- Harpsichord keys on Key-bed
under oak wrestplank veneered with sitka spruce
I don't recall the species of "deal" that these keys are hand sawed from; It has to have been a hard wood that shows little or no grain, nothing like pine.
The key guide and tabs are supposed to be of European beach which is more stable than the North American beach that this guide is made of.
Natural key fronts are of 1/8 of an inch boxwood; sharp fronts are of 3/8" walnut pieces glued and stained black. I think the key fronts are the only parts of the instrument that are not raw wood.
My man do you have any plans to make something like this? Because I would love to do it
I already made these and the instrument that goes with them. As they are seen here, they are a board hand sawn into 45 key blanks.
Congratulations on copying the true keyboard design from the original. My harpsichord is a copy of a Flemish single manual by Moemans, and has the same keyboard design. I did my own design based on instruments shown in Hubbard's book, Three Centuries of Harpsichord Making, the true 'bible' for makers.
