No joke, I was born and raised a good portion of my life in Italy, specifically right in that line which divides Italy into north and south (nearby the city of Ancona) at 0:25, and whenever I meet a southerner he thinks I'm a northerner polentone, and whenever I meet a northerner he thinks I'm a southerner terrone. The fact is, people from the centre (Marche, Toscana, Umbria and Lazio) don't give a flying fuck about neither but at the same time we are not really consider neither of them. I guess we're just in the fucking middle caught in the unfriendly fire.
As a Venetian italian I found the lack of discrimination in the northern regions very insulting 😤 we all hate and discriminate each other a whole lot up here, from Liguri (stingy people) to Lombardi (money-driven) to Veneti (alcoholics and blasfemious)

I am American but lived in several northern Italian regions for 15 years. You should have heard how northerners spoke about southerners and how southerners spoke about northerners. It usually was not very nice. I traveled all over Italy and got to know the country without listening to peoples bigotry and prejudices.

I feel like Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are kinda living their best life. No one trashtalks about them and they aren't stereotyped much. They're like those two regions in the middle nobody truly hates.
Emilia-Romagna is north either culturally, linguistically and geographically (the po' valley is what actually defines the north region: a flat terrain without obsacles makes exchanges and travel easier since ancient times), if you go in 2 random towns in emilia and in lombardy you could hardly notice a difference if you're from another region (except in Emilia you'd eat much better)

I've had countless regional specialities from all over the world, cultures and nationalities and i've lived for a good amount of time in lot of different countries because of my work. Italians really have a completely new whole world in that piece of land. Italy is the richest country when it comes to biodiversity. The microclimate, the morphology and its geography combined with so many microcultures spawned one of the best place+culture you can have when it comes to food. Even SUPERMARKETS in italy have better vegetables than the one they sell in other countries (and don't get me started on the local producer's more natural and biological products). Don't underestimate Italy's climate and their food culture, italians are very lucky to have all that.

I am American but lived in several northern Italian regions for 15 years. You should have heard how northerners spoke about southerners and how southerners spoke about northerners. It usually was not very nice. I traveled all over Italy and got to know the country without listening to peoples bigotry and prejudices.
So what did they say?

the hardest thing to realize for foreigners (and i can't be surprised of this of course) is how far we Italians are from the classic "beauty and artistical and romantic" view we are depicted as from them, and...we also are so damn far away from the classic "super mario" stereotype which, as of today, would, if ever depict italy way too positively and cheerfully than currently is . and no..today mafia IS NO LONGER the only "bad side" of daily life in italy...

I feel like Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are kinda living their best life. No one trashtalks about them and they aren't stereotyped much. They're like those two regions in the middle nobody truly hates.
Emilia-Romagna is north either culturally, linguistically and geographically (the po' valley is what actually defines the north region: a flat terrain without obsacles makes exchanges and travel easier since ancient times), if you go in 2 random towns in emilia and in lombardy you could hardly notice a difference if you're from another region (except in Emilia you'd eat much better)

I've had countless regional specialities from all over the world, cultures and nationalities and i've lived for a good amount of time in lot of different countries because of my work. Italians really have a completely new whole world in that piece of land. Italy is the richest country when it comes to biodiversity. The microclimate, the morphology and its geography combined with so many microcultures spawned one of the best place+culture you can have when it comes to food.
Even SUPERMARKETS in italy have better vegetables than the one they sell in other countries (and don't get me started on the local producer's more natural and biological products). Don't underestimate Italy's climate and their food culture, italians are very lucky to have all that.
