Vince deliberately created a culture where everyone was fearful of losing their job, being the one major wrestling promotion left. Buff’s firing was done to maliciously keep everyone on their toes, especially the former WCW talent. Mike Awesome said it was such a toxic work environment where he was constantly on egg shells and he was so relieved when he was told he was fired.
@@maxmeza4859 The difference is that the wrestlers had other places to make more money. It wasn’t like that anymore when Vince bought out all of the competition. With great power comes great responsibility.
I've heard him asked about this by Stone Cold and Chael Sonnen and he sounded shady as hell both times. He used Judy Bagwell as an excuse because she was a character in WCW and was notorious for babying Buff so people bought into it like marks.
Being a fan who grew up watching the NWO and it's hey days honestly buff bagwell was one of my favorite members of the NWO he just had that charisma the way he carried himself I thought he was great in the ring buff you did get screwed over for sure and I would have loved to have seen what you could have did on the WWE
That match has gone down in the annuls of time as one of the worst matches ever. It comes up in almost every wrestling "top worst" countdown. I remember watching it live, thinking, "How can THIS be a representation of WCW?!"
The thing is, watch it back, I mean it wasn't the best, but it really wasn't THAT bad of a match, just that the crowd weren't particularly into it, which was as a result of all of the circumstances Buff outlines here. He did nothing fundamentally wrong, it was Vince's ego as usual.
I've seen worse matches, that was just a regular old pop corn match, wasn't a main event style match but it wants a terrible match, do you see some of the matches the Aew or sometime wwe puts out. Idk that they'll ever put bagwell in the hall of fame but they should at least allow him to come back for one last run to prove it that he can still do it, maybe his addiction had alot to do with them letting him go and not due to the match or Jim Ross saying that bagwell mother Judy called in and said that bagwell was sick.
WWF at the time was looking for any excuse to kill everything WCW. They could’ve made millions off of the Invasion but instead they chose to bury all the top talent and quickly kill it off. Buff is a great example. Other than Booker and DDP, he was the biggest name to come over initially. If you look back they changed everyone from WCW and took away the gimmicks that worked and got them over. The list is ridiculous of big names WWE failed to use that came over after WCW went under.
WWE didn’t give him a shot. I remember being so sad seeing WCW be bought out. I knew when they jumped over WWE would try and burry top talent. Buff was super over in WCW, they knew that.
I remember seeing him at a house show in Charleston WV. I had a sign that said Bagwell Blows. He saw it and kicked the ropes cussing me out. Rick Steiner was his opponent and kept pointing at my sign laughing!
I've been listening to smark idiots for the past 20 years say Buff got himself fired for blowing spots. There were no blown spots. The match was supposed to be broken up so they did big stuff in the beginning. It didn't help the crowd was dead because they hated WCW. It sucks to get fired no matter how it happened. But I remember watching interviews of JR and others. Marcus was the cause of his firing. He just came in to WWF, and almost instantly created heat. Yes it could of been better for a main event but it wasn't bad at all, I've seen way worse, and yea bagwell never looked in the camera like he usually did evertime he came out to the ring.

He’s a distinguished looking older guy. I’m glad he’s still not holding onto the whole goatee top hat thing.
buff was one of my favs when I was kid.
you sure thats buff bagwell ?, he looks so different now haha. i swear if i were to see him in real life, i would not even notice him, he would just look like a normal guy we see everyday. glad hes doing well.
I remember watching Mike awesome powerbomb rhino on the ladder, vivid memory
@@Kshep84 such a sick spot, I watched all of 2001 WWF during lockdown and popped for that
WCW did the same thing
@@maxmeza4859 The difference is that the wrestlers had other places to make more money. It wasn’t like that anymore when Vince bought out all of the competition.
With great power comes great responsibility.
JR saying why he fired him is crap
I've heard him asked about this by Stone Cold and Chael Sonnen and he sounded shady as hell both times. He used Judy Bagwell as an excuse because she was a character in WCW and was notorious for babying Buff so people bought into it like marks.
The more I watch of WCW, the more I appreciate how talented Bagwell actually was. One of the most underrated theme songs ever as well.
Hahahahaha. No.
@@stevenhenry5267 I don't care what you think
I had a buff bagwell action figure as a kid
I thought he blamed Jim Ross.
Being a fan who grew up watching the NWO and it's hey days honestly buff bagwell was one of my favorite members of the NWO he just had that charisma the way he carried himself I thought he was great in the ring buff you did get screwed over for sure and I would have loved to have seen what you could have did on the WWE
Over the years, every time Buff has this conversation, it’s over at a specific point.
And in this one that point is at 1:30
That match has gone down in the annuls of time as one of the worst matches ever.
