    In the late 80s we bought a house that hadn't been lived in for many years. with much help from family and friends we took it down to frame and made everything new. Took us 9 months to get it livable. We did move in with 2 young children. They slept in a walk- in closet for a few weeks till we got the flooring done. I know it's exhausting. You got this👍Focus on getting the plumbing, electric, and heating done. Then you can move on to the engine. I'm sorry you have to rush to get in the water. You got this and I'm cheering you on every step of the way. Take care sending positive thoughts.

    Don't forget to put your decorative ceiling ring over the flue before you do any cementing of the joints. It's easy done believe me.

    Cheap 6 inch wallpaper brush best for blacking, forget about rollers. And the brushes clag up so buy one per coat and save messing about.
    Also I realise it's not a democracy but I vote: get the stove fitted asap ;-)

    Reminder to sound insulate the water tank pump area....
    BTW, your ambitious can do, git'er dun attitude reminds me of the 100 day renovation of my first hse - a 100+ year old seaside Victorian building that hadn't been updated since 1920. I got it finished and liveable for my wife and first born son in 101 days!

    If you don't do the cutting of stovepipe in the roof this morning (Wed 30th) there is a 43% chance of SNOW from 13.00hrs till 17.00hrs then at 18.00 Yellow Warning for snow (Leicester) with temperatures dropping down to -3. It doesn't matter what the weather is you can scrape down [Very important] ready for blacking with a PAINT BRUSH (you mop head lol) even if it damp. I have done it my self on some boats, making shore that really work the THICK bitumen in I would come and help you but not allowed toooooooooo. al the best.

    Welcome back, James. You'll be glad of that fire, there's a proper cold snap on the way.
    Thoughts on the water tank... A side entry ball-valve on the tank, connected via flexible tap connector to a 3/4" pipe fitting going through the deckhead / deck, with a quick connect hose adaptor on the outside. Simple overflow through the side of the hull, in case you forget about it, and the valve breaks. Whaddya reckon? No chance of a wet bed! Some of those canal side taps can be reeeeeaaaaalllllyyyy slow running...
    I wouldn't worry about swapping the hot and cold pipes over. The long run of hot pipe will only get hot when you are running the hot tap in the bathroom. While the hot tap is running, cold water will be constantly running through the cold pipe leading to the boiler, keeping it cold. The only worry would be if the heating pipes shared the same duct, which they don't.
    Also, please put the tee on the top / right, and the elbow on the bottom / left, where they branch to the bathroom. It is offensive to the eye of the OCD ex-plumber in me. ;o)
    Have fun cutting that hole. Don't fall off the roof!
    All the best, mate.

    If you are planning to get the boat in the water soon. I would concentrate on getting the Hull blacked! All the interior work can be completed on the water!

    Regarding the arrangement for filling your water tank.. aim to make it as faff free as possible ..( it will be one of the things you do very regularly and will soon become a hassle) maybe a deck fitting with a hose leading down.. this can be masked for aesthetic reasons but should still by accessible.
    .when I was in the same situation you are now I found reviewing my note books and ticked off lists an antidote to all the inevitable part completed tasks waiting for some other dependant task before completion.. good luck..

    Good to see the progress you are making with your boat renovation James, stern gland holdup aside. In this and video 51 you where looking for a solution to the void near the left door/bulkhead/rear deck 3 foot drop. Could you cut left door at just above deck level, stable door style. Top part still opens flat to bulkhead and bottom part opens to newly installed deck? no more void/3 foot drop.

    Hi James welcome home and glad you enjoyed your time out. Sorry to be a bit late with these thoughts but if your top 3 bettons were tougher like 3x2 on edge you would not need all the supporting (scaffolding) which is going to be a fixed serious hindrence when you have to do Maintenance, Repairs , Change parts, and chase water leaks which are all bound to happen in the future sometime. Your locker type creations will also not help with easy access when needed, should an emergency arise. Just my thoughts James, I wish you well and look forward to the next. (PJ)

    Hi James why the rush to get the boat in the water it makes working on it ten times harder(this is from many years experience) also I believe you said you are taking it to London so before you think about going check the Crt stoppages list I know that there are a lot of stoppages around Berkhamsted end of January and through February so you may have trouble getting past until the stoppages end beginning of March ( not impossible to get through but needs to be planned very carefully or you get stuck).but carry on your doing a fine job

    I'm terrible about procrastinating on my Things To Do (TTD) list but if I can get just two or three easy jobs done (I'm 64), I call that a success (Day, week?). ;-)
    A thought (8:28); Between where you're indicating and the wood over the tank, add enclosed storage, with a long sliding drawer (to third cross support), that slides away to fill tank?
    Ah, tea break or an excuse to Stop, Study, Plan and Proceed (SSPP).
    Instead of vertical storage as indicated (10:01), put a swing out door ( left only) with a fire extinguisher attached to it (peace of mind) and find locations in the galley and stern (engine)?

