    No joke, I was born and raised a good portion of my life in Italy, specifically right in that line which divides Italy into north and south (nearby the city of Ancona) at 0:25, and whenever I meet a southerner he thinks I'm a northerner polentone, and whenever I meet a northerner he thinks I'm a southerner terrone.
    The fact is, people from the centre (Marche, Toscana, Umbria and Lazio) don't give a flying fuck about neither but at the same time we are not really consider neither of them. I guess we're just in the fucking middle caught in the unfriendly fire.

      xantiphos Still a great empire to dismantle though... Italy of today, or after the Roman Empire is not the same Italy with the same people as when Augustus ruled. The demographics changed a lot after Justinians' war against the Ostrogoths, and the other waves of invasions: Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Lombards, and Franks. Many Italian names today do not have an ounce to do with the old Roman Empire...

    • @xantiphos
      @xantiphos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Certainly not, but Rome served as the setplace for everything that happened in Italy afterwards: Barbarian invasions, wars of Justinian, Arab Invasion, Norman Invasion, rise of the church, rise of the merchant republics in the north and feudalism in the south, etc.
      All those things that took place in Italy have difined the variety of Italians one can find from north to south, and accent differences. But once again, I think none of that can be understood without Rome.
      Not in vain the Inno di Mameli mentions it.

    Italy is not a single country. There are 2 countries inside one. North is similar to Austria or France, and South is similar to Albania or Greece. You won't believe that there's huge racism between Northern and Southern Italians. Back in the time Northern Italians didn't want Southerners to come up in the North. They wrote at the doors "We don't rent to southerners" (sometimes still happens) because they came (and come) in a massive number up in the North. There are even racist slurs towards North and South "Terroni"(against south) and "Polentoni"(against north). Back in time was a really strong party in northern Italy that wanted to split the country and called the North "Padania". Those secessionists still exists both in North and South. Italy is not united country.

      It's very true that it used to happen, but I can tell you that, as a person who lives in the center-north, I have NEVER seen any kind of discrimination against people from the south or the north: at least 70% of the people here have, whether far or not, originating from the south or north, as well as in many other places in Italy. If we wanted to discriminate non-purely Tuscans we would have to discriminate practically everyone: is it possible? No. For this I can assure you that I have never suffered discrimination in other regions or have seen it in mine. The maximum of discrimination was to make simple innocent jokes, among other things also self-deprecating.
