Revolution Tutorial - Line Weight & Length (quad line stunt kite)

- Another in the ongoing series of Kitelife Magazine tutorials for using Revolution quad line kites, this one explaining some of the dynamics to consider in choosing between various line weights (strength) and lengths.
If he was a great flyer and a lousy teacher or orator or perhaps a great teacher and a lousy flyer then I'd feel better, but the fact is, John is a great flyer, teacher, orator and all round legend. Thanks heaps John for this info, just what I've been keen to learn more about.
Thanks John, To a new flyer like me I'm finding all your tutorials very informative and understandable at my level. This morning I watched your hover tutorial then went out and figured them out.

I'm glad I saw this as I did not know that 120' length hint! Thanks. I usually make my own lines because the first kite I bought a line broke first flight and it is cheaper to be able to make them yourself for the kite you want. Also just fun to do and a skill needed for when in the field to help another pilot out.

My first Rev SLE 1.5 came yesterday, I've been playing with deltas and foils and now to graduate on to something that looks a lot more fun!
Hurricane Bill had just cleared the area but playing in standing city water isn't healthy, I waited till today.
It was a used kite. All it would do when launched was rotate with no control. After watching several vids I found the bridle setup and yep the verticals were over the horizontal which I thought on the field wasn't quite right. I didn't think I would need to watch bridle videos on a flown kite before I flew it!
Tomorrow will tell the tale!
IDK if you are aware that kite flying is great therapy for a brain surgery survivor? I lost my silly cane! Didn't know Idid!!
Keep up the great tutorials as there are not to many pilots in my area that I can find to learn from.

George Purdy Great! PLEASE, please be sure to search the KiteLife forum for "tuning leaders", as the SLE does *not* come with a simple but very necessary (imho) piece of string on each handle that improves handling by 90%.

I've found several items that didn't look or "feel" right after poor performance and after I looked at it and figured it out such as more tension on the end caps which helped, the bridle change and now this one for tonight, a good hand washing that relieved at least a good gram of nasty dirt and now I'm figuring out this set of 14" handles and how the lines should be length wise and the adjustment knots on them. Thanks for the link
So far my first 6 hours with this old kite has been a blast and a learning experience I'm enjoying.

George Purdy Quick rule of thumb once you have the adjustment knots installed... Start on the end knot (maximum length top lines) and try to launch a few times and in if you're not able to, go ahead and pull it in one knot at a time until you *can* launch the kite.
Try this "dialing in" method every couple of months, and you may be surprised to find the "happy" knot where you can start to launch will be further and further from the handle, a sure sign that your skills are improving. ;)

I have not a year under my belt flying. I had to buy every possible set up possible. I stuck with the 90lb line for all the set ups. I had to feel what it was like to try them all. So I got 13,14 and 15 in handles and 30,50, 85 and 120 ft lines. I try to find which combo works for that day.

I wish you would have done the instructional video that is included in the Rev kites. The old 1980's converted vhs is tough to watch.
I hear you - sadly the manufacturer's knowledge / skill base is also stuck in the early 90s, you can only build on what you know. :)
John Barresi I really appreciate your videos. It helps a lot. I've only had a couple short chances to tey to fly my new 1.5 and it wasn't in the best of conditions. I can't wait to try out the tips I've learned from you. Funny thing... today I was doing some work in a condo downtown overlooking the dock you did your video on. Are you going to be at the lincoln city kite festival in October?

What type of line is recommended (dacron, spectra... etc) what line weight depending on Kite size?
It really depends on the type of kite, but spectra is the go to choice, by far.
@@JohnBarresi Thank you for the reply.... BTW very helpful video. Used to fly at a novice level years ago and just picked up another 2 line stunt kite (delta). The kite measures 120" tip to tip so it is fairly large. We have no knowledgable outlet here for advise and I have made my own lines using 100 lb spectra (I hope this is heavy enough). Also cut the lines at 80'. The spectra braid sure is thin line. Also what winds are ideal to fly a kite this size? Am I on the right track? Thank you for your time and previous response!
@@jamesmccann6479 Should be fine for any reasonable wind, with 100lb lines you'll just want to use common sense as to when the kite really starts to pull and/or tug (big gusts).
