Our Generator died during a snow storm

It never happens on a sunny day, our little generator finally died and even though it wasn't in our budget we had to run out and get a new one. I could have spent less and got a smaller generator but the 13,000 watt trip fuel generator from Harbor Freight was the biggest one we could find for the price. It still isn't as big as we need to fully utilize our chargeverter from signature solar but it will get us through this winter.
Watch a former Firefighter and a stay at home Mom carve out an Off Grid Homestead in the North Idaho Wilderness. Come along on our journey towards freedom and independence not just for us but many Generations to come, all to the glory of God.

The generator is a great early birthday gift.
yes it was
I live in Texas and I have two generators, up there I would have 5 probably and I test run every month
Good luck with the new one 😊
Thanks, you too!
Wonderful
Thanks for watching!
watching this made me 1.7% more retoded

It's like your new automobile sticker saying you get 30 mpg and in real driving you get 25, all generators use erroneous numbers to sell their product. I'd recommend you find a good stationary generator specifically designated for the house, maybe a 15-20 k output.
We'll definitely be looking into a more powerful stationary generator that would be better suited for our needs!
I used to sell those generators in Central Texas to contractors. They took a beating very well.
That's good to hear because it will run a lot during our dark month of December each year.
The most likely cause is the power cord going from the generator to your chargeverter. 50 Amps is a lot. I'd check your voltage at the generator under full load, then check the voltage at the input to the chargeverter at full load. If the voltage drop is more than 3% then the voltage drop is likely causing the chargeverter to throttle back it's power intake. In which you would need a much heavier cord, or a shorter run. I'm guessing your gonna want around a 6 ga cable for at least the majority of a 50 foot run.
Alternatively, you could try plugging the chargeverter's cord directly into the generator (no extensions), and see if it provides full output. If it does not then the generators voltage output may be set too low, and there might be a way to adjust that.
@@aspendell209 Thank you so much, I will look into that and see, we just matched the gauge of the chargeverter cord but we may need to increase it for the length of the run.
i really like my generac (nickname: ginny). it has been flawless for over ten years with the exception of battery changes............g
good to hear. Thanks for the recommendation
That amount of snow blows my mind. Our “once in a generation storm” produced 3” of snow in Houston which actually lasted 3 days. That’s not happened for over 100 years. My grandkids were out of school for those 3 days. We only got a dusting here in deep, east Texas. It’s currently 63 degrees. lol, I’m setting out onions tomorrow. Y’all stay warm!
Thasnks, The very nice thing here it that everyone is ready for the snow, I immagine that it might as well have been 2 feet in huston. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing

Looks like they would package it fully assembled in a bigger box to fit. 😮
I'm sure they saved millions by using a smaller box😜 Thanks for watching
It seems that model generator doesn't last too long. Really hope you paid for the extra warrentry. GOOD LUCK
I agree that this is a "temporary" fix while we wait for the best solution, we did buy the protection plan because it will be worked hard. Harbor Freight says we can exchange it for a new one in store within 2 years for any reason so we will see if it is really that easy.
@@1KGoffgridhomestead Yes Harbor Freight is pretty fair with their replacement policy. I think they get a lot of that model back, probably due to over-use. GOOD LUCK
Can you insulate the propane tank or put a heat blanket on it? 😮
That's a great Idea. a heated blanket will use a lot of power that we are trying to make but I think I may aim the exhaust towards the tank to warm it.

Thanks for watching!
Wait until the cam shaft snaps in two like the two Predator's from Harbor freight I bought and used for 2 1/2 months each. Harbor freight told me it wasn't covered under warrantee. Good Luck however it turns out for you.
Thanks for the heads up, I'm gonna keep an eye on that. The store manager made it sound like with the protection we purchased we can bring it in and exchange it for any reason. was yours the off the shelf warranty or the extended plan?
Mid week video, woohoo !!
Trying to get current. Thanks for watching.
What size breaker is on that receptacle? 50A?
There is nothing written on the breaker but it says 42 amp max at 240 volts
It was the right size, 13000w @80% 10400w with 2 chargeverters 5kw each?battery temp can lower what it can charge even 50f can effect it. that's a peak charge on my system 2 chargeverters.or run 1 chargeverter L14 and a 5000w dryer L50 charge/laundry time. I have 9kw I have to run it at 6200w to get a clean 60hrz, I wish I bought a 13kw, my gen times would be 26min average. If it wasn't an 8 hour round trip to sandspit I would have lent or sold you my back up since its gas only 5kw and I want a LPG backup instead. If you need larger the 13kw is a fantastic back up. My weather was super sunny in Jan only 70hrs gen this winter. 342 last winter but no PV4. My 400lb was good as low as -27F.
Are you able to use a blower to clear the solar panels?
At the winter angle the snow slide right off as the bifacial panels heat up, we do have a brush on a long pole if it doesn't come of quick enough.
Down with all fossil fuel based generators ! The manufacturers lie about how much (Current) AMPS fossil fuel based generators output. Also, gas gennys often output dirty AC power, which contains THD total harmonic distortion greater than 6 % in the 60 Hz oscillation wave, thus sensitive electronics do not perform normally. The reason you can't get 80 AMPS out of your charge/controller to your battery array is due to 1. Not enough current from generator. 2. Genny outputs 110 or 115 Volts AC instead of the UL/CSA Standard of 120 Volts AC. The only way to get absolutely stable AC with max stable current is to go Diesel Gas Genny. 👍
Thanks, that explains a lot, The great thing about our EG4 Chargeverter is that it accepts the dirty AC power from the generator and converts it to DC where the grid side of our inverter charger will not charge the batteries with dirty generator power. I think I need a bigger generator to get the 90-100 amps out of my Chargverter.
@@1KGoffgridhomestead Correct ! 👍 If you want 80 AMPS or higher, then you should go Diesel Genny. These COSTCO specials are all cheap Chinese Junk ! The Chinese manufacturers lie about their stated ratings ! They use tiny, cheap copper alloy windings in their rotors, and simply hide their 110 or 115 Volt AC output spec ! If the receptacle for 120 Volts doesn't have a horizontal indentation on one of the AC output forks (On the Left Hand side), then it isn't putting out 120 Volts ! The tell tale sign is the 50 AMPS output Socket not outputting an actual 50 AMPS.
@@markjob6354 this Generator is hopefully just a temporary bandaid until we get a real standby generator, I will need to check the output voltage under load to confirm that it matches the 244 volts the screen states. I also need to check the voltage at the chargeverter to confirm I do not have too large a voltage drop as @aspendell209 recommended
@@1KGoffgridhomestead Correct ! 👍
