Just finished watching this and I have never wanted to drive 5 hours to go see somewhere I never knew existed as much as I do right now! Thanks for sharing and keep up the amazing work!
Not many kids of today will know the joy of going to the mall on the weekends with friends, watching a movie in a theater attached to a mall, playing in the mall arcade, eating at the mall food court & coming home with something bought from one of their favorite stores, all in one stop. I am so glad I discovered your channel. Your expeditions bring back so many memories for me. I only know of one mall from my teenage years that is still flourishing & that is the University Mall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Not only was this video amazing with the drone footage but with the outside mall walk and your voice over input was hilarious. On the other end this mall is beautiful and is full of charm I hope for more of it to re-open and with the current mall owners It may happen. I like the direction the mall is going hope it continues 🍨
This episode was absolutely hilarious, and I especially loved the green corridor; it felt like a great start to a horror video. The security lock bars comment was an unexpected source of chuckles, too. Awesome episode!
That little area is amazing for jobs for energy and has a lot of food dives in that area too between that area of Dunbar and Connelsville . Man so many great memories in that area and mall . I’m glad you covered it
I used to love to eat at the Valley Dairy Restaurant when I was a kid. My mother would buy me bubblegum cigarettes at the shop next to the restaurant. 😂
LOL The Mall walking Girl with the Plith . Pitfall was amazing, a bunch of us played this constantly back in the day.I’m cracking up, I think I know you pretty well, but your conversation with yourself is new and quite amusing. Should I be concerned.? That hallway looked very green. It will be curious how malls re-purpose relevant to the areas they are in. The scenery is quite lovely, great job Sweetie🥰💃🦇🕷🕸
Metzler's at Laurel Mall was a branch of the beloved downtown Uniontown department store. Metzler's was a class operation and operated a full line, five floor department store well into the late 1980s. The Laurel Mall store lasted a few years after downtown closed. Quality merchandise and excellent service--both sadly missing in retail today.
I love all my "Dead Mall" (or dying...or repurposed...or rebuilt...or anything) channels but this ExLog shows why you're the master of this knowledge domain...the true "Liminal King". Love the history (old commercials and the subject analysis / narrative), the "voice-over to the voice-over", the footage (drone, walking, stills)...just amazing. My schedule's chaotic but I've GOTTA catch your next premiere.
Hi Sal, I have many relatives that live in this area. It was so great to see you review this mall I visited many times as a kid! Sadly, Connelsville has been on the decline for literal decades after much of the industry left in the 80s and 90s. Pechins is still open but moved locations to it's more downtown former express location, which has since grown and been renovated significantly. It had great prices and a decent bakery, but aesthetically looked like an Ollie's Bargain Bin on the inside. There used to be a pizza and sub restaurant in the mall too. I'm glad it got some recognition! If you're looking for more dying malls in PA, check out the Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage. It has a wing that is still original to the mall and somehow has barely survived COVID. Best of luck on your YT journey!
Back to watch this one again! So upset I never visited this place when we lived in Pittsburgh. I really wish there was a place like this to visit down in my area of SC. I would go often. 😂
I had gone here many times as a kid and the mall was packed. We would go get my grandma and go Christmas shopping and either eat at the valley dairy inside or the food court on Murphy's. My first job as a kid was at Montgomery Ward as custodial maintenance. I miss this old mall.
I used to work on a hazmat team, was a 9/11 responder, etc. Our company did remediation projects at malls, the ones that had the detached "auto centers" repair shops. I've probably been to every mall east of the Mississippi. Probably didn't visit most of these spots, except for a quick run into the food court for lunch. Great video as always, Sal!
I participated in Pinewood Derbies there while in Cub Scouts... also played the heck out of the TMNT arcade game there when it first came out, and the arcade was usually a packed house. Good memories!
Hi Sal, I have been subscribed to your channel for a couple of years now and I rarely make comments, but I love your walk throughs and back history of Malls. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and the closest Mall to me was about a 20 minute drive, so it was always a big deal to "Lets Go To The Mall" ( thank you Robin Sparkles ) and just hang out. So I always get a tingle of nostalgia watching your videos. But, but, but, ......Dude...........I LOVE your snarky narration track just giving yourself shit. Please do that more often. Very funny stuff. And I'm not sure, but I think you get madder and madder at yourself as the video continues. :) Oh, and always love the sponsored by commercials . Keep up the good work. Brad

