@@jameswesten2018 Actually, according to multiple people not named Marcus Bagwell, a couple days after his Raw match Bagwell and a bunch of other guys were at the Corporate Headquarters taking care administrative business and availing themselves of the Corporate Gym (from what I've heard it makes Planet Fitness look weak). While there Bagwell started focusing on Shane Helms and not in a good way, calling Helms a loser and too small to be any kind of success in the WWE, apparently some more stuff was exchanged between the two and Marcus slapped Shane, daring him to do something. Anyway, that got to the attention of Pat Patterson who had no use for locker room bullies, who brought it to the attention of Vince, causing Vince to put Marcus in a "humility lesson" match with the APA (ouch!). A couple days later Marcus was scheduled for another show, but feeling too sore from his APA match he apparently asked his mother to call Jim Ross (then head of Talent Relations) and tell him he couldn't make it. That was the final straw as far as JR was concerned, these guys are adults, unless they're in a coma then they should be talking to management, not their mothers, so Marcus got "future endeavored". Side note: to make a bad situation even worse, when WWE wrestlers get terminated they usually get a generous severance package tied to a 90-day no compete clause. Just a week or two after getting fired Marcus took a booking at some indie show, WWE management found out about it which caused his severance package to be revoked, he lost thousands for a few hundred.

You might be able to get him to be a main event on an episode of Raw or Smackdown and maybe even be a main event of a weak PPV, but he's not the guy you're building your company around. And that's not to say he was useless at all. He had a place in the midcard where he belonged.

There is more to the story if his mother really called in for him. A lot people don't mention that Buff Bagwell's mom was his business partner. That is why she probably called in for him if that is true. Lance Storm claimed she was his agent, and Mike Graham said they ran a company together. The story about his mom stuck probably because he didn't refer to her as his agent Judy. There are so many stories of people in WWE allegedly having bad attitudes anytime they're looked down upon. WWE isn't always correct because they have a history of backstage altercations and scams that cross a line. I heard another story that wrestlers played a prank on Buff making him think they had special treatment, and Buff had the office called wanting more of the same. Buff confirmed that upon his time in WWE that wrestlers repeatedly tampered with his top hat. I'm sure Buff had issues, although not enough to blackball him throughout top wrestling promotions. He was likely made an example out of because there was so much spite towards WCW wrestlers that came over at certain time frames. I think Buff was a talent that deserved to main event in WCW, not saying he could be a consistent main eventer. I never thought his match with Booker was bad and more people agreed as time went on.

I agree. Don’t get me wrong, Vince is an extremely intelligent businessman, it’s how he was able to accomplish so many of his goals and get to the top of the wrestling world, making billions along the way. But his ego led to a remarkably stupid decision that cost HIS company literal truckloads of money and a huge amount of viewers to boot. It didn’t help that he had nothing but ass kissing yes-men in his ear (Prichard, Patterson, Brisco, etc) willing to go along with whatever he wanted to do. There should’ve been at least one person telling him “Vince you won the war, everyone knows it and no one can take it away from you but now let’s make some serious money”, he has the biggest wrestling angle of all time fall into his lap, WWF vs. WCW, fans have been waiting for this for 20 years. Pay the money and bring in the top talent or at least some of them, treat them as a legitimate threat, and the return he would’ve gotten on that investment would’ve been phenomenal. You gotta spend money to make money. Instead he massaged his ego and pissed it away.

WWF at the time was looking for any excuse to kill everything WCW. They could’ve made millions off of the Invasion but instead they chose to bury all the top talent and quickly kill it off. Buff is a great example. Other than Booker and DDP, he was the biggest name to come over initially. If you look back they changed everyone from WCW and took away the gimmicks that worked and got them over. The list is ridiculous of big names WWE failed to use that came over after WCW went under.

But I remember watching interviews of JR and others. Marcus was the cause of his firing. He just came in to WWF, and almost instantly created heat. WCW was a mess and let it’s talent do whatever. WWF was more organized and crafted. He should have taken a step back and observed, listened, and shown more respect.
It was a hard lesson to learn. And for WWE to still not acknowledge him to this day… something happened 20+ years ago.