Booker T did have a televised entrance for that match.
Booker T said in an interview he gave up a lot of money to sign on with the WWE
Unfortunately Buff was collateral damage. What happened to him was out of his control.
U did well Buff
One of my favorite wrestlers
♥️
Buff still has the stuff.
Really is wonderful to see someone doing well.
Buff is still the stuff!!!!!!!
Buff would've been great in the attitude era 💪💪
I have heard this same exact Buff interview verbatim at least 13x now
Me too Bro love how he talks in 3rd person
It's probably true then. Liars change their story people telling the truth tend to remember things as they were.
WWE didn’t give him a shot. I remember being so sad seeing WCW be bought out. I knew when they jumped over WWE would try and burry top talent. Buff was super over in WCW, they knew that.
No, you didn’t. “Super over”? Y’all act like he was Goldbergs level lmao
Wasn't the Ultimate Warrior fired the moment he walked back stage (after his match) @ MSG?
yes. this just shows this guy is making up shit.
Still trying to keep that part of 2001 behind me. No cap.
WWE should put bagwell in Hall of Fame. He worked in WCW from 1992 until it ended in 2001. Bagwell was good in the ring and on the mic.
He should not have gotten fired
I remember seeing him at a house show in Charleston WV. I had a sign that said Bagwell Blows. He saw it and kicked the ropes cussing me out. Rick Steiner was his opponent and kept pointing at my sign laughing!
He should have came in with Scott steiner .. they were a good team
Lookin' good, Buff!! *LOOKIN' GOOD* !! Stay strong,...stay-the-course!! 🙏👍
I've been listening to smark idiots for the past 20 years say Buff got himself fired for blowing spots. There were no blown spots. The match was supposed to be broken up so they did big stuff in the beginning. It didn't help the crowd was dead because they hated WCW. I think Vince took one look at Buff Daddy on tv and said no thanks. The stuff with Hurricane was just an excuse.
Buff looked like the typical Vince kind of guy. All muscular with charisma. I think it was Jr who just didn't see a future for him.
@@TheTalk23 JR says it wasn't his call.
Correct
They didn’t watch WCW..that doesn’t mean they “hated WCW”. So calm down.dislikijg a match doesn’t mean they hate the entire company. Bagwell got himself fired
@@maxmeza4859 cope harder. I heard from several people there that not only is Tacoma a comatose crowd, the war had recently ended and they hated WCW.
Everyone talks about that last match vs Booker … but it wasn’t that bad of a match.. at all! .. I think that’s just an excuse to get rid of as many WCW guys as possible- and Buff was OVER! … #ChangeMyMind
Correct
Wrong
No, it was bad and he had attitude problems…it’s his own fault
@@maxmeza4859 Shawn didn’t? Austin walked tf out of the company… don’t gimme that bs excuse I could keep going w the guys and bad attitudes- Buff was over… just a way to get rid of the non organics
@@maxmeza4859 buff was had been over since the EARLY 90s when he was still Marcus - go back and watch the OLD OLD Disney and Universal tapings- you’ll see he was over
He was Great #Legend it’s not fair what happened to him
Goddammit buff daddy is completely unrecognizable in this video.
Wasn't Ultimate Warrior the first to main event one week and fired the next week?
DDP is doing Gods work. Happy Buff turned his life around.
Marcus Alexander "Buff" Bagwell - living legend 🙌
Buff was in rehab with my friend and he used to ship him mad roids in the mail lol said he was awesome would order pizza to the rehab and he had his own suite he would chill with him all the time he lost his number when his phone got robbed by some spook downtown Baltimore City. This was over a decade ago.
Hate to say it but I believe JR over him
I don't hate to say it, I don't believe this prick at all. He believes his own b.s. Nothing's ever his fault.
The fans were sh-ting on that match between Bagwell and Booker T chanting this match sucks.
Vince had lost his touch by the time he bought WCW. WCW competition amped him up. To be honest, he wasn't crap before NWO formed, but it was some of the best wrestling when it happened.
Marcus you are one of the legends brother
he was super over in wcw, people like hhh were scared of the potential of the wcw talent.
Umm no he wasn’t, he was just a midcarder act
Didn't he get the world title? Watch the last 2 years of wcw, buff was more over than HHH ever was.@@maxmeza4859
Sorry but I don't think triple h or any one in WWF though that buff bag well was gonna take HHH spot. I don't think he posed that type of threat to anyone. Your entitled toy your opinion.
@@maxmeza4859 he was. Go watch nitro in the late 90s-2000, he was over as hell
I feel bad for Buff but this is why you have invest and save your money. Buff got big bucks in WCW and bought a mansion and was spending like the money was going to roll in forever. You have to expect the unexpected in this life and always be prepared.
