There's a plethora of TH-cam (amateur) luthiers on various channels however, there's none so articulate, as professionally trained, as knowledgeable as regards to the tonewoods, as clean and tidy, as your good self...just wonderful to watch and so educational ! Thank you.
Leo Kotke said, “A 12-string guitar player spends half the time tuning and the other half playing out of tune”, but if you own one you love it. Nothing rings as beautiful as a 12-string.
I find it's usually the player that causes the guitar to go out of tune. I have a handful of extremely cheap guitars that stay in tune for me all night long and I'm a pretty aggressive player. Hand it off to a buddy and they're standing there tuning all night.
Watching you shape the saddle for the correct intonation like it’s ‘just another 5 minute job’ is fascinating. It’s such beautiful work. Thank you for making these videos.
I really appreciate the fact that you play the instruments at the end of the video (if possible). Often, I spend a good amount of time wondering... how good could this instrument sound, potentially, that might warrent the amount of money it would take Ted to go through these pains. Some really sound fantastic. This one does, in my opinion. Others... not so much. Ted, keep doing what you're doing. Amazing work on all fronts.
Hi Ted, I happen to have a black 6-string Ibanez Concord (Hummingbird copy). I bought it second-hand in 1974 or 1975. It must have been at least two years old at that time. After all these years of playing and staying idle for long periods, it developed the usual hump around the bridge area. The string height was enormous. I solved the problem by installing a JLD Bridge Doctor. Within a few days, the hump disappeared, it got a better brake angle, better string height and now this old guitar plays like butter. I installed a JLD Bridge Doctor on two 12-string guitars with similar results. Thank you for the nice video. Greetings from Athens, Greece!
Nice!! My friend was blown away when I did the nut and saddle job on his old Normand 12 string... His first comment was "Wow! This frets like an electric!!" And with each of the strings intonated individually it was perfectly in tune up and down the neck... Love a good 12 string!!
This video is a great example of why I enjoy Ted's videos so much. He is so intelligent. That fact makes his commentaries appealing and gives him a generally positive approach to the frustrations of luthiery. He's really, really good.
The trick to set the intonation is AMAZING !! You really have THE Best videos around, by far. I just wish some sequences where longer, to see everything you're doing.
I own its twin. 1974 I think. Mine has a built in pickup and vol and tone controls. Same hummingbird design. Mine is very well loved and has served me well since I bought it in 1976. It has travelled everywhere with me including overseas and around Australia. Thanks. I was fascinated to see another one like mine.
Sounds absolutely beautiful! As a 12 string guitarist, I'm always excited to see a video on 12 strings. I wish I had the skill and proper tools to that to my Dangelico Acoustic 12 String. Another person who uses the pads of their fingers when playing stringed instuments is a girl by the name of Libby Luxury. She's part of a southern gothic band from Oregon called The Bridge City Sinners. Also, love the innovation using that B string as an intonator. Looks like a really good option if you can't afford one of those $100 stewmac bridge intonators. Anyways, love the work you did, take care!
I know you were pointing at my comment at 2:02. I have to apologize for my comment in the other video (about measurement units), I wanted to be funny but I guess I had just been impolite. Please accept my apologies, your videos are great and I wish I was as good in my job as you are in yours (although I still do think that the imperial system is super strange :) ). Thanks for sharing your trade with us
Gordon Lightfoot would be proud. Your timing is impeccable. I have a 12 string lying in pieces on the dining room table as I write this. You touched upon several techniques that will save me several hours to try to invent. It should be said, what I would be able to invent in those few hours would not be at all close to what I picked up from you in minutes here. I really appreciate it. I love your videos. Stay well.
Fabulous guitars which sold at a budget price. I bought a lefty back in 1976 with the Fender 12 style hockey stick headstock and it still had a 2mm action when I sold it on nearly 40 years later. Thanks for a great video. I'm definitely going to change the courses over on my current 12. Always struggled with getting both courses when fingerpicking. This is so logical - even if you miss the octave, you are probably going to get loads of sound from it off the vibration of the fundamental.
Just completed my first 12-string guitar build, and was desperately looking for the nitty-gritty details wrt the saddle - intonation and separate string height setting. Many thanks!! This was very helpful, especially the trick with a piece of B-string to determine the intonation position. Greetings from an amateur in the Netherlands 🙂
My first good bass was an Ibanez P-Bass copy purchased new in the mid 70s and that is the way the lettering looked regardless of model. Ibanez only made copies and had a bunch...man, Canadians are lucky to have you. Great job as usual....vid still could be longer.
This guitar was manufactured in the early 70's. Maybe 72 or 73. I have one of that model, 6-string, bought in 1973 but I know very well, the 12-string version that you are repairing and I remember that they had a fabulous sound. As always, another major repair. Keep it up! Thanks
Great work. I bought a brand new Ibanez 12 string acoustic in 1983. I used to keep it tuned down to either D or D# as I found that the octave G string was very prone to snapping. It also had a tendency to "belly"; ie, the pull of all those strings caused the top to rise a fraction at the bridge.
There are many reasons, as have been stated here, to watch your videos. Personally, I watch with rapt attention for the small tips and hints that are in every repair. Those are really inspiring to me, aside form the education that they provide. Also: The Rooftop Singers used two custom made 12- string beasts on their hit 'Walk Right In'. Finally: You don't play a 12-stringer. You have a wrestling match with it -- tuning and playing.
