In my younger days; the family would go to Idlewild for company and school picnics. We would always met at the carousel. There use to benches all the away around the carousel. This was popular place to stay when it was raining. This video brought back some good memories. Thanks
I notice on a lot of American carousels (as opposed to British and continental ones) that the outer row of horses stand still, and it's the ones on the inner rows that gallop.
There are some that gallop on the outer row but not many. I know the one at Disney’s Magic Kingdom does but that was a later alteration that was done before it was installed at the park.
I recognize the opening music in your stills. It is "The Sidewalks of New York", as played on Bill Black's Wurlitzer 153 organ, on one of his "Carrousel Music" recordings.
Notice that the snare drum on the Wurlitzan sounds amazing but you can barely hear the cymbal (exact opposite of Kennywood, where they have the snare too tight and the cymbal nice and loose
The second song march the wurtlizer organ is playing is “under the double eagle march (Unter dem doppeladler)” composed in 1893 by Josef Franz. (J.F) Wagner.
I might be working at idlewild this summer so i might be able to get a vid of the Wurlitzan playing the "The Witch Doctor" (BTW, sounds like they need to clean the tracker bar lol)
It sounds better when it uses lots of it's pipes like a normal Artizan D would do, rather than just one pipe at a time. Then it sounds rather poorly. It ESPECIALLY sounds bad when the wind chest is dirty.
@caliberkid Guess what! Those benches are still there!! I love going to Idlewild on rainy days just to watch/ride the carousel and record the band organs...
I love the music. Someone bring the merry go round and this music my way. This kid wants to ride the merry go round. Even better, I would like to be playing the music.
You should go back. I'm 45 and I spend literally about an hour at Idlewild's carousel every time I go (about every 2-3 years), and I live in central Texas. At Knoebel's Amusement Resort I spend lots and lots of time at their fantastic carousel, though much more on my boyhood coaster, Phoenix, which I helped to save & relocate from TX. to PA. Kennywood? Hersheypark? Anywhere with a classic hand-carved wooden carousel & band organ I spend LOTS of time at! Only wood coasters get more of my time!
The horses look like the kings island Grand carousel horses but the horses on the kings island grand carousel are mixed up and not in the same order as this
The first tune played by the 103 sounds like a European march, possibly German. Since Mike Kitner arranged at least one European roll for this scale, I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I have to say, that 103 sounds extremly dinky behind that giant Artizan D facade! The Artizan model D was the largest regular-production organ in the Artizan line, and the arrangements on the rolls can be wonderful. Carrousel Music offers recordings of "Lindy", a D formerly owned by Allan Stafford of PA.
Did anyone else ever know that the horse's names are on the bottom of one of their hooves? Some horses have names. I remember one of the white horses that didn't move was named Mr. Hood. Anyone ever see him??
It is high time that somebody puts a D back on a carousel where it belongs. All of the four original D organs that I know of are in private collections. Only one is trailer-mounted and occasionally seen at band organ rallies. This D facade should have an original organ chassis put back behind it, not the Wurlitzer 103 which, though a decent organ, is too small and shrill for this carousel. If you want to hear D music right now, the Frati organ at Knoebels (on TH-cam) plays D rolls.
It's so sad how the owners are letting this beautiful carousel go, atleast 3 horses have a missing leg and they are all so badly chipped. They have a stereo for music now
@CoreyD1086 The first tune (after the pictures) is On the Beach, the second tune isa macrh called Under the Double Eagle. They were both being played on a WurliTzer 103 band organ.
@Donald Franklin So do I, unfortunately that is something we are sadly lacking here in Florida. We do have one classic carousel down here but it's been heavily modified by Disney. We also do have a number of modern metal carousels, some of which are quite unique. Unfortunately, there are no real band organs playing with them. The recorded band organ music just isn't the same as the real thing.
I was just going by what the NCA (National Carousel Association) website says and they say that this carousel has a WurliTzer 103 with a Artizan facade as well as having a WurliTzer Calliola.
@lilybelle20000 You go me, cause I have no idea. Also the song names are listed in the description as well as in the comments left by other viewers. I do know that the tune being played on the WurliTzer Caliola is a medley of songs from some of the Broadway plays that were produced by Rogers and Hammerstein.
The big organ is not a Wurlitzer it's a artizan d with a Wurlitzer wroll frame the other Wurlitzer they bought I read about there carousel on Wikipedia and they talk about the organs
The Artizan has had extreme modifications. It's pretty much been turned into a Wurlitzer 103 because almost every single of the Artizan D pipes that were originally in it have been replaced by Wurlitzer 103 pipes. Little to no Artizan pipes are left in it.
Well, that's because it is a Wurly 103. It's a shame they didn't keep the original organ as I would have loved to hear it play. But atleast there's still a real organ there, and no a recording of one.
Song at beginning/Wurlitzer 153: Sidewalks Of New York. Artizan D/Wurlitzer 103: Unter dem Doppeladler Marsch and Under The Double Eagle. Wurlitzer Caliola: 'Oklahoma' Medley -
You're welcome. I went to this park this year, but I didn't get a chance to hear the Artizan D/Wurlitzer 103 and the Wurlitzer Caliola only played one roll... same for Kennywood's Wurly 153.
Ok. I always really like mechanical music. Also, my cousin has not just a Piano(my grandparents have a piano) but my cousin has a PIANOLA(a mechanical self playing piano) which was a well kept secret until the last time I saw my cousin, which was August 2017.

