Not 20 IQ. Probably 70 IQ. He was able to operate a cash register and coffee machine.

I once worked in a state school and hospital for the mentally handicapped. An IQ of 20 is nearly vegetative. You can't equate IQ with autism. Yes, there are some autistic people with low IQs, but there are others that are geniuses. This man is skilled enough to be on his own. His IQ is more than likely between 60 and 70 from his portrayed character's actions.

I love how Lucy’s foster family wasn’t evil, and Randy genuinely loved Lucy so much that she let her be with her father.

    Sam - “Was I a good father?”

Sam friends are the real og's. Honestly, I know people say that "autism is a super power". But seriously.

i volunteered at an orphanage in kenya and i saw a woman who was i think severely autistic, she couldn't communicate properly, very fidgety, didn't care for hygiene and apperance (the workers/older orphans had to bathe her or she wouldn't do it herself)...etc. But i found out she had 2 kids at the orphanage, which is the only reason she stayed there and she definitely loved her kids it was so clear and very touching to see.... she would watch them from afar for hours while they were playing, whenever she got sweets and treats she would give to her kids, when it was time for food she would give them some her food as extra food and throughout my 3 months there whenever she started freaking out and having a breakdown her daughter was the only one who could calm her down.

Someone with a 20 IQ would be unable to care for themselves. Autism does not necessarily mean low IQ.

Fun Fact: 3 of Sams friends in real life have different forms of disabilities. (For example one has Down syndrome) And this was their first time acting in a movie. They helped Sean Penn act with a mental/learning disability. I think if this movie was made today they would have just used one of his 3 friends as the lead role. Versus having a non disabled man play a disabled person. Im rambling ❤

  • @DieAlteistwiederda

He can absolutely be a wonderful father he just needs help to fill in where his limits are reached. Thats really how a lot of disabled parents do it and also so many parents who aren't disabled as well.

CPS be wildin. Some kids get beat, starved, and live in filth, and they do nothing despite having multiple reports from school and neighbors until one or more kids literally die from starvation and untreated infection, and even then they won't pull the remaining kids out. And then a loving family gets terrorized because someone called CPS out of a grudge, or the parents aren't "normal" like Sam's case.

Unexpected ending...yeah! Sam may be abnormal but rising a child from infant to 6/7 already made him an able dad or person to adopt the child. What evidence or proof do they want more

  • @nathanielmany5865

I am going to just say this Sam is a loving father even when he is not smart, he's still a father to that girl. Sam is the father of the year hands down

  • @espionheart6780

This is really wholesome, despite the odds and the whole world against him and having autism, despite that he never stops trying to stay with his daughter lucy, to prove that he is a good father to her and that he loves her more than anything and this is shown by his friends supporting him and the new ones he makes along the way, everything he does just proves that no matter if a person is healthy or has a disability of some kind trying to be a good parent to our child is all that we can do to ensure the child/children grow up happy and healthy life is by doing just that, trying.

I remember our professor showed this movie in class and I cried so hard. I have a cousin who has a mental condition like Sam and we are really close. The movie hit close to home and I couldn’t contain myself from sobbing. Even this recap put a tear in my eye. 😢

Yes Sam has a disability, but his heart and parental care is waaay better than some healthy parents on earth, having a disability does not make a person less capable of loving their child. Remember no matter how someone is different from others, we all carries a heart inside.

I saw this when it first came out on cable. Initially, I thought it was some cheap movie that I wouldn't like. I got sucked in immediately. The sheer love of a man for his daughter put tears in my eyes. A truly beautiful movie.

  • @SilentHotdog28

THAT ENDING!!!!!......OMG.......heartwarming AF. That's possibly the best ending for Lucy and all parties involved can stay involved in her life and work together to raise her, that's beautiful.