That turned out very well, sounded as if you were enjoying playing that one. The B-string 'micro-jack' is a very clever idea. And thanks for taking the time to explain the business of making the compensated saddle, that's terrifically helpful. Cheers mate, stay healthy.
I had my Takamine 12 string restrung like a Ric' . I am very happy with my Takamine (acoustic) 12 string, but I love my Gretsch (5422-12) 12 string more! Thanks for sharing your expertise with all of us.
I have a Dean 12 string my sons bought me about 10yrs ago, It came from the factory strung like what you just did I always assumed all 12 strings were like that as I never really played any before. Great vid as usual
Best luthier in youtube, hands down. Beautiful guitar, and genius move to invert the string order, props to the player. It sounds "spunkier" to my ear than a traditionally stringed 12.
Nice! Had one of these years ago but sold it to a customer that really wanted it. I’ve switched the strings for customers too, I like doing this on my Danelectro 12. Thanks for the string holding tips!
One of the best "setup repair" videos I've seen. Wish you were close so I could get my 1994 Martin HD 28 2R into your hands. My string height is 6/64" at 12th fret after I lowered the saddle 1/32" and made the neck straight as an arrow. I guess a neck reset would be next. I can not see any bridge rise.
Awesome tips! Again. I always come away with something valuable. Using a bent B-string to set the intonation on top of a saddle? Gold. Same with the double capos. Thanks!
Thanks for another great instructional video, your work is simply awesome. It is rare to see nice work done on 12 string acoustics, very interesting. I have an ibanez 12 string, cheaper instrument than the one you worked on and I managed to move the saddle slot to improve the intonation, it really needed it. Now I just might try to reverse strings as you did in the video. I have always wondered how that would play and also been frustrated when fingerpicking about the lack of bass strength
Thank you so much for this video. I love my 12 string and have been battling the setup for a few years now. Going to replace the saddle again, your intonation method is wonderful! And thank you for the ending. You play beautifully!
Thank you so much Ted for sharing your professional work. I look forward to your videos and even if I have been repairing acoustic guitars for more than 20 years, I always learn something from your videos. Keep up this fantastic work and thanks again.
I think Guild built a reverse-string twelver but then dropped it for some reason. I would like to play one. It seems to me that you would get less buzz because you could get more finger contact on the little strings in the bass with both the left and right hands.
Hello Ted! I had to work on the same model of guitar, and the belly on the top was huge, the truss rod was to its end (very stiff to turn), the bridge was lifting a bit and the frets were munched on the first positions. I could not get a decent action out of it, even lowering the saddle to the minimum possible. It was a nightmare to work on but the owner is happy anyway. Greetings from Italy!
Ref the cork pads for clamping the strings, I saw a really good tip elsewhere which was to use a length of hook and loop tape (velcro) to sandwich the strings.
You did a great job on this guitar. You made it play and sound great. I think Dolly Parton hits mostly note on the finger board and very few cords if any. I have watched her close on TV a couple of times. I truly hope you have a blessed week. Stay well and safe my friend.
Great video Ted ! I have a lawsuit era conqueror 6 string hummingbird that is from the early 70s. Still looks amazing & plays decent. Starting to belly a little bit , but I keep an eye on it in case it gets worse! Those 70's era copies were built like tanks !

Thank you so much for this. It is perfect timing for what I am working on right now. 12 string acoustic and a 8 string bass! Thanks for the info on Rickenbacker 12 string electrics too!
I have the same guitar. I bought it at an auction in 1975 and have loved it ever since. It has all the same issues as this one here! But such a nice tone.
This is the most satisfying presentation Ive heard since my mom read to me. Now she never actually did, but this was nice regardless. Learned from this short video. Impressive amount of work on such a "cheap" guitar.
Nice job and great sounding 12 string. I have a newer Ibanez concert cutaway that I replaced the top and back with solid wood and it sounds great. I always wondered too how Dolly plays guitar with those long nails.
Nice job! I sometimes think that working on a 12 string require more than twice the time and effort. I particularly liked your b string intonation tool, a very clever idea. In the 1970s Ibanez were one of the better Japanese brands, I have an AS100 Ibanez 335 style guitar which was built in 1979 and it’s an excellent instrument made with high quality materials and great sounding pickups.
Always look forward to a new vid from you :) I have a 12 string Seagull that I've been struggling to set up forever. Seems like the action eventually will creep up.
Thank you for this unusual set up. I'd like to try it myself but am a little reluctant to do all the work and then decide I want to go back to the "usual" way. I'll sleep on it for a bit.
Taylor has started to make reverse strung 12 string Builders Edition guitars. Wish I could afford another Taylor right now. Keep up the good work. Really like your channel.
I've had one very similar from new (about 1978) they changed the name to CIMAR, the main differences: mine is all black and has a Zero fret. I've also just noticed the bridge shape is different too. Ted is correct the neck is better than a Gibson's the headstock prefers the neck too it's never decided to leave it.
As always a very good presentation of your abilities. I have to admit that I like the sound of this guitar with the strings reversed. I don't care very much for a 12 string but this idea might make me change my mind.

For a fifty year old knock off, that 12 string sounded awesome. The intonation was spot on to my ears. Great job. Very nice picking and strumming too.
The tip with the piece of b string is great, i will definitely be using that one in the future.
Makes total sense!
Great tip!
Great work as always Ted.
Yes, what you said!
