I agree, and that's why I consider Lugosi's Dracula the best villain in the history of cinema: he being a truly evil bastard, he nevertheless has an innate class and has great respect for his opponent (ah, Von Sloan is the best hands down together with Peter Cushing). This is my favorite scene along with the moment when Dracula talks wistfully about death as if he regrets it.

For 1931, this was a remarkably well constructed and directed scene.

This scene shows how great actor Bela Lugosi was... his face after he throws cigarette holder to the ground. He played so much only by mimics, all the fear, hate and demonic of Count Dracula.

3:01 I just LOVE how, after the mirror trick, you can see how Count Dracula the man "disappears" and Count Dracula the Vampire slowly, subtly emerges. Bela Lugosi portrayed this absolutely perfectly! The music is just killer too! And how else to top this whole scene off than having Dracula say: "For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you are a wise man, Van Helsing."

The 1931 movie was actually based on a Dracula play from 1924 (which was based on the 1897 novel). Lugosi had played Dracula in the play OVER ONE THOUSAND TIMES by the time he was picked to star in the movie version. So basically he had completely perfected the character. The amazing thing is, they originally wanted to go with one of several other actors not including Legosi, but he happened to be in LA with his touring play company while they were doing casting, and he completely won the producers over!

But I can guarantee had Lon Chaney ever gotten the chance (fun fact: he was originally picked for this film as Dracula but he died of throat cancer so Lugosi was selected in his place) he would outdo Lugosi. Lugosi is a legendary actor, but Lon Chaney was always far superior.

Even though the music doesn't fit the movie or scene, it does fit the character of Dracula. Even though he acts like a suave and proper gentleman, that's all it is. An act. In reality, he isn't suave and most certainly not a gentleman. He's a demonic snake that slithers through the shadows of the night. An undead predator that preys upon you when you least expect it. Long story short, the music fits the dark and devilish nature of the vampiric Count Dracula.

It's funny to me that the tailcoat, paired with an opera cape, has become so associated with the character of Dracula. He was costumed that way simply because that was the formal evening wear for aristocrats and other wealthy or at least well-to-do men of the period. That's why Fred Astaire wore white tie and tails in his movies, that were made around the same time. Here of course, Dracula omits the cape, as one would do indoors.
White tie has become so associated with Lugosi's Dracula that when they made the 1979 movie, with Frank Langella, they deliberately avoided it, which is a pity, as -- again -- it's the correct formal male evening wear from the second half of the 19th century through to the middle of the 20th, and is still correct for a few very formal occasions.
Commenting on the scene specifically though -- I'll never understand why Van Helsing chose to reveal to Dracula right away that he had noticed Dracula casts no reflection in a mirror. Dracula hadn't noticed Van Helsing and Harker making this discovery. Tactically, it would seem smarter to me to keep that knowledge hidden, and prevent Dracula from knowing at this point that they had discovered what he really was.

@Saleem Frazer The music was added and not in the original. Quite frankly, I was worried it would compromise the movie and all of those movie buffs. It was added for affect and no ill intended. Just doing something different because it felt right.

Boring even by '30ies standards. I couldn't sit through this whole thing if my life depended on it. Lugosi is the only redeeming factor of this absolute snoozer of a movie.

I can’t imagine what you like in movies if you think a classic is terrible