    Happy New Year and thanks for the videos. You will probably need to do a pressure wash before you do the blacking. You'll be doing it in poor drying weather - don't put it on too thick or you'll have too long to wait for it to dry before you can put on the next coat.

  • @michaelburns6197
    @michaelburns6197 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone else has said, it is difficult to visualise the stern deck area from what you have shown us so far, hence some concern about the location of the drain holes in the gas locker. From what I have seen, I suggest a vertical (or near vertical) ladder rather than steps. This will save space on your deck. The verticals of the ladder could extend to become handrails around the ladderwell and you could have a sprung gate across to prevent someone stepping backwards into the ladderwell.

    • @michaelburns6197
      @michaelburns6197 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've misunderstood your issue here. I hadn't realised that you already have steps down to the doors, I thought there was just one giant leap for mankind from the stern deck to floor level. Anyway having read Glenn's comment and looked at vlog 51 I can see that it is just the void that the left door swings into that you're worried about. If the void is not necessary for anything other than to accommodate the swing of the door, I suggest you board the void up and just have the door swinging 90 degrees (presumably like the right door). If you want to keep the void you could put a handrail up around it, fixed to the deck frame at the bottom and to the bulkhead. This handrail could extend along the side of the steps where it would be just as easy to step backwards off the deck into the stairwell.

  • @dannyvancauwenberghe
    @dannyvancauwenberghe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It looks like you have not insulated the tank at the bottom of the boat. If the channel freezes, the bottom of the tank, where the connection of your water system is, will also freeze. If it freezes very hard, it will freeze open. When it thaws, the water from the tank gets into the boat ...
    But as usual, comments are always overdue.
    Remember, even the best make mistakes!

  • @vonasi2
    @vonasi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure I understand why you aren't fitting filling and vent pipes to the tank. It looks like you have access to the inside of the tank so adding fittings to it would be the work of a moment. Likewise drilling the deck and superstructure for a filler cap and vent wouldn't take long. Much easier to do now before it is a finished bed and would make filling it a much easier task. It is a small tank so you will be filling it often and lifting the mattress and standing there with a hose to make sure it does not overflow into the bilges is going to get old pretty quick.
    On a separate point I'd get on with the gas, electrics, plumbing and engine before worrying about the bed. You can always sleep on a mattress on the floor but you can't cook without heat or in the dark and you can't wash up without water!

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok you’ve convinced me. I’ll install a filler hose - you’re right - it’ll save me so much hassle. Would plastic suffice or would the fitting need to be brass?
      I’m not really doing the bed - just the bow for the moment, and flue, and electrics, and engine bay, and blacking.........

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Plastic fittings on the tank should be fine. I'd prefer a metal filler cap fitting in the hull as UV and impact can easily damage plastic ones. Plus you will be unscrewing it a lot and metal threads last much longer than plastic ones. The filler pipe should be a big diameter one to allow good flow without blow back! - but the vent can be smaller (1/2") and go up to a screened outlet (to stop bugs getting in your tank). The vent outlet only needs to be a bit higher than your filler cap fitting.

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt If you can get the vent pipe high enough inside the boat then you won't need to vent it outside and so won't need to fit a strainer vent fitting in the superstructure. It needs to be quite high though otherwise when the tank is full the pressure from the hose will eject water inside your boat! Type'tank vent' and 'water filler' into the Midland Chandlers search box and you will see the sort of fittings I am talking about.

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt For the tank fittings search eBay etc for' barbed tank connector' or 'barbed bulkhead fitting' or similar combinations.

    Please ensure that you have a working CO alarm - not expensive. Sorry if this comes across as fussing.
    You're having taken a break made me realise how much I enjoy watching your accomplishments, a real vicarious thrill. Sometimes I have the sense of what you have already achieved becomes invisible once it is done? Does that resonate at all?
    It is always a bit more obvious when you are feeling overwhelmed as then the video has a greater amount of your reading lists of tasks to be accomplished. It is an interesting bit of process to observe. I wonder what it does for you?
    Would it be a more fulfilling process were you to identify the out come and then number the steps by which the outcome will be completed. As with the stove, I have completed 8 of the 10 steps, only two to go? Please look upon this as an offering which may or may not be useful.
    You are doing something I never could. Colour me jealous. Register me as hugely impressed.
