
    - The crochet method you were using is rather ineffective, and not going to let the hair “settle” and dread naturally. When you create dreadlocks with a crochet hook, you need to get inside the dread (parallel), and pull from the bottom going up towards the scalp. This will allow hairs to mingle in a much more natural way, and will allow the cuticle of the hair strands to do their job, and lock up. (The cuticle of the hair strand is similar to shingles on a roof. Take a gander at Google! Because of this, the hairs lock together nicely with friction.)
    ▪️SECTIONING:
    - You did pretty well, but I prefer a curved, scalloped bricklayer style. It makes it much more manageable, comfortable, and lays prettier.
    ▪️THE HISTORY:
    - As you said, there’s SO much more to cover! I’ve got a ton of historical documents and articles I’d love to send if you’re ever curious.
⚜️All in all, pretty good! I love that color and the way you rock those dreads! I hope you’ll do another one someday. Perhaps with a hand from an interested dreadlock artist who enjoys hair as much as you? 😉 If you’d like to collab someday, I’m here on Insta:

Hi love, I just want to start off by saying i don't see this cultural appropriation. I do just want to state some things. Though they can be used as a protective style. There are MULTIPLE reasons why people get locs. For starters, most people have turned to the word locs. Because there's nothing "dreadful" about them. I started my locs to teach myself patience. Others it's show of respect, esthetic, etc. For those with straight hair, it has to be matted to get the form. I started my locs with twists and just washed my hair. I do appreciate you telling us to do more research. You were also informative on what you've read. But they can be washed and conditioned like any other hair. You just make sure there's no residual product to cause build up.

I also wash my hair with residue free shampoo once a week, and deep cleanse with baking soda and ACV every few months.

I've seen people from literally every race and culture bleach their hair blonde and no one complains about it or accuses them of culture appropriation. So dreads should be as equally acceptable. Do what makes you feel beautiful!