To be fair, addiction has a way of destroying your financial life too. You don't plan for addiction, the same way you plan for the future. Investing money, isn't always a sure thing either.
Buff was fantastic, big fan.
He left out the part about him having a backstage altercation with Gregory Helms
that may have been another factor into his firing.
He's a professional victim. Of course he wont bring that up or take any accountability.
Did he also not try and push Vince for more money?
@@SAnd-pd1ou I heard something along those lines but not sure if its true.
@jamesearlcash1758 I think he did a shoot on it to be fair. If I'm correct he was on 750k WCW, but vince only offered him 250k I think. He reluctantly accepted but then went back to well for more. As vince says he doesn't negotiate
@@SAnd-pd1ou I think I heard something about his mom trying to negoiate the deal?
Ahahahahahaha Vince was like wtf? Ahahahahahaha I may be wrong again but I think
that is so funny. Ahahahahaha
There was just too much of an influx of talents and different personalities all at once and Vince had no plans on what to do with so many charismatic people under one roof. He should have had new programs and brands ready to go before he finished Team WWF vs Team Alliance.
Personally I was Furious that Buff went out like that n didnt really watch much WWF after that...
It sucks to get fired no matter how it happened.
But I remember watching interviews of JR and others. Marcus was the cause of his firing. He just came in to WWF, and almost instantly created heat. WCW was a mess and let it’s talent do whatever. WWF was more organized and crafted. He should have taken a step back and observed, listened, and shown more respect.
It was a hard lesson to learn. And for WWE to still not acknowledge him to this day… something happened 20+ years ago.
BUFF is TOP 5 ALL TIME
Am happy that he is sober , He alway thought he was more than he was.
1:37 to answer your question on that one because they were trying to sabotage him and not only were they trying to sabotage him they are trying to sabotage Booker too but they couldn't get that done
Did Booker T ever speak on this?
I loved buff bagwell. Though I don't think it would've been good for him if he stayed in the WWF look at what they did with Booker (sure he did get the world title at one point but that belt was kinda a joke and so was the King Booker gimmick) DDP and Sting. They would've just buried him and given him a completely different gimmick that wouldn't have suited him
Booker T won the world title the first night WWE took over….Booker T became a 5 Time world champion a month after his WWE debut. Just bc you didn’t like the king Booker gimmick, doesn’t mean he didn’t wither and it was a burial
DDP was old and passed his prime and his “burial” was mainly Undertaker….Sting losing a match, doesn’t mean he’s buried…you kids are embarrassing
Buff should have went to WWF right after American males.
Bagwell deserved better had a broken neck for this business had the look, had the charisma, had the moves he had it all 💯
buff looks super healthy here though an thats good to see.
Ultimate Warrior was fired right after a main event, but it wasn't the next week, so Buff's claim is still technically accurate
Don't want to undersell Buffs point, but Ken Kennedy also main evented RAW and got fired a few days later.
buff is still the stuff
I loved this guy. As a kid I seen him as a off shoot rip off of 95-97 hbk. Both did soft core. But let’s be honest I don’t remember him main eventing any other show but that RAw. He wasn’t a big star except on Cinemax and I say that with respect. I was a fan
Yo no one cared about Buff. He wasn’t the only one fired. He simply didn’t adapt. Booker T and Rey Mysterio adapted . I can’t respect someone that puts himself over so much
Vince and WWF screwed Buff. I didn't see him as a top guy in WWF but atleast a IC champ/ Tag champ etc... WTF.
The problem was ego, he came into WWE expecting to be a main event player because he spent a decade on the mid card in WCW and only got given a main event match out of desperation, you can even hear it now when he talks, "im Buff Bagwell"... Dude that means absolutely nothing, achieved nothing at all.
his mother also didn't help his situation from my understanding.
They did him dirty, did you ever think that one of the boys that didn't like wcw wrestlers being in wwf/e and one of the boys had a ring rat call and pretend to be bagwells mom and call and say bagwell won't be in cuz he's sick or some shit, maybe one of the boys did it, I also thought that the match between him and booker t was not bad, wasn't a 5 star but it wasn't a bad match. Yes it could of been better for a main event but it wasn't bad at all, I've seen way worse, and yea bagwell never looked in the camera like he usually did evertime he came out to the ring.
There’s is NO WAY that Buff Bagwell should’ve been in a main event as the first WCW match in WWE… that was INSANE! His best/most memorable moments in WCW had ZERO to do with wrestling 😂😂😂
WWE, WWF Definitely sounds a lot better but whatever blew it with the WCW invasion angle and they blew it for buff..
Buff is the Stuff...