Man, I haven't been to Idlewild Park in years -- thanks for posting this!
Yeah, I thought that facade seemed a bit large for the Wurlitzer 103.
Because it originally was an Artizan D. Before some idiot replaced all the artizan pipes for 103 pipes.
I might be working at idlewild this summer so i might be able to get a vid of the Wurlitzan playing the "The Witch Doctor" (BTW, sounds like they need to clean the tracker bar lol)
It operated for only one season at Atlantic City in a unknown location then moved to Idlewild Park.
I never noticed before, but the caliola sits up on top of a raised platform
That artizan style D is playing the Wurlitzer 103
It sounds better when it uses lots of it's pipes like a normal Artizan D would do, rather than just one pipe at a time. Then it sounds rather poorly.
It ESPECIALLY sounds bad when the wind chest is dirty.
CBF1 well I just hope it will
@@BrantDisneyfan Yeah, hopefully it gets fixed and starts playing the proper way soon.
CBF1 yeah I just hope they will
@@BrantDisneyfan here is a real Wurlitzer 103: th-cam.com/video/QB5wtf6yNBY/w-d-xo.html
No problem, glad you liked it :)
@Bryce Jones I do believe it's recorded music played over a loudspeaker system.
@caliberkid Guess what! Those benches are still there!! I love going to Idlewild on rainy days just to watch/ride the carousel and record the band organs...

Tune 2 Under the double eagle March.

This is one of my favorite carousels! I enjoyed visiting it when the NCA was in Pittsburgh in 2005
I just found out that "Unter dem Doppeladler Marsch" and the previous march heard at 2:10 are actually Artizan arrangements!
Under the double eagle march.
@@benjaminclasper3066 What’s The Third last one?

I saw Mr. Hood this year that I went! He is that beautiful white stallion with the green-themed decorations and saddle! -
Look at 3:27 and PAUSE! That's who he is! :D
I'm not shure what the name of the tune is. But I do know it's a medley of songs from different Broadway shows from Rogers & Hammerstine.
Oklahoma

I have a question. What color are the sweeps of the merry go round at both Kennywood and Idlewild?
Idlewild is pink and kennywood is blue

As far as I know, most WurliTzer band organs have drums.
I agree. OK, someone has finally uploaded a video of an actual original Artizan D organ to TH-cam. Just search "Artizan Style D Band Organ".
where does the song in the begin of the video come from what's it called?
The Sidewalks of New York
The Wurlitzan needs a lot of work but the caliola sounds absolutely beautiful
1. Sidewalks Of New York
2. On The Beach
3. Unter Dem Doppeladler
4. ???
Isn't this the Caliola playing? Does the Artizan organ still exist somewhere?
4.27 under the double eagle
@louellasnugglebunny It is a beautiful carousel. But my favorite is th Dentzel Carousel at Kennywood Park which is about 30 minutes west of this park.
@CoreyD1086 Which one was playing it? The WurliTzer 103 band organ or the smaller WurliTzer Calliola?
So the big band organ is a wurlitzer 103 with a artzian d facade
Do you know what canned music is?
@anglerfly That may be, but wasn't Oklahoma written by Rogers & Hammerstine?
The big organ is not a Wurlitzer it's a artizan d with a Wurlitzer wroll frame the other Wurlitzer they bought I read about there carousel on Wikipedia and they talk about the organs

Yes the Caliola is still playing, unfortunately, I don't know the fate of the Artisan organ.

@anglerfly No problem :)