Wow I loved this Iam 45 and when I was 21 I worked at the Montgomery wards the big doors at end was a service Center. I work as a am maintenance man as well as in the garage doing service on cars . Hell the famous bob I haven’t seen him in forever. He and his mother made the best kettle corn in the world!!!!!! I remember shopping in Ames. Bob was their forever and his home made kettle corn and fudge was the best. I have so many memories of this place man. Thanks awesome content kids now just don’t know.
yes it is, and amazing that the house the original store started in is still standing after the inferno of the big store going down next to it, the Sisters of Charity of Rendu Services still use it as their offices and food pantry in Dunbar. Was heartbreaking watching Sullivan's apartment over the store being the last part to fall to the fire too.
Absolutely love this video. This mall is in my town, and I worked at the Pechin store at the mall. I was there for the grand reopening of the Laurel Mall in 2013. Super cool video. Glad I found it! The movie theater only showed movies that Uniontown Mall didn’t show. Great memories!
@@sal Can't wait! You get props all the time, but man . . . the body of work you've done is just astounding. When you wanna take a break from conducting orchestras n' stuff, there'll always be an easy gig for you as a narrator :) . Or a producer!
I used to work at the movie theater around '08. I'm pretty sure the orange guards on the doors were there then too. I have vague memories of putting them on the doors before closing. I can remember cleaning those carpets too. Seeing everything in disrepair now is heartbreaking. There are so many memories of late night sign changes or finding old posters in the back room. I once deep cleaned the bathrooms and found a ticket stub for the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail" behind a trash box. I experienced the end credits of Ironman and the start of the MCU at a midnight screening with a packed theater in that place. I can clearly remember hearing the audience reaction through the doors. It was the same year that we did a special screening for The Dark Knight. The music system in the theaters and projectors had just been replaced with new digital ones. Movie soundtracks were constantly looping in the theaters 24/7. I can still hear the Indiana Jones theme play as I'm trying to clean. Even back then though we all knew the place was on its last legs. There were promises of a new theater being built but none of that ever happened. I've also heard rumors of asbestos in the walls but I never saw any confirmation of it. Well, thanks for letting me relive those weird times again.
Bro I’m from this area , greatest flea market ever . I’ve bought so many retro games and cds from this mall it’s not even funny. I used to know the old dude who ran the gaming store. Also it’s right next to one of the greatest jobs I’ve had (Universal Pressure Pumping) I used to go to Big Mike’s BBQ as well right around the corner from the mall. Also they used to have pechins a super market that sold so much good home made food out the deli. The Rural King was a Ames where my mom bought my 1st N64. This places holds plenty of memories between work, hanging out at the mall also had a movie theater too that had all the best movies .
“Trust me it says Wards. It’s a Wards” Hilarious conversation with yourself, Sal! I also love your positive attitude about the mall thriving. Those of us who are less optimistic see a mostly empty mall with no customers for visiting the stands.
I had alot of memories of this mall. My mom work at ames for awhile when it was open. Would go back an fourth threw the mall an movie theater and ames. Them places and everyone.
20:36 that used to be Pechin's Firehouse Restaurant. It was pretty nice and had good food. It closed August 11, 2019. They have Zia Maria's Bakery & Cafe and the Pechin Market in Connellsville now.
20:45 That use to be called "Pechin Firehouse". It was a restaurant, but didn't last long; closed up a few years after it opened (I'd say about 2015?).

Oh my...I love that Matrix wing. It's like going into another dimension. You almost expect to walk into the mall back in the 60s when you pass through the doors at the end.
Yes. More drone footage. Super cool. It's sad the movie theatre is just sitting. Seems like an opportunity to have a "budget" theater that shows older flicks for a few bucks. Some vintage films to go with that vintage aesthetic.

This brings back memories, I worked at the theater until it closed. And had been going there for decades. The Firehouse restaurant was in between the grocery store and the beer distributor that took over Wards auto dept. and probably better you walked in the back, your car would have been swallowed by the multiple potholes.the locks on the doors were out there after the theater was broken into and the arcade machines money was stolen.
Dang, Sal...yet ANOTHER Schuylkill clone! And QUIT pickin' on yourself! I LIKED all those fresh thoughts as you, um, got LOST outside the mall, or what used to be the mall, anyhow. I used to go to the Laurel mall all the time as a kid. I can’t tell you how many movies I’ve seen at that theater too. The most memorable one was V for Vendetta opening night. Me and my boyfriend at the time were the only two there that night.
This is brilliant thanks Sal for your time and efforts on a truly interesting and informative video. I have been binging dead mall content recently and I love the detailed research you do, the commentary is funny and insightful and I love your editing and production level. I wonder will content like this be shown in museums in the future you guys are like modern historians documenting the demise of this format of commerce. Btw Kristen Rose of UniComm Productions sent me to this channel. Cheers.
My first check paying job was working for Evergreen Plaza in the Chicago area . It was one of the first enclosed malls in the country . Wards had a huge store there . Chicago was the hometown city for Sears and Wards . The last Sears store in Illinois just closed about 6 months ago . Anyhow Sal you have a great channel . Be good stay safe .
I sent a suggestion to the PA Fireman's Assoc., to use a "dead mall" as a combination Nursing Home/Museum for Fire/Police/EMS people, like the "Fireman's Home" in Hudson NY.
I grew up at that mall, and worked at the Radio Shack there in the late 90s. It was a dead mall by that point, but those of us who worked there enjoyed it. Robert the popcorn guy was a constant fixture handing out free samples all day. Brothers pizza was amazing, Rainbow ice cream from Valley Dairy. Does anyone else remember men sitting outside the appliance store across from thrift drug watching sports on the tv's while the women shopped in the mall?
I'd feel that it is eerie that the Super Bowl XLIII Jerseys being for Sale in the Flea Market like it was Last Year (It Was Not) sets the aura of the Mall like the Matrix Wing. What is eerier is that a lot of Malls where burnt on Montgomery Ward including Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids, among others.

Cheers.
I'm chuckling at the commentary.
Thank you for your work!!!
I sent a suggestion to the PA Fireman's Assoc., to use a "dead mall" as a combination Nursing Home/Museum for Fire/Police/EMS people, like the "Fireman's Home" in Hudson NY.
Cool!
21:02 - Sal starts MST3K-ing his own video. Nice.
